Be it known that 1, JAMES MoCAULnY, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the county at Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Gas Heat and Light Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to burners for consuming gas, artificial or natural, for the production of heat and light, the principal object being to provide a burner of the Bunsen type but modified to present a cylinder of intensely hot, blue flame.
Another object is to provide, in combination with the heater, a burner for producing light which is capable of being used co incidently or not as may be desired.
In actual practice it is frequently tound that many rooms, halls, etc., are provided with only a-single gas jet and no provisions for supplying heat which, during the cold season, is often desired. By removing the ordinary burner and substituting one of the type indicated by the invention, such room may be cheaply, quickly and conveniently heated toa comfortable degree of temperature, and, at the same time illuminated, if lightbe required, without additional burners, fittings or expense of equipment.
These objects are fully attained by the burners hereinafter described and shown in the annexed drawings, forming a necessary part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a partial side elevational and vertical sectional View of a combined gas burner made in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary bottom plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional View of the gas and air inlet control devices.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.

Engaging the extension is an adapter 20 having an axial passage 21 and an exteriorly threaded top 22 to which is fitted the hollow cylindrical stem 23 termed with the base of a mixing chamber 25 having raised arched walls 26 and terminating in an open tube 27.
The stem 23 has opposed openings 28 for the inlet oi air, which, mixed with the gas, supplies the necessar w oxygen, the combined gases passing into the mixing chamber 25 having perforations 25 in its bottom wall 24, these openings being adjustable in area by a disc 30 rotatable by its raised knurled edge 31, with reference to the chamber, the disc containing perforations 32, corresponding to and registrable with the perforations 29. a
The upper end 22 of the adapter is solid and passing through the closed port-ion are a plurality of passages 34, three being shown, which conduct the mingled gas and air upward within an open conical nozzle formed with the downwardly curved circular base 36 or" the burner. For effecting movement. of the nozzle 35, the same is provided with a manipulating pin 33.
This base, which is imperforate, has an open upturned beaded edge 37 receptive oi. a cylinder 40 made of perforated sheet metal or finely meshed gauze netting, through the minute perforations or". which the gas escapes outwardly into the atmosphere and which, when the gas is ignited, presents a cylinder of flame.
It is to be noted that the plurality of passages 34 in place of a single control aperture, prevent the hissing or whistling sound commonly heard.
A beaded ring 4-1 extends inwardly from the top of the perforate cylinder 40, the same acting as a support for an interior, pendant cylindrical deflector 42, arranged concentrically to present an annular gas space e8 between it and the cylinder 40, ter minating in an inverted cone 44 spaced correspondin ly from the cone 21, its apex being in register with the center of the nozzle In order to divert the heat from the burning gases downward, there may be a number of rings or washers 4C5 fitted tightly to the exterior of the perforate cylinder atO, these rings being made of asbestos and inclined downward at their outer edges as shown,
50 held in the upturned end 51 of an arm 52 having an enlarged hub 53 bored to rotatably engage the nipple 10 between a shoulder 54 and collar 55, the nipple having a lateral opening 56 leading from its enlarged bore 57' and registering with a passage 58 extending from the hub through the arm 52 to the tip 50, so that when the arm is swung in one position gas is conveyed to the tip which is ignited as usual, while if a light is not desired, the arm is rotated on the nipple, the interior of the bored. hub cutting off the passage of gas through the opening 56 and is limited by a pin 59 fixed in the nipple and extending outward into a recess appropriately formed in the hub 53.
From the foregoing it will be seen that if a light only be required, the screw 15 is turned to close the passage 14 and the arm 58 turned into the position shown in Figs. 1. and 3, the gas cook opened and the gas passing through the tip 50 ignited.
When the heater is used, the screw 15 is turned to permit the gas to flow into the mixing chamber and thence into the space 4:3. Upon applying a flame to the lower section of the cylinder, it is transmitted up through the openings 46, forming a cylinder of flame, controllable by adjusting the disc and valve screw as desired.
Obviously the arm may be turned to close the gas passage or not asrequired.
It will alsobe evident that if a light jet is not wished for at any time, the nipple 10 may be wholly omitted and the gas pipe 11 screwed directly into the adapter 20, the gas, in this case being controlled by the cock as usual.
Having thus described my invention, explaining the manner of its construction and use, what I claim as new and desire to s cure by Letters Patent is l. A heater comprising a perforate cylinder, a deflector spaced concentrically interjacent, a mixing chamber on which said cylinder is supported, said chamber having adjustable air inlets, a hollow support for said chamber leading from a gas supply pipe and having a lateral opening through its wall, a hollow arm rotatably mounted on said support, and a gas light tip carried at the end of said arm, the passage in said arm being registrable with the lateral open ing in said support.
2. The combination with a cylindrical burner adapted to produce heat and having a. hollow gas supplying support, of a burner adapted to produce light, a swing arm for said light burner operatively engaged on said support, said arm being hollow and registrable with the lateral opening in the support when in a definite position, and means for limiting the swinging of said arm.
