IMPROVEMENT IN ILLUMINATING VAULT-COVERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,195, dated December 2, 1873; application filed October 22, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, TIIADDEUS HYATT, of NewYoi-k, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pavement- Plates; and do hereby declare that the followin g is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the upper side of a vault-cover having its illuurinating-lenses secured in place by my improved method, and Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same.

Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.

The design of my invention is to enable the lenses of an illuminating vault-cover, pavement-plate, &c., to be secured in place in a more thorough and durable manner than has heretofore been practicable; and it consists in an illuminating vault-cover, pavement-plate, &c., in which the lenses are secured by means of lead or solder poured in a molten state into and caused to fill the spaces between said lenses and the edges of the light-openings, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.

In the annexed drawing, A represents a vault-cover, in which are provided a number of light-openings, a, that have, preferably, an upward and outward flare, as shown in Fig. 2. The edges of the light-openings a being properly tinned, the illuminating-lenses B are placed in position within the same, the lower side of the space between said lenses and the plate is closed by clay or other suitable material, and molten lead, solder, or other like metal, 0, is then poured into and caused to fill said spaces.

I usually permit the lead filling (l to extend just over the upper corner of each lens; but such is not absolutely necessary, as it is found that said filling adheres closely to the sides of the lens, even though said sides have a downward taper, and that it is impracticable to remove one of the same without fracture unless said filling is first softened or removed.

It will be seen that lenses secured in place by the lead filling are so thoroughly supported as to prevent strain or breakage, and that the joint produced is durable and absolutely water-tight.

Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new, 1s-

An illuminating vault cover, pavementplate, &c., in which the lenses are secured by means of molten lead or solder poured into and caused to fill the spaces between said lens and plate, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
