Be it known that I, FRANK E. HATCH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rutherford, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Box-Covering Machines, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to box covering machinery and particularly to machinery for covering the sides of paper boxes with gumrned paper strip of suitable width from rolls of the same.
The main object of the invention is to r provide improved means for wrapping or placing the gummed paper strip on the box body and securing it on all parts to form e. neat and workmanlike appearance. An other object is to provide for turning over and securing one of the side edges of the paper strip to the bottom edges of the box, and still another object is to provide means for turning over and securing the other side edge of the strip to the inside of the top edges of the boX.
A further object is to provide a progressive wrapping of the paper strip on the box body, and a progressive turning over and securing of the edges thereof, and also to provide means for accomplishing these operations simultaneously.
Still another object is to provide convenient and separate means to bring the wrapping means and the edge turning means into and out of operation.
Other features include means for forming neat folds at the corners of the bottom of the box, and special means for securing the strip at the insides of the corners at the top edges of the boX.

ln connection with the form of my invention which is illustrated in Figs. l to 6 inclusive, itis necessary t0 employ means for mounting a roll of paper strip, means for gumming the paper strip on one side, and
means for guiding the paper strip to a predetermined position, all of which meansare well known in thefart. As the operation of ali of these instrunientalities precedes the operation of my improvements, for the sake of clearness the former have not been shown in the drawings.
My improved box covering mechanism is shown attached to a machine bed B, a p0rtion only of which is shown, said portion being that at the delivery end. The form 7 may be made of any desired size to suit the particular size et box being covered, and changes from one size to another can be readily made by removing the screws in the bracket 8 and changing to the form desired, or an adjustable form such as is well known in the art can be used. The box bodies of the properl size sliponto the form 7 and can then be given a single revolution and then remain at rest. The mechanism to control the amount et the rotation is not shown, as several types of. mechanism for this purpose are well known in this art and any suitable type can be employed.

A iexible member 15, attached to the lever 13, and passing over a pulley 16, connects at its other end with a ,weight 17, so as to normally cause the lever 13 and disk 10 to be pulled toward the box, thus keeping enough pressure on the box body to hold it in place on the box form.
1f now the end of the paper strip is attached on one .o'l' the sides of the box and the box fform and box are rotated slowly for one-turn, the paper ystrip will be drawn to the right and onto the sides ot the box, covering the same. lt is necessary, however, to
j provide a 'means of pressing the paper quite strongly against the box sides. and l preterably provide a cylindrical roll, such as 18, that will act in a progressive manner immediately after the strip is attached to the box body. 'lt is necessary that the roll 18 shall tolloiv up the sides as the box is rotated, so that a `goed firm contact will be made by the gru'mmed paper strip at all. points on the boxsides. This means that the roll .must move up and down to keep pressing on the box sides, and to always maintain suiiicient pressure to `make a good Contact or the gummed surface.
',Themeans I prefer to employ for this purpose embody a pair ot levers, such as 19, ufhioh may be of any suitable i'orm and are pivoted as at 20, on suitable supports such as the brackets on the rod 4.-. The goose vneck levers shown are very advantageous and is preferable that they be oonneetedf'byf some'- su'itablefmeans .such as the' bar 22. l prefer to mount the roll 18 on a shaft such as 23, passing` through the free ends of the levers 19, said roll being rotatable on the shaft.
It will be seen that the roll 18 will press the paper strip onto the box body by gravity or by the combined weight of the roll, shaft 23, bar 22 and part of the weight of the levers 19, so that goed contact will always be made between the paper and the sides ot' the box. Une complete turn of the box term etects the wrapping or' the box with paper strip, Vwhich overlaps at the point where it was lirst-placed in contact by hand. ln actual working conditions, a cutting-ell device is necessary, but l plan to use oneo't' several well known forms, and such a device is omitted in the drawingstor the sake ot clearness.
The paper strip overlaps the top and bottom edges of the box,and means are lpro-` vided to turn over the edges oit the strip' and press them into contact with the adjacent edges et the box. Loosely mounted on the shaitQS are two links or arms 2li, at the free ends oi? which is placed a shaft secured in suitable holes in said links. rlhe position and shape ofthe lobe or projection 31 are such that'the edge ofthe paper strip is creased and folded down at the part immediately before the corner, as illustrated in `5; The flange 28,011 `the roll 18, rolls down the edge at the bottom of the box and presses it into contact there` with uniformly except at the part immediately before a corner. At such points a section has already been pressed down so that the flange 28 turns down the following p0rtion of the strip edge in such a position as to lap over the part first pressed down and forms a beveled fold at that point. Suihcient moist gum is on the paper so that some spreads and causes adhesion at the lap.
The-flange 27 on the roll 26 turns over the edge of the paper strip next to the top edges of the box so that it is at right angles to the adjoining side ofthe box. Hung on the shaft 23 is an arm 40 having a pendulo'us Weight 41, and a bent wire'finger 42, which presses against thejbox edge, and acts to turn under the edge of the paper strip from its last-mentioned position at right angles to the box side, toone approximately at 45 degrees thereto or to any other angle suitable for this operation.
Mounted on the shaft23 is an arm 43, placed near the end of the roll 18, andat the free end of said arm is pivoted a lever 44 which carries a cylindrical roll 45, and a triangular` corner presser 46, both mounted on a pin 47. A coil spring 46 causes the lever 44 to press the roll 45 and corner presser 46 against the inside edges at the top of the box and also to press the turned down edge of the paper strip into contact with the same. The roll 45 is for rolling the edge of the paper strip against the inside of thetop edges of the box at all points except the corners, after the strip has been acted on by the finger 42. The corner presser acts on the inside of each corner as it coines in `contact with it by reason of the rotation of the box. A corner comes against one of the points of the presser, presses against it and turns the presser so thatthe succeeding corner comes in contact with the next point of the presser. f lVhen the boxes are placed on the form before the wrapping and `edge turning are V done, it is necessary to provide means to withdraw certain parts sufficiently far away come against one of the levers 19 when the lever 49 is swungupward. A rod 52'connects the lever 49 to a lever '53 on which is a treadle 54, so that pressure of the foot on the treadle will cause the upward moveinent of the levers 19, rolls 1b and 26, disks 30 and 32, and links 24. Pressing downward on the projecting pin 47 releases the f roll 45 and corner presser 46 from the'box edge when a box is iny position andallows one to be placed if none is on the form.
rl'he operation of my improved box covering mechanism illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, is as follows;
The paper strip from the roll of the same has been brought through the gnmming and guiding devices hereinbefore-mentioned and its end hangs free at a convenient distaiice from the form 7 The operator first withdraws the disk 10, presses the treadle 54., which causes the lever 49 to raise the levers 19, rolls 18 and 26 and withdraws theroll 45 and presser 46 by means of the pin 4T. The operator then places an uncovered box ybody b on the form 7, and then brings rthe disk 10 against the box body and it is held in place by means of they lever 13, member 15, pulley 16, and weight. 17. The end of the paper strip is now brought over the uppermost corner of the box and placed with thev gummed side in contact with tne box, underneaththe roll 26. The mechanism for turning the shaft 5 is now caused to operate and the shaft is given one turn and the box form'` and box turn clockwise. vThe paper strip S is drawn to the right and is wrapped around the box sides and pressed down, first by the roll 26andlafterwards by the roll 18, producing a smooth and unwrinlled contact with the box body. The edges of the paper strip project over the edges of thc box at both the top and bottom edges thereof. As the edge of the paper strip adjacent to the bottom of the box comes to the flange 28, it is turnedover at right angles4 and pressed against the bottom edges 'of the box. As the corners of the boxcoine within range of the roll. 26, the dish 530. and the flange 27, the said dislt 30 is caused to rotate as hereinbefore described and attaches a short section of the strip edge next following the corner, to the bottom edge n of the box at that part. As the corner continues on to the flange 28, the latter con` tinues to turn down the strip edge and causes it to lap over at the corner forming a beveled or mitered fold as previously described. The flange 27 is now turning down the other edge of the strip at right angles tothe butA ISC) proper mechanism, and the box and form sides, the linger 42 is followingthe above operation by turning the folded down strip edge -still farther, under the edges of the box at the top, thereof, and the roll 45 presses it into its final position in firm contact with the inside edges of the top of the box. rlhe corner presser 46 acts as hereinbefore described, the strip is cut off by the t come to rest. T he box is removed after moving back the lever 13 and disk 10, and after the levers 19, rolls 18 and 26, have been raised by means of the treadle 54, and after the roll 45 and corner presser 46 have been released by pressing on the pin 47, and is then replaced by an uncovered box body and the operations proceed as before.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8, the extension 2 of the frame B carries a bearing 6 in which is journaled the shaft 5. rl`he box form 7 is mounted on the shaft 5 so as to turn with said shaft, and several sizes of forms may be provided to fit the boxes it is desired to cover. Levers 19, similar to those described in the preferred form of my invention and suitably mounted, carry the cylindrical roll 18 which presses the paper strip S into contact with the box, and a fixed flange 60v onsaid roll starts the tliirning over of the right hand edge of the paper strip so that it is at substantially right angles to the box sides.
A grooved roll 61 is mounted on the lever 62 by means of the screw 63, and the lever 62 is secured fast on the shaft 64 by means of the clamp screw 65. The shaft 64 is ournaled in the hub 66 of the adjustable lever 67 journaled on a bracket 68 secured to the frame extension 2. The lever 67 has a roll 69 which works against a cam 70 secured to the shaft 5, said roll beingcaused to press against said camby means of the coil spring 71 attached at one end to the lower end of the lever and at the other end-to a pin on the frame extension 2, An arm 72 is secured by la set screw 72 to the shaft 64 and has a in 78 in line with an arm 74 journaled on the shaft 64. The arm 74 is connected to a link 75 having a slot 76, a bridge piece 77,
and aroll 7 S on the bridge piece bearing on the cam 79. A coil spring 8O is connected at `one 'end to the link 75 and at the other end to a pin in the vbracket S1 which is secured to the frame extension 2. The cani has' four lugs 82 and the cam 79 has four depressions 83, one lug and one depression being provided for an operation that occurs at each corner of the box. il coil spring 84, having hooks 84 connecting respectively to the lever 62 and the lever 67. causes the lever 62 to normally press the grooved roll 61 against the top edges of the box, and when the gummed paper strip is wrapped around the box with its edges overhanging the adjoining box edges, the roll v6l ycreases and presses down the paper of said strip edge next the bottom of the box onto the bottom edges thereof and causes it to adhere thereto. As a corner of the box reaches the roll 61, the roll 7 8 on the link 75 moves into one of the depressions 83 of the cam 79, causing the link to move the arm 74, which then moves the arm 72 by means of the pin 73 and said arm 72 rocks the shaft 64. Consequently the arm 62 swings upward, carrying the roll 61 out of engagement with the edge of the paper strip. One of the lugs 82 on the cam 70y now moves the lever 67, thus moving the shaft 64 to the right, and the arm 62 and roll 61 arethen allowed to go back into contact with the edge of the paper strip, folding down the saine at the corner in a beveled or mitered fold or lap. rljhis is repeated at each corner of the box.
Mounted on the frame extension 2 on a pivot 85 is a lever 85 pressed upward by the spring 85h,- and at the free end of said lever is an adjustable bent wire member or finger 86 held in a short rocker arm 87 pivoted at 86.v A coil spring 89`nor1nally tends to press the finger 86 against the inside of the top edges of the boX.` The linger 86 has a bent portion 9() which turns under the edge of the paper strip and a portion 91 which presses said edge against the inside of the top edges of the box. VAlso pivoted onl the lever 85 is a rocker arm 92 carrying a" roll 45 and a triangular corner presser 46,'
both journaled ona pin 47. A coil spring 93 causes the `rocker arm to normally rest against a stop pin 94. V` j In order that the machine shall be adjustable to boxes of'diii'erentlsizes, the lever 67 is adjustable in length by means of a slotted portion held on the lower portion by suitable bolts 67. The bridge piece 77 is adjustable on the link 75, and two opposite lugs on the cam 7 O are adjustable to or from the other two by reason of the cam being formed in two parts held together by suitable screws such as 70. Also the depressions n the cam 79 are adjustable in pairs by reason of the cam vbeing constructed in two parts held by screws such as 7 9.
