Description

Apr. 17, 1923.
J. M. HOTHERSALL VACUUM HINGE COVER CONTAINER Filed April 7 1922 Patented Apr. l' 7, 1923.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. HOTHERSALL. OF BROOKLYN. NEW
YORK. ASSIGNOR T AMERICAN COMPANY. OF NEW YORK. N. Y.. A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
VACUUM HINGE-COVER CONTAINER.
Application flied April 7. 1922. Serial No. 550,307.
Be it known that 1. Join" .\l. Hornme SALL. a citizen of the liuited I tatcs. residing in Brookl vn in the county of kings and tate of Yew York. have invented a ncw and useful Improvement in Vacuum lliugc- Cover Containers. of which the following is a specification.
'This invention relates in gmicral to va u- 0'litn containers adapted to have th ends liernietica'll v Fculcd thereto. and has more "particular rcl'crcncc to such containers adapted for the packaging of tobacco or other COIlttllts which are gradually constuned. the container being used as a recep- Qtacleduring the time of consumption.
/ A principal object of the inveutionis the provisionina container of this character of :the combination of means for completely rc- 0 moving an end portion of the body to which an hermetic closure is attached. and a secondarytop within said closure. said secondary top being provided with a. hinged or temporary cover.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a tobacco box which is of substantially normal size and capacitv when hermetically sealed. and which, a ter removal of the hermetically sealed'end, is of the usual general form with a hinge cover,
the top construction being unobstructed by any of the original body parts.
A articular object of the invention is the provision of an hermetic containenof this type which is provided with a tearing strip beneath an hermetically sealed end. and an internal top part provided with a hinge cover forming a temporary closure after t e removal of said tearing strip:
Other ob'ects and advantages of the invention will boa parent as it is better understood from t. e following description,
which, taken in connection, with the accom' an ing drawings, discloses a preferred emodiment' thereof.
Referring. to the, drawin 's. n
Figure 1 is aperspective view of the upper rtion ofa container, in which my invention is embodied. prior to the removal of the hermetically sealed end;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing said end removed and the hinge cover open; and
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view through the container as shown in Fig. 1.
to provide an internal recess or For Hit purpose of illustrating the invention I have shown on the drawings a container liodv H which. of course. may be of an dc-ircd form. but. in the present instanccfis shown as of the flat or pocket .dmpc of the usual tobacco box. It is well 66 known that such contents as tobacco may be better preserved when packaged in a partial vacuum. and for this purpose I provide an h rmetic containcr in which the various seams are of air tight form. the permanent .5 cover 1'. being scamcd to the upper body part- 13 as indicated at 14. Beneath the seam 14 is provided a tearing strip 15 which is set oll'hv s ore lines ltl and IT and m vided with a lip 15 which maybe adapte for engagement by a key. or otherwise. to permit tearing away of thc strip. Beneath the lower scorc linc 1T the body is. headed at 19 groove '21 into which extends a headed portion 22 of" a secondary top 21% positioned within the container. cover 24 is hinged at '25 onto the end part 23 and serves as a temporary closure after removal of'thc upper part, of the container body to which the hermetic cover 1:! is secured. The top part 23-is provided with a straight flange '36 over which a flange '3? on thc covcr engages in the well known manner. and the lower score line 17 is preferably lo ated at so shrlrt a distance above the head 19 as to leave only a slight upstanding wall part :28 after removal of the tearing strip. thus pmviding a substantially smooth secondary top form. The top part 23 preferably extends a distance above the 00 bead 19 and is of rounded or even contour,
as indicated at 29.
'ith the 'foregoing construc tion it. is obvious that the packages may remain hermetically sealed and the contents preserved II in a vacuum until the package is sold to a consumer. The latter may readily remove the hermetic to by tearin away the straifi l5, and therea [Ol lltlS a x of the w known hinge top form. the tobacco or other" c ntents being thus preserved for any des 'ed length of time and delivered in fresh condition.
It is thou ht that the invention and many of its atte'n an't advantages will be under- 106 stood from the foregoing description, and it'will be apparent thatvarious changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages. the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. A container for tobacco and the like, comprising an hermetically sealed box provided with a tearing strip near one end thereof, and an internal secondary top part engaging said box beneath said tearing strip and provided with a hinge cover.
2. container for tobacco and the like, comprising an hermetically scaled box in which the contents are packaged in a vacu un. said box having a tearing strip near an end thereof. and an internal end part secured to the bodv of the box beneath said tearing strip. an a hinge cover on said secondary end part.
3. A container for tobacco and the like, comprising a box in which the contents are packagcd in a vacuum. means for removing an end of said box. and a second end part secured to the box beneath said removable end and a hinge closure on said second end part.
4. A container for tobacco and the like, comprising a box in which the contents are packaged in a vacuum, means for removing an end of said box, and a. second end part secured to the box beneath said removable cud and a temporary?cover on said second end part.
5. container for tobacco and the like, c-unprising :2 box having a cover hermeti- "allv scalc l thc'cto, a bead extending thereabout and pzuc-i from said cover. a tearing strip sci ofl' 'o v cm'c lines between said head and the covcr scam. a secondary top part having a lowcr bcad extending into the intci'ioi' rccrs: i'ornu-d by the said first mentiunt'd la-ad. and a hinge cover on said secondary top part.
(3f container provided with a permanently secured cover and a. body tearing strip litlltlttll said cover, and a temporar cover sc urcd to the container body beneati raid tearing strip.
7. container. comprising, a bod having an end permanently secured hereto, means for severing the body beneath said curl. and a second end secured to the body beneath the line of severance therein and provided with a temporary closure.
8. A container. comprising a body having an and permanently secured thereto, means for severing the body beneath said end, and a second end secured to the body beneath the line of severance therein, and provided with a hinge closure usable after removal of said first mentioned end part.
