Description
W. 0. SMITH.
Attachments for Stove Doors.
Patented Dec. 2,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILL 0. SMITH, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHMENTS FOR STOVE-DOORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145.132, dated December 2, 1873; application filed October 27, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILL 0. SMITH, of Boston, State of Massachusetts, have invented a Stove-Door Attachment, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention will be understood from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the same, in which- Figure l is a side elevation, showing my improved attachment. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view showing a modification of my attachment.
In Fig. 1, B and O are jaws, connected by the part A, forming a clamp. D is a setscrew, passing through the lower jaw O, and E is a knob, having a concaved end, K, and attached to the body A by the shank Z. The outer end of the upper jaw B is constructed with two projections, X X. The parts A, B, O, D, and Z, are made of metal, and the part E of wood. In the alternate method of constructing my attachment, (shown in Fig. 3,) the body A has no shank, the knob E being connected with the set-screw D.
It is well known that the doors of nearly all stoves used for cooking and heating are provided with small projections or lifts, for opening the same. When these lifts become heated, the door cannot be opened without danger of burning the hand, unless a holder made of some non-conductor of heat is used.
I am aware that a stove-door attachment for that purpose has been used, consisting of a wooden knob or lift attached to a wire holder, the wire being passed through a hole drilled in the lift or car of the stove-door, and bent in such a manner as to keep the knob from contact with the door; but one of the objections to such an attachment is the difficulty of connecting it with the door, a hole having to be drilled in the lift of the same for that purpose. Another objection is, that, standing out at nearly a right angle to the door, it is liable to catch the garments of any one passing around the stove, and tear the same.
dentally turned to one side, or moved out of place when. in use, I construct it with the points or projections X X, as shown in Fig. 2. These points are intended to press firmly against the side of the door, thus keeping the attachment in place after once adjusted and fastened by the screw D.
The concave K in the lower end of the knob E is to prevent the finger from slipping from the knob while in the act of opening the stovedoor by means of my attachment, and is a very important guard against burning the hand.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the diiferent figures in the drawings.
I am aware that Letters Patent were granted to O. H. Robert-s, October 15, 1867, numbered 69,841, for a stove-door attachment. His attachment consists of a wooden knob, slotted or forked at one end, so as to be pressed horizontally onto the ear or lift of the door, and fastened by means of a sliding ring. In actual use, the heat of the lift soon chars and burns away the faces of the slot, so that the knob cannot be securely fastened; and the end of the knob, being round, allows the fingers to slip off in lifting, thus rendering them liable to be burned by coming into contact with the door. I therefore claim no part, in itself considered, of the attachment shown in the Letters Patent granted to said Roberts; but
hat I do claim is- The knob E, provided with the concaved end K, combined with the jaws B O, body A, and set-screw D, to form a stove-door attachment, as set forth and described.
WVILL 0. SMITH.
