Ta aZZ wlwm z't may concemi: r -Be it known that We, PAUL Vonmux and RAYMOND BABL, citizens of the Republic of France, residing at Paris, France, have invented certain neV and useful Improvements in Rotary Apparat'us Operating as ump or Motor, of which the following is This invention relates to a rotary apparatus which 'is desi9ned to operate as makes use of fluide of all kinds, either liquids orgases. The apparatus comprises on the one hand a star-shaped cylinder combination rotating about a stationary shaft serving as the valvegear for inlet and delivery of fiuid, and on the other hand a main casing which jdraws along the pistons in its rotational motion 'about an axis having an eccentric disposition withreference to the axis of the star-shaped cylinder combination, in such manner as to cause variations in the volume comprised between the head of each piston and the stationary shaft having the cylinders rotiting thereon, and thus to (affect the circulation of the fluid in case the apparatus works as. a*pump, or invrsely, to affect the rotation of the apparatus if the compressed fluid is delivered into the cyliners.
One of the -particular features of theV.in-. mention resides in the method of assembling the difierent. members of the apparatus, method of connecting the pistons with the outer casing by means of rods secured to the latter, the said pistons being adapted to slide along these rods. Another special feature lies in the valve gear combination afiorded by the rotation of the star-shaped cylinder makeup; this latter hein employed for covering and uncoverihg tl%e ports of the fluidintake and delivery passages the said passa es being b tion of the pistons along the rods d 03 oi provided in the stationary shaft having rotating thereon the star-shaped cylinder combination.
This invention also comprises various imprdvements designed to obviate the leakage Which is fiable t0 occur either between the cylinders, along the shaft, or casing.
The following description and accompanv Way of example, ex-
- plin how the invention can be carned out.
Fig. 1 is a cross-section of the apparatus perpendicular to its axis of rotation, this in the main section. hein of Fig. 2 wit certain parts such as the pistons sh0vvn inexterior view.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the I'O" tary apparatus partly in exterior view.
Figs. 3, 4: and 5 relate to an alternative form of the valve gear.. Figs. 3 and 41 correspond to sections along YY and Z-Z of Fig. 2 in Which the valve gar is modified talien along the line XX according to the said alternative form; Fig.
5 is a section through the end ofthe dliveryL passage.
Figs. 6 and 7 show respectively in vertical and in longitudinal section along the line of- Fig. 6, an apparatus containing the nnprovements designed. to secure a better tightness.
The apparatus according to this invention comprises a star-shaped cylinder combination a shaft 6. The cylinders a (t a contain the pistons c c c traversed by'the 'rods d d d rigidly sebured to the outer casing 8 which rotates upon the journals i' mounted in fixed position '*but eccentric with reference to the shaft b.
It will be observed according to the foregoing that the cylinder combination a,- a*. a rotates about the axis UU of the sta tionary shaft, while the pistons c 0 c rotate about the stationary shaft V V, of the journals f. ;Under these conditions, when the casing r0tates, carrying with it in its movement the cylinders a (1?, (L and the pistons c (2 0 these latter will also have a displacement relative to the cylinders a a a i. e., they will move within the cylinders with an amplitude of longitudinal displacement equal to one-half the value of the eccentricity between' the axes UU and VV. This longitudinalmovement of the pistons .in take place by reason of thesliding disposi- Moreover, the journals 7 and the shaft b a a rotating about a stationary the cylinders can contain the passages 7H3 for the intake and delivery of the fluid, admitting that the apparatus operates as a pump, i e., that the casing 6 is given a rotary movement, for instancein the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1.
t will be observed that when the casing has made onathird of a revolution, the cylinder a which is drawn in the rotary movennt of the casing 9 ,by the piston 0" (which latter is drawnby the"rod d rigidly secured.to the casing) has'now taken the tons, and these shafts D D D D are held at their ends in the bosses P P P P cast together with the main casing m, a,soft metal ring, for instance in bronze Q Q? Q;' Q being tien.
It is of course understood that the sliding disposition of the pistons which is obtained simply by the use of a shaft having the piston sli ding thereon; could be obtained in any other suitable manner, and chiefly by providing each piston with rollers, with a small carriage or with any other suitable sliding means.
This invention is not of course limited to the hereinbefor e described arrangements, but is susceptible of various modifications and changes Which would be' within the spirit of the invention, and as a particular case it may be observed that the cylinders mg be provided in any number.
aving thus described the nature of our said invention and the best means we know prferably disposed between each piston and its shaft. This disposition af-. fords an absolutely tight construction for the casing, this casingbeing no longer pro-' vided with holes as in the preding descrip-' of carrying the same into practical effect, we daim:
A rotary apparatus operating either as compressor or motor, comprismg a fanshaped cylinder combination a stationary hollow shaft having the said cylinder combination rotatable thereon, intake and delivery passages provided in the stationary sha'ft, a main casing rotatable about an axis having an eocentric disposition with reference to the axis of'rotation of the sa-id cylinder ombination, rods rigidly secured to the saiid'casing and having the said pistons slidabl thereon, of the delivery passage of the said stationary hollow shaft, a;n auxiliary intake passage disposed within the hollow shaft and provided with valves, and an auxiliary delivery passage disposed within the hollow shafl; and provided with valves.
a valvedisposed at the end In witness whereof, we have hereunto signed our names in the presence of the subscribing witness.
