Be it known that I, RAYMOND S. DreamsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and Stilte of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rota ry Internal-(lombustion Engines, of which the following'is a specificati-on.
lliis invention relates to that class of rotary internal-conxbusl'ion engines having a plurality of cylinders in which operate reciprocating pistons which are connected to a .stationary crank shaft around which shaft the cylinders revolve.
It is the object of the present invention to provide in nn engine of the kind stated a novel connection between the pistons and the crank shaft, together with an arrangement of ports and pas passages whereby a twocycle en 'ne is lad.
In order t at the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accornpanying drawing formin a part of this specification, in which rawing two sectional views of the engine are shown, Figure 1 being a longitudinal section on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2, and Fi 2 a transverse section o n the line 2 2 c Fig. 1.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes the stationary crank shaft, the same hcing supported in any suitable manner, which is immaterial to the resent invention. The shaft is rovided witi two coinciding cranks G to w lich the reciprocating pistons T working in the cylinders 8 are connected in a manner to be presently described. The cylinders are arranged radially and located diametrically op )osite each other between the cranks, and tiey are connected at their inner ends to a hub 9 rotatably lnounted on the shaft. The inner ends of the cylinders are in open communication with )erts 10 in the hub, which ports successivey register with a. port 11 in the shaft, the last-mentioned port leadin from an axial fuel passage 12 in the shnfl, said passage being connected to any suitable lsource of fuel supply (not shown).
Two piston rods 13 are provided for each piston 7, said rods being located on the outside of the cylinders 8, on opposite sides thereof, and connected to the cranks The connection between the piston and the rods is made by a wrist pin 14 passing transversel y through the body of the piston intermediate its ends, and through longitudinal slots 15 in the cyinder wall.
The engine is a two-cycle engine, the pistons acting as working pistons as well as pump pistons to supply a fresh charge. The outer ends of the cylinders and the corresponding ends of the pistons constitute the working cylinders and the inner ends of the cylinders and the eorrespomling ends of the pistons form pumps. In the last-mentioned end of each cylinder is a port 16 which is connected by a by-pass 17 to the inlet port 18 of the working end of the cylinder, and opposite the lastmentioned port is an exhaust port 19. The working end of the pis ton has a defiector 20, as usual, and a suitable igniter (not shown) is also novided, the operation thereof being time by any suitable mechanism which has not been described andshown as it is well known to those skilled in the art. r
The shaft 5 is in two sect-ions which are connected b a screw or other joint 21 intermediate t e cranks 6. Two cylinders are shown, but it will be understood that their number may be increased to suit the work for which the engine is designed.
In operation, the cylinders revolve around the crank shaft, and the ports 10 alternately come opposite the orts 11. This takes place on the outwar stroke of the piston, whereupon a charge is drawn into the inner or pump end of tie c linder. On the next or Inward stroke of tie piston, the port 'l0 having in the meantime been closed by passing the port. 1l, the charge in the innrr end of the cylinder is partly compressed, nml when the working end of the piston uncovers the port 18.. said ('.harge is admitted into the wor ring end of the cylinder behind the piston, and compressed on the next outward stroke. The charge is then ignited, and the piston makes n working stroke, at the end of which the ort 10 is uncovered by the working end o the piston, and the spent gases are exhausted. In the meantime a fresh charge had been drawn into the pump end of the cylinder on the compression stroke., which charge is delivered into the working end of the cylinder at the end of the firing stroke as beA ore. The two cylinders are urranged so that the tiring stroke occurs in alternate order.
I claim:
1. A rotary internal-eonxbustion engine -ders mounted on tie hub over the ports thereof, reciprocatin pistons working in the cylinders, one en of said cylinders liein r working cylinders and having inlet and ex iaust orts, and the other ends being pump cy inders, the ports of the hub openin into the last-mentioned ends of the cyl- 4im ers, by-passes connecting the pump ends of the cylinders and the inlet ports of the working ends of the cylinders, wrist pins connected to the pistons and passing through the slots of the cylinders, and rods connected to said wrist pins and to the cranks of the shaft.
