The other end of the right-hand rag is then placed on top of the end of the left-hand rag, so that the two rags are lapped onto each other. This lapped portion is then placed on the point of the knife, and forced down, thus cutting va loophole through each len gthwise of the rags. The cuts thus made are then passed over the needle, and forced down on the stand B over the end of the rag on the needle. This end is then drawn through the cuts as the rags are removed, and the ends are 'looped together, which completes the operation.

IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-RAG LOOPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,094, dated- December 2, 1873; application filed September 13, 1873.
` pet-Rags, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to facilitate the manufacture of rag carpets; and it consists in a device for looping together the ra-gs, so as to make a continuous line or thread of the rags to be used as filling in the process of weaving the carpet.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a top view. Fig. 2 is a Vertical section taken on the line x az.

A is the bed-plate, made of Wood or other suitable material. B is a stand with a conical top, in the center of which is a Vertical needle, C. D is a vertical sharp-pointed knife, fixed rigidly in the bed. E is a double or twopronged guard, to protect the fingers of the operator from the knife when in the act of cutting the loop-holes. 1
The mode of operatin g with this looping apparatus is as follows: The operator, holding a pieoe of rag in each hand, loops the 'ends together by placing the left-hand end of the right-hand rag on the needle. The other end of the right-hand rag is then placed on top of the end of the left-hand rag, so that the two rags are lapped onto each other. This looping` together of the ends of the pieces of rags is, with this apparatus, performed in a most rapid manner, and much valuable time is saved.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to Secure by Letters Patent- The combination of holding and looping needle device B C, double guard E, and in-` termediate knife D, arranged upon the same bed-piece A, as and for the purpose described.
