TRIMMTNG ATTACHMENT FOR LOOPED FABRIC SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,244, dated April 22, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE COOPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bennington, in the county of Bennington, and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Trimming Attachments for Circular Seaming or Looping Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvementin trimming attachments for circular seaming or looping machines, and it has for its object to provide a trimmer that is durable and simple in construction, and that has the necessary adjustments for bringing into contact unused parts of the cutters, so as to enable them to be used a much longer time than heretofore without sharpening or being replaced by new ones; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a plan view of a circular seaming or looping machine with my improved attachment thereon. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same, partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the attachment. Fig. 1 is an elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is a central longitudinal section through the line 00 0c of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical section through the line Y Y of Fig. l. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the bed-plate with the gear-wheels removed. Fig. 8 is a modified form of the construction shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 9 is a detail view of a guide, and Fi 10 is a detail. view of one of the gear-wheels.
In the drawings, A represents the supporting -bracket, B the point bed disk, C the driving-shaft, and b the operating or needle shaft having pins 0 connected therewith, all of well=known construction.
My trimming attachment is secured to the disk B at one side of the bracket A g and it consists of a bed plate D, having an elongated slot d near its inner end, through which a suitable belt a is passed to attach it to the disk B, the shape of the slot being such as to permit the attachment to be adjusted relative to the points on the disk.
As shown in Fig. 7, the bed piece or plate is formed with a curved channel or guidewayE in its upper face, said channel being curved outwardly from the machine. The bed-piece also has an oblong vertical opening ethrough its outer end portion leading into a circular recess e in the under side of the bed-plate.
At one end of the channel E in the bed-plate there is formed a V shaped groove 6 over which the cutter-disks are placed.
F represents a rotary beveled edge-cutting disk, which is placed on the under side of the bed-plate and is held in place by a screw f on its under side, extending into a shaft f above through an opening d in the bed-piecc. The shaft extends up through the plate, and has on. its upper end a gear-wheel G, which is keyed thereon by a pin g, resting in a radial groove in the wheel. The shaft f has awasher and nut g on its upper end, which holds the gear-wheel G in place.
II represents a vertical shaft, which extends through the slot e and a circular recess 6 in the under side of the bed-plate. This shaft has a flange or collar h formed thereon a little below its center, which is placed in the recess 6.
A CUhtGP-(llSk I is secured to the shaft immediately below the bed-plate by a pin 2', passing through the shaft and resting in suitable notches i in the cutter. A collar or sleeve J is placed on the lower end of the shaft and forms a bearing for the cutter. This sleeve is held in place by a nut 7' on the end of the shaft II, projecting through it, so that the cutter may be quickly taken oif to permit of the vertical and longitudinal adjustment of the shaft.
A sleeve K is placed in the slot eand recess e of the bed-plate, which is formed with a flange 7c on its lower end, which is of larger diameter than the width of the slot 0. The upper end of this sleeve is screw-threaded, and is provided with a holding-nut 7t, whcre= by it may be adjusted up and down in the slot and recess. The shaft is passed through the sleeve K and is held in place by a pin h, located in an aperture in the shaft just above the top of the sleeve and its holding-nut. By this construction the sleeve K, holding the shaft in position, may be moved longitudinally the length of the slot 6 and adjusted vertically, carrying the shaft H with it.
To adjust the edges of the cutters relative to each other, a set-screwL is employed, which passes through the outer end of the bed-piece D and impinges against the sleeve K, which is moved by the screw.
A gear-wheel M is keyed on the upper end portion of shaft H by having radial grooves m in its under side, in which there is inserted a pin h. This wheel is of the same dimensions as gear-wheel G and meshes therewith, and as shown in Fig. 10, has a series of screwholes N made in its face near its periphery.
0 represents a lever-arm having an enlarged inner end 0, forming a lateral projection to receive the end of the shaft H, and on which rests the washer and cap-nut n of the shaft, thereby retaining it in place and providing a direct leverage upon the shaft. In the end of the lever O at the angle of the projecting portion 0 is an aperture or hole in which is inserted a screw or bolt P, the threaded end of which enters the screw-holes N in the gear-wheel M and holds the two parts adjustably together. The outer end of the lever-arm is at right angles to and on the same plane with the inner projecting portion, and is free and disconnected from any other part. Its extreme end is bent upward to form a lug, which rests between two pins 0 on the needle-shaft b. As the shaft is oscillated the pins strike the lug, throwing the leverarm from side to side, which carries with it the gear-wheel M and shaft H, that are rigidly secured to the lever, and through them the cutters are given a limited rotary movement one upon the other. By this construction it will be seen that the edge of the cutters may be changed or rotated when they become worn or dull by placing the screw in one of the other holes1 thereby bringing a new or sharp portion of the cutters into use without removing the cutters from the bedpiece. On the front of the bed=piece D on either side of the groove e there are secured guides for conducting the edge of the material to the cutters. The guide Q has acurved finger extending out beyond the bed-piece. The guide R is provided with an elongated opening 0", and is adjustably screwed to the bed-piece by means of a screw through the opening, and has a curved finger extending forward at about the same distance as that of the guide Q, with a rearwardly-extending spring-arm 'r projecting from its lower forward end back beyond the abutting edges of the cutting-disks. This arm being in the form of a spring and resilient in its action and upon an adjustable guide, can be made to exercise such a degree of pressure upon the goods against the cutters and points, as is desired.
To prevent the cuttings or ends of the goods from being drawn in between the gearwheels, a curved guard S is placed in front of the wheels, which consists of a metal bracket secured to the bed-piece D, having thereon lateral curved guard-arms s, which are of a width equal to the thickness of the wheels.
While I prefer to use a beveled anda blunt edge cutting-disk, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, I may use two beveled cutters, as shown in Fig. 8, which is a slightly-modified form of my device. In this instance a supplemental or beveled cutter is loosely placed on the shaft H beneath the regular or blunt edged cutter, with its edge closely fitting up against the under side and edge of the adjacent cutter F, where itis held by a coiled spring T 011 the shaft pressing against its under side. The tension of the spring is regulated by the nut j on the lower end of the shaft, which is operated against awasher upon which the spring rests. If desired, in using the beveled cutters the blunt cutter may be removed and the shaft H adjusted downward a suitable distance to enable the beveled cutter to rest directly against its collar or flange h when the edge of the cutter is beneath the edge of the cutter F.
The operation of the attachment is as follows: The outer end of the lever-arm O is engaged by pins 0 on the operating or needle shaft Z) of the machine, and is vibrated or re ciprocated back and forth, moving the gearwheels Gand M simultaneously and causing the cutters to rotate back and forth for a short distance, using only a small portion of their cutting-edges, severing the edge of the material presented to'them. the cutters become worn or dull it is only necessary to change the screw P to one of the other holes in the gear-wheelM and the edges of the cutters are turned, bringing in contact their unused or sharp edges. As often as the edges become dulled the same operation'of As the edges of IIO changing the screw Pone hole is repeated un= the construction and arrangement of the parts of my device may be made and substituted for those shown and described without in the least departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination,with a trimming attachment and the driving-shaft thereof, of rotary cutters with shafts connecting gear-Wheels thereto, of a right-angled lever-arm lying upon one of the gear-wheels, the shaft of the wheel passing through one of its arms, and a screw through the angular portion of the arm taking into one of a series of adj ustingholes near the periphery of the wheel, the outer end of the lever being in the same plane with the inner end and oscillated back and forth between pins on the said driving-shaft, as set forth.
2. In a trimming attachment, the combina' tion, with a bed-piece having a channel therein, with cutting-disks located on each side of the channel, vertical shafts on which the disks are mounted, and gear-wheels on the shafts meshing With each other, of a bracket secured to the bed-piece and extending upward, having thereon lateral curved guard-arms in front of the gear-wheels, as set forth.
3. The combination, with the bed-piece having a vertical shaft, a cutting-disk and gearwheel on its ends, a longitudinally and laterally adjustable shaft adjacent to said other shaft, provided with a cutter and gearqvlieel, and a lever for adjusting and operating the cutters, of a supplemental cutter on the ad justablc shaft beneath the regular cutter, said supplemental cutter being held against the adjacent cutter by the tension of a spring regulated by a nut on the end of the shaft, as set forth.

In a trimming attachment, the combination, with a bed-piece, of a shaft having a cutting-disk and gear-wheel thereon, another shaft adjacent to said shaft, having a sleeve thereon located in an oblong opening in the bed-piece and supporting said shaft, a setscrew for moving said sleeve, and a cuttingdisk and gear-wheel on the shaft, as set forth.
5. The combination, with the bed-piece having an oblong groove near its end and a recess below the groove, of a flanged sleeve in the groove and recess, a holding-nut on the sleeve, a shaft passing through said sleeve, a shaft adjacent to said other shaft, cuttingdisks on both of said shafts, and means for operating said disks, as set forth.
6. The combination, with the channeled bed-piece and revolving cutters, of a guide adjustably secured to the bed'piece and having a rearwardly-extending spring-arm below and back of the cutters, as set forth.
