IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE HATS.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, Arepresents the hat, of any one of the approved patterns, to which is applied at the inside, near its connection with the brim, the band B, of suitable material. Band B is, preferably, arranged in four parts of concave shape to correspond to the shape of the head, with interstices of Vsuitable size Itis slotted, to be produced as light as possible, and covered, for the purpose of ventilation, with the perforated leather or other covering B. Eachpart of band B is provided with one or more bandsprings, (l, of brass or other material, bent in U shape, which springs are attached with their other legs in suitable manner to the body of hat A; and, by an outer extension, O', of their legs, to the brim. A slotted metallic tube, D, is soldered or otherwise connected to this extension O', and guides a notched bolt or rack, D', which slides forward and backward in tube D by pressing on its button or knob a, and is re-v tained in position by spring-pawl E. The end of bolt D acts on that leg of band-spring applied to band B, and forces the latter forward or backward, as required, according as bolt Dy is pushed forward or spring-pawl E released from the notches.
For the purpose of simplifying and lightening this construction, I obtain the same effect on band B by introducing a wedgeshaped piece, F, of cork or other material, between the legs ofthe band-sprin g O', which wedge is pushed up or down as it is desired to make the hat larger or smaller.
This adjustable attachment for enlarging and contracting the hats is designed more especially as an improvement to the extension-
