Application filed August 29, 1921. Serial No. 436,204.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that GUSTAF L. KoLLBnnG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, has invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pumps.
Synchronous alternating current motors have been applied for the purpose of driving pumps but one of the difiiculties en countered is that it is not possible to vary the discharge capacity of the pump for the reason that the speed of the synchronous motor cannot be varied as it depends on the frequency ofthe alternating current. It is accordingly a general object of this invention, to provide simple and efficient means whereby the delivered capacity, of a pump may be varied. It is, further, an object of this invention to provide a synchronous-motordriven pump unit, or a pump unit driven by a motor the speed of which cannot be varied, but in which the delivered capacity maybe varied. Other objects will appear hereinafter as a description of the invention proceeds.
The novel features of the invention will appear from this specification and the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof and showing one embodiment of said invention and all these novel features are intended to be pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a plan view of a pump unit embodying the features of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the pump unit shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View of one of the cylinders of the pump unit shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The pump unit is shown in the drawings as comprising a synchronous motor 1 drivingly connected in any suitable manner to a pair of double acting plungers 2, 3. The number of these plungers is not material. Plunger 2 has associated therewith a pair of cylinders l, 5 and plunger 3 has similarly associated therewith a pair of cylinders 6, 7. The pairs of cylinders i, 5 and 6, 7 are here shown as respectively mounted on hollow bases 8, 9 connected by means of a common suction pipe 10 in turn connected to the -main suction pipe 11. A pipe 12 is here shown as providing a common discharge for cylinders l, 5 by connecting the discharge end of these cylinders. The discharge ends of cylinders 6, 7 are similarly connected by means of pipe 13. A pipe connection 1% is here shown as connected at the respective ends thereof to the discharge ends or cylinders a, 6 whereby the discharge from all cylinders i, 5, 6, 7 may reach a main discharge pipe 15. The discharge pipe 15 may be provided with a check valve 16. The pipe connection id may have connected therewith a pipe 1'? leading to the suction or sump or the pump unit and a valve 18 may be provided in the pipe i7.
iiiei erring now to 3 in which cylinder 4 shown in vertical section, this cylinder is here shown as provided with a suction valve and a discharge valve 20 of any suitable type. A by-pass 21 is provided whereby the cylinder may be connected to its discharge. The by-pass is here shown as connected to the cylinder through the passage 22 and to the discharge through the passage 23. The by-pass is provided with a valve 2% by means oi which it may be closed at will. By reference to Figs. 1 and 2 it will be seen that each of the remaining cylinders 5, 6, 7 may be similarly provided with by-pass connections 25, E26, 27 respectively having valves 28, 29, 80.
The operation of the pump unit is as follows:
In starting 'the unit it is preferable to open the valve 18 so as to unload the cylinders and permit discharge into the suction. All of the bypass valves may also be open during the starting period. When the valve 18 and all of the bypass valves have been closed the pump unit will deliver its full capacity with the synchronous motor 1 running under normal conditions. it it is now desired to decrease the discharge capacity, one of the bypass valves 24, for example, may be opened. Under these conditions, as-
suming plunger 2 to be entering cylinder 5,
the suction valve of cylinder 5 will be closed and the discharge valve open. The water or other fluid discharged from cylinder 5 will pass to the discharge and through pipe 12 and anequal quantity of water will enter cylinder 4 through by-pass :21, the suction and discharge valves of cylinder d being closed. It will be noted that on this stroke no water is pumped into the main discharge pipe 15. On the other stroke, When the plunger 2 enters cylinder 4, water will be discharged through by-pass 21 into the discharge and this water will pass into main discharge pipe inasmuch as no water can enter cylinder 5 from the discharge becausethe discharge valves of said cylinder will be closed. During this stroke, however, water is drawn into cylinder 5 through the suction valve thereof by the action of the plunger. It will thus be noted that the bypass associated with a given cylinder must be large enough to pass the capacity of the cylinder associated with said given cylinder.
ll? it is desired to still further reduce the discharge capacity of the pump unit any desired additional number of the by-pass valves 28, 29, may be opened.
It should be understood that it is not desired to limit the invention claimed to the exact details oi? construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will ocour to one skilled in the art.
It is claimed and desired to secure by Letters Patent:
