Description
Apr. 3, 1923. 1A575 A.P.TESELSKY PLIERS Filed June 14, 1921 Patented Apr. 3, l923.
Wears ALEX P. TESELSKY, OF RUSO, NORTH DAKOTA.
a PLIERS.
Application filed. June 14,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEX P. TEsnLsKY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ruse. in the county of McLean and State of North Dakota. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pliers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to tools of the pliers type and aims to provide an implement of this character embodying a third jaw disposed to coact with the usual jaws of the pliers to prevent the article gripped from slipping. p
- The invention furthermore provides a tool of the pliers type with shear blades for cutting sheet metal, one of the blades being advjustable whereby to bring a sharp portion in operative position when the active portion has'become dull.
Uther objects and advantageswill be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawing illustrates an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood 7 that in adapting the same to meet different Figure 4 is a section on the line t-4 of Figure 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawing by like reference characters.
The tool comprises two levers or members which cross near one end and are pivotally connected at the point of crossing. ()ne of the lever members is designated by the numeral 1 and has a jaw 2. The companion lever member is designated by the numeral 3 and embodies a jaw 4;. To increase the range of usefulness of the tool one of the 1921. Serial No. $77,416.
members terminates in a claw 5 and the other in a screw driver point 6. A third jaw 7 is adjustably connected to the tool by means of a shank 8 which preferably curves in its length whereby the jaw 7 is adjustits length as indicated at 11 to receive the pivot fastening 9 whereby to hold the shank 8 and jaw 7 in the required adjusted position. That portion of the pivot fastening 9 passing through the slot 10 is flattened upon opposite sides to provide for adjustment of the aw 7 when the parts are moved to a position to bring the flattened portions of the pivot 9 in line with the slot 10. This position is assumed when the members 1 and 3 are open to the limit of their movement. After the jaw 7 has been adjusted to the required position it is made secure by partly closing the members which causes the flattened portion of the pivot 9 to enter the selected enlargement 11 of the slot 10 whereby movement of the shank 8 and jaw 7 is prevented. The forward portion of the member 3 is cut away upon its outer side to receive the shank 8. A rib or flange 12 is formed along the outer edge of the cut away portion of the member which engages the outer edge of the shank 8, which is thereby held in position in connection with the pivot fastening 9. The inner edge of the shank 8 is beveled to form a cutting edge 13 which coacts with a corresponding cutting edge along the inner side of the jaw A portion of the jaw 52 is cut away as indicated at 14 and the same is beveled to provide the cutting edge to coact with the cutting edge 13 whereby the tool is adapted to be used as metal shears in cutting for sheet metal.
The work ends of the jaws 2 and a. respectively, have projections indicated at 15 and 17 while a corresponding projection at 16 is provided on the jaw 7 in order to provide efiective gripping surfaces. The projections 14-, 15 and 16 are substantially in the same plane whereby provision is had for receiving the flange or knurled edge of oil cups to provide clearance therefor thereby enabling the body portion to be firmly and securely gripped by the jaws. The jaws at and 7 are toothed to prevent slipping. The

7. A tool of the pliers type comprising in addition to the usual two jaws a third jaw disposed forwardly of the usual jaws and adapted to cooperate therewith to retain an article and prevent slipping.
8. A tool of the pliers type embodying in addition to the usual two jaws a third jaw having adjustable connection with the tool and disposed forwardly and opposite the two ordinary jaws for cooperation therewith in the capacity of the holder or retainer.
9. A tool of the pliers type comprising two members pivotally connected and a third jaw having a shank retained in position by the pivot fastening connecting the two members of the tool.
10. A tool of the pliers type comprising two members pivotally connected, a third jaw having a shank longitudinally slotted to receive the pivot fastening of the tool and adjustable thereon and retained in the adjusted position thereby.
11. A tool of the pliers'type comprising two members pivotally connected, a third jaw having a shank seated upon one of the members and retained in position by the pivot fastening.
12. A tool of the pliers type comprising pivoted lever members, a pivot fastening therefor having opposite sides flattened, a third jaw having a shank longitudinally slotted and having the slot enlarged at intervals, the flattened portions of the pivot fastening entering the slot of the shank and cooperating with the enlargements thereof to retain the third jaw in the required adjusted position.
