CHARLES N. VAN CLEAVE, F INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
COIN-CONTROLLED LOCK.
Application led March 1, 1920. Serial No. 362,308.
To @ZZ toLof/n t lmay concern.'
Be it known that l, CHARLES El. VAN Cinnvn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolist in the county ot Marion and State ot Indiana7 have invented certain new and useful improvements in Coin-Controlled Looks, et which the 'following is a specification.
This invention relates to coin controlled locks intended for any purpose which requires a coin to operate a lock and is often employed in public toilets. lockers, baggage receptacles, ete., wherein a locked door is opened by means of a coin. The present invention has among its objects the making of an improved lock which is simple in construction, reliable in operatiom and consists t but iew parts.
ln ycarrying the objects ot my invention into eti-ect7 l provide a coin operated lool; which is arranged so that upon inserting the proper coin from the outside a connection is formed which allows the backward movement or" -the bolt on turning the outside knob, at the same time closing the coin slot and unlocking the door. iFor example in the case of a toilet door, when the operator enters the roon and closes the door behindv him the coin drops into the coin box and lor-.ks the door which 'can be opened only from the inside by the occupant ot the room. llhen he leaves the room turning the inside lniob the coin slot uncovered putting` the mechanism in operative position again.
Reterring to the accompanying drawings torming a part hereof and in which similar ence characters denote similar parts,
F igure l, illustrates a front yview ot the lock with the cover and coin box lcut away and taken on the line l-l ot Figure 2, and.
Figure 2, a transverse section taken along line 2N2 of Figure l.
The casing l of the lock has a coin slot 2 in the upper portion thereof communicating with a slotted projection formed on the rear portion oir cover 33, and constitut ing a coin guide. A bolt Il, having a projection 5 and rear extensions (i and 7, the extension 7 being litted with spring 8 to hold bolt 4 in closing position, is secured to the easing by guides 9 and 10.
A stop 1l is 'formed on extension 6 and in proximity thereto is a shaft member l2 having an angular extension .i3 upon which is fitted a knob let forming the interior operating` handle. Fixed to the inner end of member l2 is a projection l5 adapted to contact with stop 1li. and having at its upper end a projection 16. coin slot cover l? is journaled in the casing at 18 and has a downwardly extending projection lf) adapted to be engaged by projection 1G and a coin. A forked member 2O is secured to the coin slot cover and engages a pin 2l iixedjto counter 22 adapted to record the number ot times the lock has been operated.
A shaft 23 is journaled in the casing and has an angular extension 24 with a knob 25 fixed thereto forming the exterior operating handle of the lock. Fixed to this inember is a projection 2G having a stop member 2? adapted to engage a projecting stop 2S termed on the casing. A horizontal stop 29 is 'formed on the easing at a point directly below portion 5 of the bolt which termed with a coin slot 30 for the reception of a coin 3l. rthe relativo sizes of projection 29 and coin slot 30 are such that when the proper coin is inserted it will be held in place by members 29 and 3() with the upper portion of the coin extending in proximity to member 19 and the lower portion to member 26. A coin smaller than the proper size will not be engaged by members 29 and 30 and will drop into the coin box without operating the lock. A coin too large cannot be inserted into coin slot 2. A projection 32 is termed on the upper end oi? the rear section 3?) and has a hollow portion which is adapted to engage a tongue is formed on the front part oi" cnsing l to hold the parts oil? the casing together. n
The operation oit the lock is as follows:
In locked position the relative positions ot' the parts are as shown in the drawings. coin is inserted in slot 2 and assumes the position shown in Figure l. This forms connections between stop member 26, the lower portion of the coin7 the bolt 4t and projection 19 oit coin slot cover 17. Upon turning the knob of exterior operating handle 25 the bolt 4 is shot back and coin slot cover 17 is pushed so as to cover coin slot 2. This allows the toilet door A to be opened and the operator to enter the room whereupon, in closing the door7 bolt 4 is again shot back by contacting with the fixed portion of the latch thereby throwing coin 31 down into the coin box (not shown).
Vhen the occupant leaves the room he turns interior operating handle 14 causing projection 15 to engage stop 11 thus drawino: back bolt 4 and causing stop 16 to engage with projection 19 uncovering the coin slot 2. As he closes the door behind him the door is locked and the mechanism is ready for the next occupant. A key 35 is provided so that it may be inserted by an attendant and the lock opened without the use oi' a coinby engaging stop 16 and pushing it forward causingibolt 4 to be shot back.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A lock for doors and the like comprising a casing having a slot for a coin, a bolt having a slot to receive and hold said coin, a pivoted closure tor the slot in the casing, sad coin adapted to contact with said closure, and means acting through the coin in the slot of said bolt to retract the bolt and to close the slot in the casing, substantially as set forth.
2. A lock for doors and the like comprising a casing having a slot for a coin, a bolt having a slot to receive and hold said coin, a pvoted closure ttor the slot in the casing, said coin adapted to contact with said closure, a counting device in said casing, a pivotal connection between said counting device and said closure, and means acting through the coin in the slot of said bolt to retract the bolt to close the slot in the casing and to operate said counting means, substantially as set forth.
3. A coin controlled lock comprising a casing, a bolt. an interior operating handle connected thereto. an exterior operating handle in proximity thereto, a coin slot, means ior making connection between said exterior handle and said bolt through a coin, means operated by said coin lior closing said coin slot comprising a pivoted coin slot cover in said casing having a projection thereon said coin being adapted to engage said projection, and means on said lirst handle also adapted to engage projection on said coin slot cover for uncovering said coin slot, substantially as set forth.
L1. )i coin controlled lock comprisng a casing, a bolt, an interior operating handle connected thereto, an exterior operating handle in proximity thereto, a coin slot in said casing. a corresponding coin slot in said bolt transversely thereof, a projection on said casing co-operating with said second slot to hold a coin therein, a projection lxed to said exterior handle adapted to en gage the lower portion of said coin for oplerating said bolt, a pivoted coin slot cover,
a projection thereon adapted to engage the upper porton of said coin for closing said coin slot. and means on said interior handle adapted to engage said projection for uncovering said coin slot, substantially as set forth.
5. ln a lock, a casing having a coin-slot, a bolt, coin-controlled means: to retract the bolt operable from the outer? side of the door, a pivoted coin slot cover, a rock shaft, a rock arm thereon engaging the bolt, a second rock arzn on said rock shaft adapted to retract the cover, and means at the inner side otI the door whereby the rock sh a'ft may be operated to retract the bolt said second rock arm being actuated by a key for turning the rock shaft to retract the bolt, substantially as set forth.
6. In a lock, a Acasing having a coin slot, a bolt having a transverse slot for passage of a coin, an exterior handle, a rock shaft therefor having an arm to bear against the coin. a ledge adjacent the. bolt adapted to hold in the slot only coins of a predetermined size and having a stop forming a guide for the coin, and an arm on said rock shaft arranged to abut against said stop to limit the movement or' the rock shaft, substantially as set Jforth.
ln witness whereof, l have hereunto set my hand at indianapolis, Indiana, this 24th day oit February, A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty.
CHARLES N. VAN CLEAVE.
