To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY H. ORDUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Laporte, in the county of Laporte and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tags, of which the follow- 1ng is a specification.

This invenion relates to tags particularly designed for use as shipping tags, or routing tags through a manufacturing plant, and an object of the invention is to provide a tag which is Iemovably enclosed in a protector of transparent water proof material, the said protector serving to protect any writing on the card from blurring or mutilation, or protecting it from being rendered unintelligible by the handling of the cards by mechanics or persons with soiled hands.

It is'a practice in modern manufacturing plants to attach routing cards to the various pieces of their products and for production clerks or workmen throughout the factory to make entries on the said routing card, which entries are afterwards entered in permanent records in the ofiice or used for purposes of determining cost, designating the workman who constructed the article and various other analogous purposes. It will be readily understood that during passage through a factory the routing card is handled by a number of diflerent mechanics whose work necessitate that their hands he soiled and the handling of the card by said soiled hands naturally detract from the legibility of the writing thereon and often renders it unintelligible. It is also a fact that in shipping that the shipping tags and the goods carried thereby are often subject to weather conditions and in cases of rain, snow or moisture in the air the writing on the tag is often blurred and becomes unin telligible resulting in the delay of the delivery of the goods or complete failure in the delivery.

It is an object of this invention to provide a routing or shipping tag which is removably encased in the cover of transparent water proof paper or analogous material, the said tag and cover being pivotally connected by means of the string receiving eyelet to permit the tag to be pivotally moved out of the cover for making entries thereon.

Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:

Referring more particularly to the drawings the improved form of shipping or routing tag comprises the tag 1 which is constructed of pasteboard, cloth, or any analogous material such as commonly used in manufacturing tags of this type, and the tag 1 has its lower edge rounded as clearly shown at 2 to permit unimpeded pivotal movement of the tag 1 out through the open edge of the cover 3. The cover?) is construoted of oiled or waxed paper or analogous transparent water proof material and it is shaped to enclose the tag or card 1, however, the cover has one of its lower corners cut away as shown at 4 to permit the engagement of a corner of the card or tag 1 with the thumb or forefinger of a person for moving the tag out of the cover. The tag 1 and cover 3 are pivotally connected intermediate their side edges and adjacent to their tops by means of an-eyelet 5 constructed of any approved material and forced through the tag and cover in the usual manner as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. A reinforcing washer 6 of any suitable material such as cardboard, linen, or the like may be placed between the binding flanges 7 of the eyelet 5 and the cover 3, to prevent tearing of the cover by the eyelet. The eyelet 5 serves the dual function of pivotally connecting the cover and tag and providing a string or cord receiving opening by means of which the tag may be attached to any desired article. The cover 3 is preferably formed of a single piece of material and it is folded to provide the sides 8 and 9 one of which engage upon each side of the tag 1, the fold extending across the bottom or curved edge 2 of the tag. If it is so desired an extension 10 may be formed along the edge of the side 8 remote from the cut away corners 4 and this extension folds inwardly to form a pocket in combination with the sides 8 and 9 for receiving the tag 1, the folded connection 11 between the extension 10 and side 8 serving as a stop to limit the pivotal movemont of the tag 1 into the cover. It is to be understood that this extension may be eliminated if desired without departing from the spirit of this invention.

It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in other manners and the parts associated in other relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.

Having thus described my invention what I claim is: y

1. As a new article of manufacture, a routing or shipping tag comprising a record receiving tag, a cover enclosing said tag and pivotally connected to the tag, and an extension formed along one side edge of said cover and folded between one side of the cover and said tag to provide a stop for limiting pivoted movement of said tag in one direction.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a routing or shipping tag comprising a record receiving tag, a cover of transparent material pivotally connected to and enclosing said tag, one of the corners of said cover cut away to permit the adjacent corner of the tag to project out of said cover, and an extension on said cover and folded inwardly for engagement with said tag to limit movement of the tag in one direction.

3. As a new article of manufacture, a routing or shipping tag comprising a record receiving tag, a cover of transparent water proof material enclosing said tag, a cord receiving eyelet pivotally connecting said cover and tag, one of the corners remote from said eyelet being cut away to permit the adjacent corner of said tag to project out of the cover, the end of said tag remote from said eyelet being rounded on a radius from the axis of said eyelet, and an extension formed along one side edge of said cover and folded between one side of the cover and tag to provide a folded edge for limiting pivotal movement of the tag in one direction relative to the cover.
