[TE STATES JETSON O. BENTLEY, OF SCHE'NEC'IADY, NEW YORK.
INCEN'SE BURNER.
Application filed July 29,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that JnTsoN O. BENTLEY, a
citizen of the United States of America, residing at Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, has invented new and usefulImprovements in Incense Burners, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and etlicient means for burning incense either in the stick or powdered form under conditions insuring the protection of surrounding objects from fire and preventing the ash or residue of the burning operation from falling upon surrounding objects; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a side view, and
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of a device embodying the invention.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the same.
The device consists of the tubular casing 10 preferably having a rolled or beaded upper edge as shown at 11 and a contained holder 12 consisting in the construction illustrated of the cylindrical spring of a clamp 13 commercially used as a paper clip and having the cooperating jaws 13 held in place by said spring 12 andv impelled by the latter to close the terminals 14 which, being slightly curved as indicated constitute an eilicient means for holding a stick 15 of incense. The upper end of the clamp by reason of the cylindrical spring constitutes an efiicient rest or support for a plate or pan 16 for holding incense in the powdered form.
The divergently disposed rear portions of the jaws 13 extend through suitable openings l? in the wall of the casing where they are secured, and with thetubular spring 12 in contact with the inner surface of said wall. by transverse pinslS so that the manipulation of the jaws to open and close the same in clamping or releasing a stick of incense can be accomplished. from the exterior of the casing by pressure upon the projecting rear ends of the jaws.
Also there is preferably attached to the side of the casing a match holder 19 ex tended in the construction illustrated to form a bracket 20 adapted to bear against a vertical supporting surface, such as that 1921. Serial No. 488,337.
indicated at 21, said bracket being provided with a suitable opening for engaging a supporting screw or nail 22.
For the purpose of catching ashes and other residue such as sparks and the like from burning incense the tubular casing which is otherwise open at its upper and lower ends is provided with a removable bot tom section 23 telescopically fitted to the lower end of the casing and held in place by bayonet joints consisting of studs 24 and slots 25. The bottom is preferably provided with air inlet or ventilating openings 26.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is 2- 1. An incense burning having an upright casing provided with means for supporting the same and with a clamp for supporting a stick of incense, the said clamp comprising jaw elements of which the handles or operating ends protrude through openings formed in the casing, the said jaw elements having transverse pins abutting the outer surface of the casing, and a spring disposed within and engaging the inner wall of the casing and yieldingly iin pelling the jaw elements toward each other.
2. An incense burner having a casing and an enclosed clamp supported by the casing and consisting of jaws connected by a cylindrical axially vertical spring whereby the upper end of the spring forms a support for an incense containing pan or plate. said. jaws being terminally held in engaging relation at the axis of the casing and provided with seats for engaging an interposed incense stick.
3. An incense burner having a casing and a clamp supported by the casing and consisting of jaws connected by a cylindrical spring disposed in an upright position whereby the upper end of the spring :t'ornis a support for an incense containing pan or plate said jaws being terminally held, in engaging relation at the center of the casing and provided with seats for ei'uz'a 'ng an interposed incense stick. the rearward y extending portions of said j aws being fitted and movably secured in openings in the wall of the casing for manipulation cxteriorlythereof.
In testimony whereof he affixes his signature.
