Description

Patented Apr.. 3, i923.
lla/l5 JESSE A. WILLIAMS, 0F BALTIMORE, IHARYLAN'D.
IROMNG BOARD.
Application led April 28, 1921.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that .ln-ssii. A. lViLLmMs, a citizen of the United Sta-tes, residing at Baltimore, in the Acity of Baltimore and State of Maryland, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in ironing Boards, of which the following is a specification,
Jllhis invention relates to ironing boards and has special reference to a folding ironing board and stand. n
One important object of the invention is to improve and simplify the genera-l construction of devices of this character.
A second important object of the inven` tion is to provide an improved arrangement of pivoting joints for an ironing board of this character whereby the board, when folded will occupy a minimum of depth.
A third important object f the invention is to provide an improved arrangement of structure for holding the frame in its expanded or set up position.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and z- Figure 1 is a perspective view of an ironing board constructed in accordance with this invention. y
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through such a board, the view showing the board fully set up in full lines and partially folded up in dotted lines. n
Figure 3 is a section similar to Figure 2 but showing the board completely folded.
In carrying out the object of this invention there is provided an ironing board 1 0 which has depending from one end a pair of ears 11, the ears being located at the sides of said end. Pivoted to the ears 11 by means of pivots 12 are uprights 13 which are connected at the upper ends by a crossbar 14. It is to be noted that the pivots 12 are located close to one side of the uprights 13. rlhe lower ends of these uprights are connected by a cross-bar 15. On the pivots 12 are also pivoted outer brace members 16, the pivots 12 being located close to one edge of these brace members. The brace members extend rearwardly of the board and the rearwardly extending Serial No. 465,100.
ends are connected by a transverse'brace 17. 'lhe opposite ends of the member 16 are similarly connected by a transverse brace 18. Pivoted on the transverse brace 18 are uprights 19, the brace 18 having connection with these upiights 19 close to one edge of each said uprights. The upper ends of the uprights 19 are connected to a transverse brace 2O on which, when the deyice is erected, the remaining end of the ironing board rests. Intermediate of the ends of the braces 16 is a transverse brace 21 having a rectangular opening 22 extending therethrough, the brace 21 being pivoted adjacent one edge of the respective members 16 as shown at 23. Through the openR ing 22 extends a diagonal brace 24C having reduced ends 25 which are receivable, when the device is set up, in openings 26 and 2T formed respectively in the transverse members 15 and 20.
Secured on the insides of the members 19 are suspension hooks 28 by means of which a basket 29 may be hung between the legs 19.
ln folding the device the legs 19 are moved away from the legs 13 until the end 25 which passes through the opening 27 is released. Similarly the legs 13 are removed to release the other end 25 from the member 15.
The several parts are therein moved as shown by the arrows in Figure 2. By reason of the eccentric pivot the legs and diagonal braces 16 and 24; are all brought to lie in a common direction parallel to the board 10 and close against the under side of said board as can be seen from Figure 3. Thus the device folds in an extremely compact manner.
There has thus been provided av simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
In combination with an ironing board, of a pair of ears depending from the ironing board at one end thereof, legs pivoted to said ears, a transverse member connected to lower ends of said legs and having a substantially central opening therethrough, diagonal brace members mounted on the pivots oi the legs, a rod connecting said brace members at one end, other legs pivotally mounted on said rod, a transverse brace connecting the upper ends of the last mentioned legs and having a substantially central opening extending therethrough, a third transverse member connecting the diagonal braces intermediate their ends and having a centrally disposed opening and a third diagonal brace extending through the last mentioned opening and having reduced ends receivable in the previously mentioned openings.
In'testimony whereof I a'ix my signature.
