To al?. whom it may concern Be it known 'that we, CHARLES J. MAR- SHALL and FRANK R. VnAvnR, citizens of the United States, residing at Beloit, in the county of Rock and State of lVisconsin,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Milling-lVlachine Adjustment and Quick Release, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a planing,` matching and finishing machine for acting upon lumber or other rough material to the end that in one passage through the machine the same shall be smooth finished on all its surfaces and tongued, grooved, hollowbacked or otherwise prepared for use as ceiling, {iooring or the like.
Among the features of construction characterizing the invention are improved means providing for the easy and accurate adjustment of 'the operating parts within a wide range to adapt the same tothe requirements of the work in hand; also-,improvements in the construction and mounting of working parts whereby 'to effect compactness, elasticity in operation and capacity for performing superior work.
In particular, the invention provides for the mounting of the several cooperating feed roll and guide-carrying members in such manner as to facilitate and insure accuracy of adjustment and to permit of quick release and withdrawal in case of emergency, as when a jamming of the stock appears imminent or for any other reason the progress of the stock through the machine is to be intermitted. Other features of improvement will become apparent as the construction and operation of the machine is understood. 1
In order that 'the invention may be readily understood by those skilled in the art, a preferred embodiment of the same in a f wood-working machine is set forth in the laccompanying drawings and in the description predicated thereon. invention is susceptible of embodiment in other varied constructional forms depending upon the material and the nature of the work to be performed, the drawings and description are to be taken in an illustrative and not in an unnecessarily limiting sense.

As viewed in Fig. 1, the material enters the machine from the left between the inrolls 11 and proceeds to the right between the yielding feed rolls 12 and the fixed feed rolls 18 arranged'in pairs, after which the material passes between out-rolls (not shown), and is discharged from the machine. In its passage through this particular machine. the material is hollowbacked by the cutter head 14, has its front face finished by the cutter head 15,(shown in dotted lines) and afterward automatically has its two edges respectively tongued and grooved, after passing beyond the medial portion of the machine illustrated, by cutter heads mounted in opposed relation helow and above (not shown).
The present invention is directed particujlarly to the maintenance of the entering` material under spring tension against a fixed guide while being acted upon by the first mentioned cutter head 14 and :tor quickly releasing said tension and withl drawing the housing of said cutter head in case of emergency; also means for accu`r rately positioning' and locking in place the abutment guide :tor the material while being acted upon by the cutter head 15, and the provision ot a quick release therefor;
' also the assemblage ot' ythe feed rolls and the yieldable mounting oi one roll ot each pair; also the arrangement of a yielding guide for the material as it passes from the cutter heads for dressing the front and rear tofthe cutter heads operating` upon its edges.
Having now reference to Figs. 2, 3 and 7,-it will be observed that the cutter head 14; is mounted in a lined portion 16 of the machine frame and is enclosed within a housing' forming an exhaust 17 for the chips. The housing` 17 is pivoted at 18 and has attached eccentrieally thereof at 19^fa latch rod 20 carrying a loose collar 2l between which and the lock nuts 22 is a spring 23. This latch rod lies within a bifurcated standard 24 against which the collar 21 bears under the tension of the spring 23, pressing` the housing and the guide member 25 yieldinfrly towards the fixed guide The guide 25 preferablv has an obliquely arranged portion l24 leading; thereto. lr retractable pi-n 27 is mounted in ay sleeve on the housing and downwardly spring-pressed for engagement in a hori- Zontally elongated recess in a stationary trame member, serving as a stop to limit the inwardly and outwardly swinging movement of the housing. It is usual in machinesrot this typeto mount the cutter heads in adjustable relation to a fixed guide rail which serves as an abutment for the material; in the present instance we iixedly mount the cutter head. for nishinp; the trout tace of the material and adjustably mount the ,guide rail for positioning' the material with reference to thehead and provide tor loclingg the same in this position subject to'a quick release and withdrawal in emergency. This arrai'igement will be most readily understood by reference to Figs. 4l, 5 and 6 taken in connection with Figs. 1 and 3.
Having' reference to these figures. the bracket e1 Xed to the machine trame carries a casting 4t2 having; dovetail formation whichserves a In'uide for the slidable trame 413 which has dependingv side members 43 which snugly tit against the side members 42a of the casting L12. The castingis provided iu its medial portion with a dovetail groove within which is guided a slide 5l havingupstandirm` ears 52 serving' as journals for a rock shaft 53 carrying rock arms 5d connected by means ot links 55 with the ends of the cross shaft e9. A loose collar 5G on the rock shaft is provided with an interiorlv threaded sleeve 57 within which is screwed a tie rod 58 slidable within a bore 59 of the cross shaft i19 and havingva head 60 llO which bears upon the opposite side of said shaft. l
AifiXed to the rock shaft is a lever 61 by means of which the said shaft may be rocked. The slide 51 is moved inwardly and outwardly by means of a screw spindle 62 squared at its outer end and having a threaded engagement at its inner end with the machine frame at 63.
If it be desired to adjust the position of the guide 47 to the finishing of a thicker piece of stock, the clamp rod 44 is released by means of the lever 45, leaving the frame 43 free to slide upon the casting 42. By means of the hand lever 61 the shaft 53 is rocked andby means of the link connection with the ears 48 the frame 43 is drawnoutwardly, the cross shaft 49 sliding upon the ,tie rod 58, until the guide 47 is brought to the'eXact position desired. The frame 43 carrying the guide 47 is now lockedto the casting 42 by the clamp rod 44 and the lever 45. The screw spindle 62 is thereupon turnedmoving the slide 51 with its ears 52 outwardly until the head 60 of the tie rod contacts with the shaft 49 indicating a proper` distance between centers of the shafts 49 and 53, completing the adjustment of the guide frail.
If it be desiredto lessen the distance between the guide rail 47 and thel cutter head 15 to act upon thinner stock, the clamp is again released by means of itslever 45, the screw spindle 62` is actuated to move the slide 51 and the frame 43 inwardly, the links V55 being straightened, until the guide 47 is nearer the cutter head 15 than the desiredy adjustment. Thereupon the lever 61 is employed to retract the guide 47 by means of the links 55 until it reaches the precise position desired. It is here locked by means of the lever 45 and then the screw spindle 62 is retracted until the head 60 of the tie rod 58 contacts. as before, with the shaft 49, indicating the proper distance between centers of the shafts 49 and 53, and thus oompleting the new adjustment of the guide.
In case of emergency, .the lguide 47 vmay,
be quickly withdrawn by pushing the lever 45 downward to unclamp the guide-carrying frame and then pulling upon the lever 61 to withdraw the guide and frame by means of the links 55. After the` emergency has passed. the guide may be accurately positioned as before by pushing the lever 61 inwardly to straighten the links, and then lifting the lever 45 to clamp the parts rigidly in position. y
Having reference to Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings, it will be observed that each of the feed rolls 12 is mounted to yield towards and from the associated' feed roll 13, being drawn towards the roll 13 by means of the spring 64 upon rod 65 pivoted at 66 to the roll shaft bearings 12b which,in turn, is pivoted at 68 to the yoke 67, allowing the upper ends of the feed roll shaft together i with the roll 12 to swing about the pivot 68. Each of the feed rolls 12 is driven from the power shaft 69 by means of the bevel gear 70 in mesh with a similar gear 71 carried by a countershaft 72 carrying a pinion 73 in mesh with a pinion 74 on the shaft 75 of the feed roll, while each of the feed rolls 13 is driven from the countershaft 72 by a pinion 76 in mesh with a pinion 7 6 driven by pinion 77 on said countershaft.
The rearward swinging motion of the roll bearing 12b is resisted by the spring 64 acting upon the collar 64a and adjusted by the lock nuts 65a. In case of need, the roll bearing 12b and with it the feed roll 12 may be quickly withdrawn from the feed roll 13 by releasing the engagement of the spring 64 after the same manner described with reference to the spring 23 for the first guide. As anvabutment during lassemblage and when the spring 64 is released a set screw 78 is provided the inner end of which is adapted to contact with the abutment 79 on roll bearings 12b. A
The assemblage of the yoke 67 with reference to the machine frame is most clearly illustrated in Figs. 9 and 11 having reference to Figs. 1, 4 and 8. A lug 8O carried by the yoke 67 and projecting within an opening 81 of the machine frame is acted uponv at both sides by the heads 82 of bolts 83 threaded into the frame at 84 and provided with lock nuts 85. By this means the adjustment of the yielding feed roll 12 with relation to the fixed feed roll 13 is primarily adjusted through the positioning of the pivot point 68, depending upon the yielding action of the' springs 64 to impart theproper pressure from the rolls upon the interposed material. y After leaving the finishing cutter head and passing between the feed rolls 12 and 13 the material is Afirmly held for presentation to the cutter heads (not shown) for tonguing and grooving or otherwise finishing the edges, by means of a guide plate 86 10) mounted upon the slide 87 housed within the frame 88 and spring-pressed forwardly 'by means of the spring 89 which is adjustable by means of the threaded collar 90 upon the spindle 91, the position of the threaded collar being maintained by means of the set screw 92. lug 93 upstanding from the slide 87 provides for a limitation of the movement of said slide which is adjustable by means of the set screws 94.
We claim:
1. In a machine of the-character described. a cutter head, a stock abutment rail opposed to the operative face thereof, stock guides 1 disposed one in advance and the other at the rear of the cutter head, means to yieldingly press both guides towards the abutment rail, and means to adjust the forward limit of movement of the second guide, said last mentioned guide and mount including a slide carrying` the guide. a second slide, a yieldable connection therebetween, and means for adjustingl position of the second slide to determine the operative position of the guide.
2. In machine of the character described, a cutter hea-d., stock abutment rail opposed to the operative face thereof, stock guides disposed one in advance and the other at the rear of the cutter head, means to yieldingly press both guides towards the abutment rail, and means to adjust the forward limit of movement of the second guide, said last mentioned guide and mount including a slide carrying the guide, a second slide, an operative connection therebetween comprising a bolt threaded in one slide and movable in the other, a compression spring on said bolt connection.y and 'ascrew spindle rotatably mounted in the second slide but axially fixed relatively thereto and threaded in a fixed support.
3. In a machine of the character described, a cutter head, a fixed abutment rail opposed to the operative side thereof a movable stock guide at one' side thereof, a. suitably anchored spring pressing said guide towards the abutment rail, and means to release said spring to permit the withdrawal of the guide, a second adjustable stock guide mounted at the other side of the cutter head and yieldingly pressed towards the abutment rail, said last mentioned guide and mount including a slide carrying the guide, a second slide, a connection therebetween comprising a bolt threaded in one slide and movable in the other, a compression spring lon said bolt connection, means for adjusting the tension of the spring, and a screw spindle provided with a handle and rotatably' mounted in the second slide but axially fixed relatively thereto and threaded in a fixed support.
4L. In a machine of the character described, a machine bed, a cutter head mounted thereon, a stock guide opposed to the operative face of the cutter head, and an adjust-able and releasable mounting for the guide comprising a guide-carrying frame having a sliding connection with the bed, means to releasably clamp the frame to the bed. a slide having a guiding` connection with the bed, a rock shaft journaled in` one of the sliding` members and having an arm and link connection with the other sliding member, and a lever for rocking the shaft.
5. In a machine of the character described, a machine bed, a cutter head mounted thereon, a stoclr guide opposed to the operative face of the `cutter head, and an adjustable and releasable mounting for the guide comprising a guide-carrying frame having a sliding connection with the bed, means to releasably clamp the frame to the bed, a
slide having a guiding connection with the bed, a rock shaft journaled in the slide, an arm and link connection between the rock shaft and the guide-carrying frame, and a lever for rocking the shaft.
6. In a machine of the character described, a machine bed, a cutter head mounted thereon, a stock guide opposed to the operative face of the cutter head, and an adjustable and releasable mounting for the guide comprising a guide-carrying frame having a sliding connection with the bed, means to releasably clamp the frame to the bed, a slide having a guiding connection with the bed, a rock shaft journaled in the slide, an arm, and link connection between the rock shaft and the guide-carrying frame, a headed tie rod connecting the slide and frame and slidable in one 0f them, and a lever for rocking the shaft.
7. In a machine of the character described, a machine bed, a cutter head mounted thereon, a stock guide opposed to the operative face of the cutter head, and an adjustable and releasable mounting for the guide comprising a4 guide-carrying frame having a sliding connection with the bed, means to releasably clamp the frame to the bed, a slide having a guiding connection with the bed, a roc-l shaft journaled in the slide, an arm and link connection between the roch shaft and the guide-carrying frame, a headed tie rod connecting the slide and frame and slidable in the frame, and a lever for rocking the Shaft.
8. In a machine of the character described, a machine bed, a cutter head mounted thereon, a stock guide' opposed to the operative yface of the cutter head, and an adjustable and releasable mounting for the guide comprising a guide-carrying frame having a sliding connection with the bed and having side members embracing ythe bed, means to releasably clamp the frame to the bed coinprising a cam device engaging the side meinbers, and a` lever to actuatethe cam device to press the sides of the frame and bed together, a slide having a guiding connection with the bed, a rock shaft j ournaled in the slide, an arm and link connection between the rock shaft and the guide-carrying frame, and a lever for rocking the shaft.
9. In a machine of the character described, a. machine bed, a cutter head mounted thereon, a stock guide opposed to the operative face of the Lcutter head, and an adjustable and releasable mounting for the guide comprising a guide-carrying frame having a dovetail sliding connection with the bed and having side members embracingthe bed, means to releasably clamp the frame to the bed comprisinga bolt engaging the side members and a lever to actuate the bolt to press the sides of the frame and bed together, a slide having a dovetail sliding conses nection with the bed, a rock shaft journaled in the slide, arm and link connections between the rock shaft and the guidecarrying frame, a headed tie rod connecting the slide and frame and slidable in the frame, and a lever for rocking the shaft.
10. In a machine of the class described, a
machine frame, a cutter head, an adjustable guide for holding stock to the action of the cutter head, a feed roll effective to hold stock against the guide, a movable frame forming a shiftable support for the feed roll, means adjustable on the machine frame and cooperating with the movable frame to limit its movement toward and from the fective upon said guide whereby it may be moved from the cutter and toward the cutter to the selected limit.
12. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a rotary cutter, a pair of cooperating feed rolls at each side thereof for transmitting stock past the cutter, a guide rigidly supported to hold work to the action of the cutter, yielding pressure means effective upon one roll of each pair to urge the same toward the guide, and quickly operable means supporting the guide whereby it may be retracted from the cutter.
13. In a machine of the character described, including a pair of feed rolls between which the stock passes longitudinally of the machine, means to adjustably and yieldingly position one of the rolls comprising a casting within which the shaft of the roll is journaled, said casting pivoted to swing in a transverse plane perpendicular to the path of the stock, a lug carried by the casting and projecting between portions of the machine frame, bolts oppositely threaded into the frame with their heads bearing on the two sides of the lug, and a releasable spring drawing the pivoted casting'and its roll towards the other roll.
14. In a machine ofy the character described, a machine frame, a tool mounted thereon for acting on the stock, a stock abutment rail, a stock guide having its face in opposed spaced relation -to the rail, a slide supporting the guide, means for varylng the limit of movement of the slide toward the rail, a spring bearing upon the slide tov press the guidetowards the rail, and means to adjust the tension of the spring without varying the limit of movement of the slide.
15. In a machine of the character described7 a machine frame, a tool mounted thereon for acting on the stock, a stock abutment rail, a stock guide having its face in opposed spaced relation to the rail, a guide-carrying slide, means for varying` the limit of movement of the slide toward the rail, a housing for the slide, a rod secured in the slide longitudinally thereof, a spring about the rod and bearing upon the slide to press the guide towards the rail, and means to ladjust the tension of the spring without varying the limit of movement of the slide toward the rail.
16. In a machine of the character described, a machine frame, tools mounted thereon for acting on the stock, a stock abutment rail, a stock guide having its face in opposed spaced relation to the rail, and means to adjustably and yieldingly position the guide comprising a guide-carrying slide having a laterally projecting` lug, a housing for the slide out away to accommodate the lug, set screws seated in the housing and acting as abutments for each side of the lug to limit the range of movement of the slide, a recess in the rear end of the slide, a compression spring within the recess, and means to adjust the tension of the spring.
17. In a machine of the character described, a machine frame, tools mounted thereon for acting on the stock, a stock abutment rail, a stock guide having its face in opposed spaced relation to the rail, and means -to adjustab'ly and yieldingly position the guide comprising a guide-carrying slide havinga laterally projecting lug, a housing for the slide cutaway to accommodate the lug, set screws seated in the housing and acting as abutments for each side of the lug to limit the range of vmovement of the slide,
a ro-d secured in the slide longitudinally thereof, a recess in the rear end of the slide, a compression spring disposed about the rod within the recess, and means to adjust the tension of the spring comprising a collar threaded on the rod as a rear abutment for the spring.
