To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANKLIN L. LANE and FRANK R. WEAVER, citizens of the United States, residing in Beloit, county of Rock, and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Mountings, of which the following is a specification, the same being a division of our copending application, Serial No. 4,176, filed January 25, 1915. 5
The invention relates to certain constructional features of a planing, matching and finishing machine for acting upon lumber or other rough material to the end that in one passage through the machine the same shall be smooth finished on all its surfaces and also tongued, grooved, hollow-backed, or otherwise prepared for use as ceiling, flooring, and the like. v i
Among the features of construction characterizing the invention are improved means providing for the easy and accurate adjustment of the operating parts within a wide range to adapt the same to the requirements of the work in hand; also improvements in the construction and mounting of the working parts whereby to effect compactness, elasticity in operation, and capacity for performing superior work; also other improvements in construction and operation which will hereinafter be made apparent.
In order that the invention may be readily understood by those skilled in the art, a preferred embodiment of the same in a wood working machine is set forth in the accompanying drawings and in the description based thereon. As, however, the invention is susceptible of embodiment in other and varied constructional forms dependent upon the material and the nature of the work to be performed, the drawing and description are to be taken in an illustrative and not in an unnecessarily limiting sense.

Referring to the drawings, the machine frame is indicated atkS and has journaled therein in a suitable manner the shaft 9 of a fixed feed roll (not shown) driven from a suitable source of power by means of gears 2 of Fig. 1;
10, 11, the gear 10 also driving a gear 12 on a suitably-journaled shaft 13 and'through it by means of a gear 14, the shaft 15 of the yielding feed roll (not shown).
The following provision is made for the automatic yielding and the manual quick release of the yielding member of'each pair of feed rolls, the description as applied to the first pair being also applicable to each of the other pairs: Having particular reference to Fig. 1 it will be observed that the feed roll shaft 15 and its gears 12 and 14 are inclosed within a housing 16 adapted to swing about the shaft 1% as a pivot. housing 16 is provided with a boss 17 serving as a bearing for a pivot 18 by means of which a lever 19 is fulcrumed to thehousing. This lever 19 is also fulcrumed at 20 in a bearing block 21 threaded upon the spindle 22 having a squared outer end 23 and guided within an arm 24 carried by the the right of the fulcrum 18, the 'efiect'being to hold the lever in its normal closed position. If the lever 19 be drawn outwardly toward the observer the first result is to swing the outer end of the link spindle to the leftand to the other side of the fulcrum 18 and thereafter the pivot'18 and with it ;the free end of the housing and also the shaft 15 with the yielding feed roll are swung outwardly about the pivot 20 where by the space between the feed rolls is in- The creased and the engagement of the rolls upon a piece of material therebetween is released. By means of the levers 19 it will thus be seen that the materialin the machine may be quickly released from engagement between any pair of feed rolls for fixed upon its upper end a hollow-backed cutter head 30 fitted with knives 31 adapted to finish one side of the material and to hollow-back the same by means of the cutter part 32. The shape of these knives and the nature of the work to be performed is not a material feature of the invention as the knives of the cutter head may be changed to accord with the finish desired to be given to that face of the material indicated at 33 in Fig. 3, in the position to be operated upon. The cutter shaft 28 has its bearing within a boxing 34 provided with a lateral extension 35 which is transversely apertured for the reception of the tapered end of a fixed shaft 36 securely fixed therein by means of the lag bolt 36 and extending transversely of the machine frame through guiding brackets 37 within which it is slidable. Also, rotatably mounted but without longitudinal movement in the boxing 34 is an adjusting spindle 3S threaded within a boss 39 of the machine frame and having a squared end 38 by means of which spindle the boxing 34 and with it cutter head and shaft are adjusted toward and from the machine frame causing the fixed shaft 36 to slide within its guiding brackets 37. A set screw 40 is provided for gaging the adjustment of the cutter head and the parts are firmly clamped in adjusted position by means of blocks 41 guided for vertical movement within the bosses 42 of the brackets 37 upon screw spindles 43 threaded in the machine frame at 44 and provided with operating handles 45. The clamping blocks 41 have a portion hollowed out, as indicated at 46, to fit the surface of the shaft 36 so that when the spindles 43 are rotated the blocks 41 are caused to engage and firmly clamp the shaft 36 so as to maintain the shaft 28 and the cutter head 30 in adjusted position.
The cutter head 30 is inclosed within a housing 47 having an open side 48 for the attachment of an exhaust device to carry off shavings and the like, the housing being pivoted eccentric to the shaft 28 for swinging movement in order to give access to the cutter head. The swinging housing is latched and released in the following manner: A spring pressed bolt 49 is vertically mounted within the housing, the lower end projecting at 50 and the upper end provided with a handle 51 by means of which it may be lifted in opposition to its spring 52. A keeper rod 53 is horizontally mounted within a bracket 54 carried by the non-rotatable shaft 36 and equipped with a spring 55 bearing at one end against said bracket and at the other end against the washer 56 and the nut 57. The outer end of the keeper rod is provided with an aperture for the reception of the lower end 50 of the bolt and has a downturned terminal portion 58 up which the end of the bolt is adapted to ride before reaching the recess. The keeper rod also has a rearwardly facing shoulder portion 59 adapted to be engaged'by the nOse 60 of the latch lever 61.
The housing 47 has a lip portion 47 a which acts as a chip breaker and is held yieldingly in contact with the stock passing through the machine by means of the spring It will be observed that as the cutter and housing are adjusted toward and from the stock by the sliding of the shaft 36 the action of the spring 55 on the chip breaker would vary were it not that the bracket carrying the rod 53 and spring 55 is in turn carried bythe shaft 36, whereby the tension of the spring remains unchanged under various adjustments of the cutter head.
To release the housing 47 the bolt 49 is retracted out of engagement with the keeper by means of its handle 51 and may then be swung to the open position. In closing, the lower end of the bolt rides up the inclined end of the keeper rod and snaps into the recess. This operation would ensue without difficulty were it not that the spring 55 acts through the keeper upon the bolt to pull the housing strongly to the right as viewed in Fig. 2. In order to hold the keeper in its extended position against the spring 55 until engaged by the bolt 49 the lever 61 is provided by means of which the operator pushing downward upon the end of the lever bears outwardly against the shoulder 59 of the keeper rod, holding the rod in extended position for easy engagement with the bolt until the latter has engaged within the recess. The lever 61 may also be utilized to relieve the tension upon the keeper rod while the bolt is being withdrawn in the opening movement. of the lever 61 is limited by means of the adjustable stop 62 in order that the spring 55 may not be allowed to draw the keeper rod 53 inwardly too far to be engaged by the bolt or to destroy the engagement between the shoulder 59 and the nose 60 of the lever.
For a detailed description of the mechanism hereinbefore described and illustrated in connection with a complete wood-working machine of the matcher type reference is made to our c0-pending application Serial Number 4176 hereinbefore referred to, the quick-release mechanism for the yielding feed rolls not being claimed herein but in said application.
We claim: 7
1. The combination of a hinged body, and a latch mechanism therefor comprising a bolt, swinging with said body, a keeper having an aperture adapted to receive the bolt end in the closed position, the keeper slidably mounted in a suitable support for movement substantially tangent to the arouate path of the bolt, a spring acting on the The upward movement keeper to retain the same in retracted posi tion, and a lever arranged to act on the keeper in opposition to the spring.
2. The combination of a hinged body, and alatch mechanism therefor comprising a slidable spring-pressed bolt swinging with said body, a keeper having an aperture adapted to receive the bolt end, the keeper slidably mounted for movement in a direction at right angles to the slidable move ment of the bolt and tangent to the swinging movement thereof, a spring acting on the keeper to retain the same in retracted position, and a lever arranged to act on the keeper in opposition to the springto ad- Vance the keeper to meet the bolt.
3. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a frame, a stockguiding support fixed thereon, a second frame, a cutter head mounted in the second frame in operative relation to the stock guide, and means to adjust the relation of the cutter head and stock support comprising a shaft connecting the two frames and slidable in one of said frames and fixed in the other, a screw spindle threaded in one of said frames and journaled in the other whereby to move the two frames toward and from each other, a gage stop to determine the adjustment, friction means to clamp the parts in adjusted relation comprising a block having a cam face adapted to frictionally engage the slidable portion of the shaft, and a screw spindle carrying the block and mounted in the frame to move the block toward and from the shaft to clamp the same.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of a frame, a second frame, a swinging body hinged to the second frame, means to adjust the frames bodily toward and from each other, and a latch mechanism for swinging the body comprising a bolt, a keeper having an aperture adapted to receive the bolt end in the closed position, a bracket moving with the second frame in its adjustment toward and from the first frame, the keeper slidably mounted in the bracket, a spring acting on the keeper and the bracket to retain the keeper yieldingly in retracted position, and a lever arranged to act on the keeper in opposition to the spring.
5. In a machine of the character de scribed, the combination of a frame, a second frame, a swinging body hinged to the second frame, means to adjust the frames bodily toward and from each other, and a latch mechanism for swinging the body comprising a bolt swinging with said body, a keeper having an aperture adapted to receive the bolt end in the closed position, a bracket moving with the second frame in its adjustment toward and from the first frame, the keeper slidably mounted in the bracket for movement substantially tangent to the arcuate path of the swinging bolt, a spring acting on the keeper and the bracket to re tain the keeper yieldingly in retracted position, and a lever arranged to act on the keeper in opposition to the spring.
