To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, PETER A. SOLEM, citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Planing Machinery, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wood planing machinery employing a side-head or heads, of which so-called planing and matching machines, flooring machines, and molding machines may be instanced as examples.
It is the object of my invention to provide novel means for mounting the upright shaft to whichcthe side cutter-head is se cured; further to provide novel means for adjusting the side-head or heads vertically;
further to provide novel means for support- I ing the side-head hanger or hangers; further to provide novel clamping means for the same; and further to provide novel contact-means for the stock.
It is the object of my invention further to provide a novel construction and mounting for the side-head hanger or hangers whereby ready removal of the shaft-bearing parts is accomplished; further to provide novel adjusting and clamping mechanism for the sidehead hangers whereby either or both of said hangers may be adjusted or clamped from the outside of the machine; further to provide novel means y for supporting the upright cutter-head shaft and adjusting the same; further to provide novel clamping means for releasing or clamping either side-head hanger independently of the other side-head hanger from the outside of the machine-frame; and the invention will be further readily understood from the following description and claims, and from the drawings, in which latter Figure 1 is a front end elevation of my improved device, the frame of the machine being shown in cross-section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig.` 3 is a side elevation of the right-hand hanger and its attendant parts, the parts between the hangers being shown in section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Side-head hangers 13, 14C, also known as matcher-hangers are mounted in the machine. I shall designate the left side-head hanger as 13 and the right side-head hanger as 14, either one or both of which may be employed. These side-head hangers are to a great extent duplicates of each other and in describing the parts of one which are duplicated inthe other, I shall refer to the duplicated parts by similar but primed reference numerals, the description referring primarily to thel left-hand hanger.
The side-head hanger, as shown, comprises a plate 15, hereinafter also termed a matcher-plate, a leg 16, and a bearing-yoke 17. The plate is slidable laterally between guides 18, 19, rigid on the main frame, and shown on cross-girts of the same. (See Figs. 2, 3, 4e and 5.) vThe guide 18 is shown as a dovetail guide with which a guideway 20y on the plate 15 coperates. 'Ihe guideway 20 comprises closely adjacent front and rear walls for forming a narrow and long guide- Y ates.

25 is a clamp-slice arranged to clamp the plate in adjusted positions. (See Figs. 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7.) It has a clamping face 26 which coacts with the cross-girt on which the guideway is located. rlhe clamp-shoe preferably extends a substantial distance across the width 0f the plate. A clampscrew 27 is threaded into a threaded bearing 28 in the plate and journaled in a bearing 29 in the clamp-slice. A spiral-gear 3() is secured to the clamp-screw, the clamp-shoe being received between said spiral gear and the plate for being clamped therebetween, the clamp-shoe having a ridge 31 thereon which impinges the plate.
The clamping face of the clamp-shoe is preferably interrupted at the screw position, see the interruption 32, Fig. 7, so that clamping effect is insured at points distanced from said screw toward the ends of the plate, for distributing the clamping eifect over a larger area. In this manner, further, three clamping points are provided for the clamp-shoe, namely, the ridge and the clamping faces adjacent the respective ends of the clamp-shoe.
Each of the side-head hangers is provided with a clampand each of the clamps is independently operable, preferably from the outside of the machine, so as to independently' clamp the side-head hangers rigidly in the machine in order that either sidehead hanger may be adjusted independently of the other and clamped without affecting Y the adjustment or clamped relation of the other. By providing these independent clamps I avoida disarrangenient of adjustment which would otherwise result from mere unclamping of a side-head hanger and reclamping of the side-head hanger without adjustment of the same. The clamping is effected by a clamping force exerted in a direction at substantial right angles to the plane of the guiding face, so as to reduce the tendency of .disarrangement of adjustment to the minimum, the guiding and clamping being -effected preferably at opposite sides of the cross-girt.

The leg` 16 of the side-head hanger is releasably secured to the plate 15 by bolts 47, and has a positioning connection 48, shown as a tongue and groove connection, for positioning the depending leg in line with the guideways of the plate. (See Figs. 4 and 9.) The bearing-yoke 1T is adjustably mounted on the leg and has bearings 49, 50, thereon in separated relation for an upright shaft 51, to which a side-head is suitably releasably secured, and having an operating pulley 53 between the bearings.

The adjusting screw 61 has threaded connection in a bearing 62 in the leg 16 and the adjusting screw 61 has threaded connection in a bearing 62 on the leg 16. Upon lateral adjustment of either or both the side-head hangers, the same are clamped in place by means of the clamp-shoes 25, 25', in the manner hereinbefore stated. The adjusting screws G1, G1 are longitudinally positioned by collars G3, (33 thereon, received in bearings 64, 64', whose outer ends are formed by a cap 65 secured in place by a bolt 66, similar to the end-positioning means of the shafts 35. The outer ends ofthe adjusting screws are provided with turning means, shown as squared ends G7, 67', arranged to receive a suitable socket-crank, similar to the part 46.
The manner of rsupporting the side-head hangers by supporting the plates of the saine at front and rear in guideways and providing a guideway at the front of the lower end of the same, provides a three-point support for each of the side-head hangers, the principal support being obtained from the front and rear guides at the top of the same, the
rhe shafts are positionedl guide at the bottom being a steadying support. The manner of clamping the sidehead hangers in place after adjustment permits the clamping action to take place with minimum disarrangement of the adjusted positions of the side-head hanger.
The bearing-yoke is adjustable up and down on the depending leg, the leg being provided with a guideway in which a guide '71 on the bearing-yoke has sliding movement. (See Figs. 1, 2, 5 and 6.)
72 is a screw-rod journaled in a bearing 73 on the leg and having threaded connection in a bearing 74 on the bearing-yoke. A spira-l gear 75 is secured to the screw-rod, a collar 76 preventing endwise movement or' the screw-rod in its bearing 73. A spiral gear 77 has a hub 78 ournaled in a bearing 79 on the leg and meshes with the spiral gear 75 for operating the same. A collar 80 on the hub prevents endwise movement of the hub. Operating shafts 84, 84, are provided or the spiral gears 77, 77. These respectively have spline-connections S5, 85, with said spiral gears. The shaft 84 also passes through an opening 86 in the leg 16, and an opening 86 in the leg 16 provides clearance for the shaft 84.
The operating shafts 84, 84', are journaled in bearings 87, 87, and at their' outer ends are provided with operating means 90, 90', shown as squared ends of said shafts, adapted to receive a usual crank-handle for turning the same, similar to the part 46. These operating shafts are located in endwise positions by means or' collars 91, 91, in said bearings, the outer portions of said bearings being in a cap 92 releasably secured to the main frame by a bolt 93. Upon removal of the cap the operating shafts may be removed endwise from the machine.
96, 96 are shaving-hoods received about the cutter-heads, the shaving-hood 96 being releasably pivoted on a pin 97 secured on the plate 15. this shaving-hood having a chipbreaker' 98 thereon adjustably secured thereto, the stem 99 thereof being slidable in a socket 100 of the shaving-hood and secured in place by a set-screw 101. The shavinghood 96 is releasably secured to the plate 15 by bolts 102. The swinging shavingchute and chip-breaker are held against the stock by means of a weight 103 secured to the swinging shaving-chute at 104 by means of a flexible connection 105 passing over pulleys 106, 107.
110 is a hold-down bar adjustable up and down on a standard 111 on the plate by means of an adjusting screw 112 journaled on the hold-down bar in a bearing 113 and threaded into `a bearing 114 on the standard, there being a guiding connection 115 between the hold-down bar and standard. A bolt 116 threaded into the hold-down bar and received through a slot 117 in the standard rigidly secures the parts in adjusted relations. i
The standard is adjustable crosswise of the plate, having guiding connection 118 therewith, being adjusted by means of an adjusting screw 119 journaled in a bearing 120 on the plate and threaded into a threaded bearing 121 of the standard, a bolt 122 being received through a slot 123 in the base of the standard and threaded into the plate for securing the parts inradjus'ted relations. The lower portion of the inside face of the standard acts as a side-guide for the stock. The hold-down `face 124 of the hold-down bar is located between the upper guides of the hanger, the adjusting means therefor being located substantially above one of said guides.
I prefer to provide a lower bridge-piece 126 coperating with the hold-down bar. This bridge-piece is arranged to support the lateral edge of the stock while passing the side cutter-head, and will be described with particular' reference to the right-hand hanger. (See Figs. 3, 6 and 7.) The bridgepiece is adjustable up and down on an apron 127 depending from the plate 15 and clamped in place by means of bolts 128 received through slots 129 and threaded into said apron, the adjustment being effected by means of a. set-screw 130 threaded into a bearing 131 at the lower end of said apron and locked in place by a lock-nut 132 and bridge-piece being supported between the front and rear guides of the matcher-plate, and received in a recess 133 at the inner edge of the matcher-plate. The standard 111 has a recess 134 for accommodating the support. This adjustment raises and lowers the bridge-piece with relation to the stock-supporting face of the table, which is important especially where a formed cutter, such asa tongue or groove cutter, is being employed on the side cutter-head, and further permits the taking up of wear which may be occasioned by the passing' of stock over the stock-supporting face of said bridge-piece. Locating said hold-down bar and the bridgepiece betweeny front and rear guides at the top of the hanger affords an especially rigid construction in which vibrations are reduced to the minimum` and is especially valuable in high-'speed machines.
The stock is arranged to be fed .against a side-guide 136, whose guiding face is in line with the guiding face at the lower end of the Standard 111. This side-guide is adjustable laterally. There is a stationarily positioned chip-breaker 137 at the feed-in side of the right-hand cutter-head adjustable toward and from the cutter-head in lines parallel to and at right angles to the lines ot feed of the stock. It is preferably mounted on a support 138 which may be part of the side-guide having connection therewith by ivoVV a web 139. Lateral adjustment is provided by means of a set-screw 140 bearing against said support and having threaded connection in a lug l-ll on the plate, a bolt 142 passing through a slot 11i-3 in said support and threaded into the sheltl for-clamping` the support in place. The chip-breaker 137 has a guideway 14e-i cooperating with the guide 1&5 on said support for adjusting the chipbrealer parallel to the line of feed of the stock, a bolt 146 passing through a slot 147 in the chip-breaker and threaded in a tlneadedbearing in saidsupport, clamping the parts in place. By these means a laterally adjustable side-guide is provided above each top guide of the hanger, respectively at front and rear of the cutter-head, a coperating edge support and hold-down, having up and down adjustment, being located between said side-guides and said top hangerguides.
My improved device provides ready means for removing the bearing-portions of the side-head shafts and for readily replacing the same in correct positions. This is accomplished by removal of the caps and. 92, whereby the adjusting shafts may be turned and moved longitudinally for disconnection with the legs. The bolts 59 and clips 58 are removed, whereupon the lower ends of the legs may be swung forwardly and the legs and bearing-yokes thereon removed through the bottom of the machine.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a planing machine, the combination of a side-head hanger and a three-point laterally extending guiding suspension therefor, the guiding points whereof are located respectively at the top-front, the top-rear and the bottoni-front portions of said hanger, said guiding suspension at said topfront of said hanger comprising closely adjacent plane walls extending up and down and laterally parallel for preventing swiveling of said hanger, and clamping means for said hanger at the top-rear portion of said hanger.
2. In a planing machine, the combination of a side-head hanger and laterally extending guiding supports therefor respectively at the front and rear of the top of said hanger, one of said guiding supports comprising closely adjacent plane laterally parallel guiding walls extending up and down, the other of said guiding supports having a substantially horizontal guiding face, means for laterally shifting said hanger lengthwise of said guiding supports, and a clamp for clamping said hanger in adj usted positions comprising a clamp-shoe, said clamp-shoe having` a clamping face which has an interruption therein for forming separated plane clamping faces parallel with A. said substantially horizontal guiding face, and a clamp-screw for said shoe at said interruption clampingly acting perpendicular to said substantially horizontal guiding face.
3. In a planing machine, the combination of a side-head hanger, laterally extending guiding means therefor, means for adjusting said hanger laterally along said guiding means, said side-head hanger having a flat guiding wall and clamping means for said hanger comprising a ledge, a clamp-shoe, a clamp-screw for the latter, said clamp-shoe provided with a stiffening and guiding clamp-ridge at one side of said clamp-screw cooperating with said guiding wall of said hanger and with a clamping face at the other side of said clamp-screw, said clamping face cooperating with said ledge and having an interruption therein adjacent to said clamp-screw.
et, In a planing machine, the combination of a side-head hanger comprising a supporting plate, a leg releasably secured thereto and depending therefrom, a bearing-yoke, an upright side-head spindle, said bearingyole comprising upper and lower bearings for said spindle, means for adjusting said bearing-yoke up and down on said leg for adjusting said bearing-yoke, bearings and spindle simultaneously up and down on said leg, and laterally extending guiding means on which said plate is laterally adjusted, and constructed and arranged for simultaneous removal of said leg, bearing-yoke, bearings and spindle during maintenance of guiding relation between said plate and guiding means.
5. In a planing machine, the combination of a frame, separated laterally extending guides therein, a side-head hanger with the upper portion of which each of said guides has guiding connection, a lower support for the edge of stock, and adjusting means located between said guides for adjustingsaid support up and down on said hanger.
G. In a planing machine, the combination of a frame, separated laterally extending guides therein, a side-head hanger comprising a supporting plate having guiding connections with said guides anda spindle-supporting leg depending from said plate, said plate having a depending apron at the side portion thereof located. between said guides, and a support for the edge of stock adjustable up and down on said apron.
7. In a planing machine, the combination. of a frame having separated laterally extending guides therein, a side-head hanger,
comprising a plate, a depending leg releasably secured to said plate, and bearings supported by said leg, an upright cutter-head spindle journaled in said bearings, said plate having guiding connections with said guides, a lower support for the edge of stock, adjusting means between said. support and plate located between said guides, and constructed and arranged for removal of said leg during maintenance of adjusted position of said lower support.
8. In a planing machine, the combination of a frame, separated laterally extending guides therein, a side-head hanger with the upper portion of which said guides have guiding connections, said side-head hanger comprising a plate and a depending cutterhead spindle-supporting leg releasably secured to said plate, a laterally adjustable side-guide for the stock above each of said laterally extending guides7 and a vertically adjustable bridge-support for the edge of stock extending between said side-guides and between said laterally extending guides.
