To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED B. LEMON, a citizenof the United.States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and Stateof Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Badges, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in the construction of an emblem, badge, charm or the like, and has for its object to provide such a badge or charm adapted to be attached to and used as a pendent on watch chains or neck chains 'or to be attached to rings, cuff buttons or other articles of jewelry to be used as an emblem or badge or charm, the device having an outline of the desired significance and having an opening through it preferably in the form of a symbolic arch and a wing or closure member being mounted on either one or both faces of the body portion of the emblem to be swung outwardly or moved to expose this opening, when desired.

lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fullydescribed, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings:

Figure 1 is a front view of the device showing the gate or closure member in closed position covering the opening through the body portion.

Figure 2 is the same as Figure 1 and showing one of the gate members as swung to open position exposing the arch permitting the symbol on the inner face of the opposite gate member to also be observed as though in the distance. I

In my improved construction-of badge or emblem I have provided a central openingl2 through the body portion threof, which opening is preferably in the form of a symbolic arch, but, the openingmay be made in any other desired shape, and on opposite sides of this body portion I have hung gates or closure members 10 and 11 on their respective hinges 13 and 14. to be swung into position to cover both entrances to the opening or theyamay-be raised to es:-

These wings or closure members are each adapted to carry symbols 15 and 17' respectively, on their outer faces and 16 and 18 on their respective inner faces if de sired, whereby when the gate 10 is raised into the position illustrated in Figure 2 the gate 11 being closed, the opening in the body is exposed and the symbol 16 on the inner face of gate 11 may be observed through the arch, the lifting of this gate also exposes the second flight of steps 19 leading to the arch thus producing the effect of the gateway of an ancient temple and on the wall at the farther end of which is observed a significant symbol 16, thus producing a very novel and attarctive effeet in an emblem of this character. In order that a variety of effects may be produced the significance of symbol 18 may be difl'erent from symbol 16 and so when gate 10 is closed and gate 11 is open the symbol on the inner face of this gate may be observed through the arch upon the distant wall of the temple in place of the one exposed when looking through from the opposite direction. I

The emblem is very handsome and attractive in appearance and. by providing an opening therethrough in combination with the swinging gates on the opposite sides thereof new and novel effects are produced all of which may be symbolic of the order to which the emblem applies.

I have shown and described the closure members or gates as being hinged above the opening but these gates may be arranged in any desired form and hung in any desired way to be moved into position to expose the arch or opening. I have also shown a gate as mounted on both sides of the body of the emblem, but a gate may be hung on but one side of the body if desired, to be moved to either expose or close the opening. a

The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resortingto all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.

I claim 1. A badge comprising a body having an 7 outline of the desired significance and having an unobstructed opening through it shaped to carry a significance different from that of the body, and a hinged closure plate mounted on opposite sides of said body adapted to be moved independently tovexpose said opening and permit an unobstructed View of the opening from either side of the body.

2. -A badge comprising a body having an outline of a certain significance and pro vided With an unobstructed opening through it, and a closure member for said opening mounted on each of the opposite sides of said body, each carrying a symbol on its inner face and each of said members being adapted to be moved independently of the other to expose said opening through which the symbol on the opposite member may be observed.
