DISPLAY BOX.
Application led February 1, 1922.
To all wlw/m t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANK E. ALLwoR'rH,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in display boxes.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved display box having a plurality of trays in which the bottom tray is automatically projected upon the opening of the cover so that the contents of all the trays are exposed.
A further object is to provide a display box having these advantages which is strong and durable, though simple and economical in structure, easy to operate, vand at the same time attractive and finished in appearance, it having the appearance when closed of an ordinary box.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The iniventiofn is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in thel accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, in which z Fig. I is a front perspective view of my improved display box.
Fig. II is a. vertical section from front to rear on a line corresponding to line 2 2 of Fig. IV.
Fig. III is a corresponding vertical sec tion corresponding to that of Fig. II, with the box open.
Fig. IV is a vertical longitudinal section on a line corresponding to the broken line 4 4 of Fig. II.
Fig. V is a detail horizontal sect-ion on a line corresponding to line 5 5 of Fig. IV.
In the drawing sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines and similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
I have, in the accompanying drawing, shown parts conventionally and I do not describe in detail the joints or connections for certain of the parts, as such joints or connections form no part of my present invention and will be readily understood by box makers.
Serial No. 533,378.
The body of my improved box comprises the bottom 1, rear wall 2 and end walls 3. The front 4 is hinged to the bottom at 5. The bottom is arranged to project at 6 to support the front wall in horizontal position. For the sake of appearance the bottom is made to uniformly project on all sides of the box. j
The cover 7 is provided with a {iange 8 adapted to close over the walls of the box and lwhen closed supports the front wall in its erected position. rlChe cover is hinged at the rear, as at 9. The box is provided with a` horizontal partition 10 forming superimposed tray compartments. The bottom tray 11 is slidably arranged in the bottom tray compartment while the upper ktray 12 rests on the partition 10.
The box cover is provided with an inner wall 18 spaced from the outer wall thereof and having holes 19 adjacent each end, the purpose of which will appear later. To automatically project the bottom tray upon the opening of the cover, IA provide operating cords 13. These cords are preferably a piece of tape, the ends of whichV are passed through the holes 19 in the inner wall 18 of the cover so that the bight of the tape lies between the inner land outer cover walls, thus providing a very secure connection for the tape to the cover. These cords are passed downwardly between the ends of the upper tray and the end walls of the box through holes 14 in the partition 10 and through holes 15 in the rear wall of the bottom tray, the ends being tied together at 16 on the inside of the tray as shown.
This forms a very secure connection for the tray to the parts and one which permits the operating cords to equalize or adjust themselves, so that the tray does not bind as it is projected, and also avoids the necessity of great care in assembling.
When the cover is closed the operating cords are draw downwardly as indicated in Fig. II. the slack portion thereof folds or lies within the cover, there .being no parts of the operating cords exposed to view from the outside of the box. When the cover is opened the front wall collapses as is shown in Fig. III and the bottom tray is projected, the cords, drawing through only one hole, slip freely therein so that the structure is not likely to become inoperative although repeatedly opened and closed.
My improved display box is very economical to-produce, is attractive in appearance and, as stated, is durable in use. lt is particularly designed by me for use as a confectionery box or package although desirable for use in other relations as a display box for merchandise.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by lietters Patent is:
l. The combination o'fa box body comprising bottom, rear and end walls, and a tront wall hinged at its lower edge with the bottoni projecting beyond the front wall to support it when it is collapsed, said box being provided with a horizontal partition providing superimposed tray compartments, said partition having` holes at its ends adjacent its front edge, a flanged cover provided with an inner wall having holes adjacent the ends thereo'l, said cover being hinged at the rear or' the box and adapted to support the 'front wall in closed position, trays 'tor said compartments, the bottom tray being slidable in the bottom compartment and having holes in its rear wall adjacent its ends, and a tape arranged with its bight between the cover walls and its endsithrough the openings in the inner wall and passed between the ends of the top tray andthe walls of the box and through said holes in said partition plate and said holes in the yrear wall of the bottom tray, the ends of the tape being connected so that when f the cover is opened the front wall collapses on the bottom and the bottom tray is projected over and supported by the collapsed front wall.
2. The combination of a box body comprising bottom, rear and end walls, and a front wall hinged at its loweredge with the bottom projecting beyond the front wall when in its collapsed position, said box being provided with a horizontal partition providing superimposed tray compartments, said partition having holes at its ends adjacent its front edge, a cover provided with an inner wall hat-*ing holes adjacent the ends thereof, said cover being hinged to the rear wall and adapted to support the front wall in closed position, trays for said compartments, the bottom tray being slidable in the bottoni compartment, and a tape passed through the openings in the inner wall of said cover with its bight portion between the walls and passed through said holes in said partition plate and secured to said tray in the-rear thereof so that when the cover is opened the front wall collapses on the bottom and the bottom tray is projected over and supported by the collapsed front wall.
3. rEhe combination o1 a box body provided with a front wall hinged at its lower edge and with a horizontal partition pro- 1iding superimposed tray compartments, said partition having holes at its ends, a hinged cover adapted to support the front wall, trays for said compartments, the bottom tray being slidable in the bottom compartinent and having holes in its rear wall adjacent its ends, and a tape secured to said cover and passed between the ends of the upper tray and the walls of the box body and through said holes in said partition Aplate and through the holes ot' the rear wall of said bottom tray providing an attachment thereto so that when the cover is opened the iront wall collapses and the bottom tray is projected over and supported by the collapsed front wall.
4t. rlhe combination oie a box provided with a front wall hinged at its lower edge, said box having a horizontal partition providing superimposed tray compartments, the partition having holes adjacent its ends, a hinged cover adapted to support the front wall in closed position when the box is closed, trays Yl'or said compartments, the bottom tray being slidable in the bottom conipartment, and tray operating` cords attached to the bottom tray at the rear thereof and to said cover, said operating cords being passed through the holes in said partition and between the ends of the upper tray and the ends of the box.
The combination 01" a box provided wit-h a jtront wall hinged at .its lower edge,- said box having a horizontal partition pro viding superimposed tray compartments, the partition having holes adjacent its ends, a hinged c ver, trays for said compartments. the bottom tray being slidable in the bottoni compartment, and tray operating` cords attached to the bottom tray at the rear thcreoi' and to said cover, said operating cords bcing passed through the holes in said partition'and between the ends of the upper tray and the ends of the box.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
