IMPROVEMENT IN CURRY-COMES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,033, dated November 26,1873; application filed June 17, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN W. TRUSSELL, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Curr -Combs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making part of my specification, in which I Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a transverse section.

The same letters are employed in all the figures in the designation of identical parts.

The body of the curry-comb is formed of a series of pieces of sheet metal. The section A, nearest the handle, is bent so as to form a trough with three sides, the edges being serrated. The plates from which the others, A, are formed are bent at right angles, as shown, and are serrated only upon the lower edges. The other edges are overlapped upon the angle of the section next in series, so as merely to have a bearing upon the upper surface along the plate and near the angle, as shown. Slots are cut through the plates immediately below the angles to receive the braces B, which are formed of strips of sheet metal, and the braces and teeth sections are connected by a series of rivets, O, passing through the sections, and through the braces, and their heads are drawn down in clinching the rivets, so as to compress the sections against the braces and draw the edges of the former firmly against the angles of the next section in series. The slots should be of the length of the width of the braces B, so as to take off the lateral strain from the rivets when the curry-comb is cleaned in the usual manner by striking with the points F, riveted at the corners, against a solid object. The handle D is attached to a triangular piece,

E, which is riveted to the sections, and serves as a brace to stiffen the curry-comb.

Curry-combs have beenmade of similarlybent,sections, but the top part of each section has been made to extend across the upper surface of the next section in the series, and secured to one another by rivets passing through both of the plates forming the back. Braces have also been employed on the backs of ourry-combs to stiffen them.

I do not claim curry-combs made with overlapping sections, broadly; but, by connecting the sections, as I do, I am enabled to reduce the quantity of metal required, and at the same time to make as good an article; nor do I claim, broadly, the use of braces. The feature of novelty introduced in this invention consists in passing it along the inner face of the back, through slots forming shoulders, to resist lateral strain.

That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A currycomb formed in sections A A, overlapping only enough to form a bearing at the angle of the next section in the series, and with braces B B, passing along the inner faces of the back through slots, and confined to the sections of the back by rivets, substantially in the manner as set forth.

2. A curry-comb constructed in sections A A, in which are slots to receive braces B B, passing along the back, to which they are secured by rivets, the ends of the slots forming shoulders to relieve the rivets from lateral strain, substantially as set forth.
