IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER-HANGERS BRUSHES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,999, dated November 25, 1873; application filed August 22, 1873.

Be it known that I, JoHN M. MoOoMB, of Lancaster, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Applying \Valllaper; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly broken away.

The invention relates to a novel construction of paper-hangers brushes, whereby they may be made to place the paper in proper position upon the wall. It consists in applying a hinged spring-pressed clamp to the top of the brush; also, in a novel mode of enabling the operator to open the clamp, after the paper has been located upon the wall, by a litter connected, by a cord or wire, with his hand. It also consists in providing the lifter with an extension-arm, and subjecting it to the action of a crooked lever, which holds the clamp open until the brush is taken down from the wall.

In the drawing, A represents the handle, and B the brush, of a paper-hanger. C is a hinged clamp, held down by the springs D. Under the clamp (J, and on the upper surface of the brush-stock, are placed corresponding rubber strips 1) 0, between which the paper is held. E is a lifter, having the upright stud e, to which is affixed a cord or wire, E, that extends through one'or more loops, F F, to the hand of the operator, and enables him to open the clamp against the pressure of springs D. The lifter E is also provided with an extension, 6, over which passes the hook g of a crooked lever; G, which is fulcrumed on'the handle in the loops H H, and has an end, g, against which the hand is pressed to cause the hook to release its hold upon the extension 6.

The operation is as follows: The upright handle is seized with the right hand near the brush, and the lifter-extension e pressed down, while, with the left hand, the operator inserts the paper between the rubber strips b c. The litter is then released, when the springs I) force the clamp down upon the paper, which is then placed upon the wall in the position desired. The wire or cord that extends along the handle is now pulled, the lifter and clamp raised, and the paper released.

The brush is preferably about nineteen inches long by two inches wide, and is provided with asuitable extension-handle, adjustable to different heights of ceiling. The lever-catch to hold the clamp up after the paper has been released is necessary to leave the brush-rubber free from sizing, as the top half of clamp comes in contact with the sized side of the paper.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The hinged spring-pressed clamp 0, applied to the top of a paper-hangers brush, as and for the purpose described.

2. The combination, with clamp O, of lifter E, having stud c, with cord or wire extending along the handle, as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination, with a litter having the extension 0, of the crooked lever Gr, hook g, fulcrunied at H H, and an end, g, extending below the handle, as and for the purpose specified.
