The construction is such that a resilient frictional action is had between the lower projecting part of thesleeve 12 and the flange 1 a in order to hold thebottom in place and in the adjusted angular position. The bottom 15 closes both compartments 9 and 10 but the central, compartment 10 is preferably also independently closed by the use of a cork or other stopper 16 having a pull cord 17 if desired. This independent stopper prevents the salt from the outer compartment getting into the central compartment upon inverting the receptacle, as when taking off the bottom 15.
The salt is apt to get from the outer com- \partlnent upon the bottom of the cork or stopper 16 through the inverted *Lshaped incisions or slots 18 made in the lower edge of the barrel 8 to receive a correspondingly formed projection or rib 19 extending diametrically across the central part of the bottom 15. This construction provides an interlock for rotating the barrel 8 upon rotation of the bottom 15, which is facilitated by milling or corrugating the flange 1a to permit a more positive grasp in the fingers.
A stop-finger-20 projects upwardly upon the flange 1a and is-disposed upon the outside surface of the bottom portion of the receptacle -1.
In the operation of the device, the receptacle is inverted and the bottom 15 lifted off whereupon salt for instance is loaded into i the annular compartment 9. The stopper 16 being drawn out, pepper or other suitable material may be placed in desired quantities in the central compartment 10. The stopper 16 and bottom 15 are thereupon replaced vand the receptacle righted. Nhen pepper is desired for instance, the bottom 15 freely shaken out of ment 10, while the plate 6 masks the is turned so that the finger 20 engages the stop lug 21. Referring now to Figs. 4: to 8, inclusive, a slightly different form of fastening for the bottom 15 is provided. which includes the continuation of the side wall of the receptacle downwardly and outwardly in a substantially horizontal direction toprovide a shoulder 23. This shoulder lies above a second similar shoulder 2 1 preferably made in the same piece of sheet metal and connected by folding at its outer edge with the upper shoulder 23. A further return of the metal'upon itself is made to provide a flange 25 placed below the intermediate shoulder 24.. In other words, as indicated in Fig. 8. the metal takes the form of an 8. As represented in Fig, 4, portions of the flange 25 are cut away as indicated at 26 and 27, to receive the flanges 28 and 29 of the bottom 15 shown in Fig. 5. After flanges 28 and 29 are inserted in the slots 26 and 27, the bottom 15 is given a quarter turn, thus bringing the flanges 28 and 29 into interlocking engagement with opposite unslotted portions of the receptacle flange 25. The interlocking engagement is shown in Fig. 6. The flange 29 of the bottom is shown in Fig. 5 to be provided with a cut-out portion 30 which also 32 to take against the intermediate shoulder 24 whereby to pry these spring metal ele-' 'ments apart to form a tight binding engagement of the receptacle flanges with the bottom 15 to avoid the loss of the salt or other material in the outer compartment 9.
According to this form of the invention the bottom is connected with the receptacle by securing registry of the bottom flanges 28 and 29. with the slots 26 and 27, the bottom being then forced down upon the inverted receptacle until the flanges 28 and 29 are in position upon rotation to engage beneath the unslotted portions of the receptacle flange 25. Upon turning the bottom or the receptacle quarter of a revolution, the flanges will be interlocked and inasmuch as the spring bead 31 snaps into the cut-away portion 30. casual rotation and disengagement of the bottom will be positively avoided. This form of the invention will be found to allow of a quick detachment and replacement of the bottom and in this way will facilitate the replenishing of the compartments, while at the same time forming a very effective barrier to the escape of the contents.
In connection with Figs. 9 and 10, there is shown a still further modified form in which the'receptacle is provided with a flange 33 which is set in from the plane of the side wall and has diametrically disposed bayonet slots 34 and 35 made therein to receive the pins 36 and 37 upon the flange 38 of the bottom 15. In this instance, as also in Fig. 6, the rib which looks the bottom with the barrel 8 is square in cross section 8 locking engagement result from the interfitting of these parts.
The bottom 15 shown in Fig. 10 is fitted with the flange 38 lying outwardly of the receptacle flange 33, care being taken to bring the pins 36 and 37 into a correct position to enter the bayonet- slots 34 and 35. The pins are pressed inwardly and the bottom 15 rotated to cause the pins to enter the diagonal portions of the slots and to lock the bottom tightly in place. It will be seen that the diagonal portions of the bayonet slots are elongated to permit of a fractional revolution of the bottom when opening and closing the ports of the pepper and salt compartment.
In Figs. 11 and 12 a modified form is shown whereby the cover of the central portion may be removed and pepper filled into the central portion after the cap is removed.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that the present invention provides a compact bottom construction for receptacles of this character in which the filling of the receptacle is had through the wider bottom portion, rendering the operation easier and which bottom portion also provides for the control of the two compartments. The construction thus simplifies the top of the receptacle and avoids the clogging of the operating parts or deterioration through the action of the salt.
I have illustrated and described preferredand satisfactory embodiments of my invention, but it is obvious that changes may be made therein within the spirit and scope thereof as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A salt and pepper shaker comprising a receptacle having separate compartments therein for the salt and pepper with individual outlets therefor at the top of the receptacle means to open and close the outlets, and a removable bottom for filling both compartments and being connected with said means whereby to open or close the out lets upon a shifting movement of the bottom.
2. A condiment holder comprising a receptacle having separate and distinct compartments therein with independent outlets at the upper portion of the receptacle, means to control the opening and closing of the outlets and arranged to open one outlet while closing the other, and a detachable bottom for the receptacle giving access to the like provided with a closed top with two sets of sifting perforations in communication with the compartments, means to control the opening and closing of the compartment perforations, a rotary detachable bottom on the receptacle connected to operate said control means, and stop means for the bottom.
4. A receptacle provided with compartments having outlets, means to control the outlets acting alternately, a rotary detachable bottom for the receptacle having connection to said means, and means to hold the bottom detachably and for partial rotation upon the receptacle.
5. A receptacle having a closed top with an outwardly offset central portion, the top and offset portion being provided with perforations, atube fitted in the receptacle and mounted for turning at its inner end in the offset portion, said tube having perforations to agree with the perforations in the offset portion, a ported plate carried by the tube to open and close the perforations in the top, and a bottom detachably held upon the receptacle and having an interlocking engagement with the tube.
6. A receptacle having compartments with outlets leading therefrom, a control means for the outlets, a detachable bottom for giving access to said compartments and means to independently close one compart ment at the bottom, said receptacle and detachable bottom having means acting on rotation to interlock the bottom with the receptacle, said detachable bottom having a detachable interlocking connection with said control means.
