JMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
Specifiea1ziou forming part of Letfiers Patent N0. 144,965, dated November 25, 1873 application filed September 2, 1873.
T0 all whom 1t may conce1n:
Be 111 known 1:11:11 I, Josnm1 W. DOUGLAS, of Middletown, in 13110 county of Middlesex and Stute of Conueeticut, 11211 e invented an Improvement 111 Pumps, 0f which the following is 21 specificz1t-ion:
Figures 1 und 2 21re side views 0f my improved pump. Figs. 3 2111d 4 211 0 sectional side views, showing modifications 0f the sty1e of braces used; und Fig. 5 is 21 side view 0f ehe clz1mp f0r 1101di-11g the brz1ce in position.

This invention 1121s f0r its object t0 dispense with 1110 hez1vy 111d cumbersome standards us'uz1lly employed 011 ordinary pumps 1'0r1101ding the sz1me 111 positiou 011 t-110 ground, 011 elevz1ted stands, 01" 111 sinks, W111011 standards require the use of vz1rious pz1tterns und 001 eboxes, &e., f01 east-ing t11e111, und cause the pumps to 110 111010 expensive und cu1nbersome fl12111 t11ey wou1d 110 without requiring such standards.
My invention consists 111 co1nbining, with 13110 pipe of an ordinz1ry pump, 2111 21dj ustz1ble s1eeve 01 c1amp, Which 0110 01 111010 braces 2110 fixed, 211111 which 02111 110 fz1stened 10 the said pipe bymeans of c1oss-elamps, 01 otherwise, so that t-110 pump mz1y, by tl1e braces, 110 stez1died y und properly supported. These braces 11121y 110 made extensible 01 111 single pieces, as de sired.
In Fig. 1 111 the accmnpu-nying druwing, the lette1 A represents t110 011211111101 of an 01- dina-ry pump, carrying 21 spout, (1, und 21 support for t110 handle B, C is fl1e pipe 0f t11e pump, extending dom1ward f10111 the 01121mher i11t-0 21 W011, 01 t0wz1rd the water-recep- 121010. Up0n 211111 a-r0und this pipe C is fitted 21 sleeve, D, W11i011 02111 110 fustened 10 15110 pipe at any suitab1e heightby means of 11 set-screw, e, 01 by 21 wedge, 01 0t11e1 suitz1ble dumping 01 fastening devices. The s1eeve constitutes 21 base 01 flange 0u t-l1e pipe, for supporting the s21111e und 1110 superstruucure 011 21 fmme, plz1tform, o1 sink, E. By making it z1djust-z1- ble 0n the pipe, 111 t11e 11121111101 indicz1ted, the pump 02111 110 set 211 suitable height. Around ehe pipe O, 111d above tl1e s1eeve 13,1's also fit= ted another s1eeve, F, W111011 02111 also 110 adjusted verticz1lly, 211111 fasteued by 21 setscrew, d, 01 its equivalent. T110 brace G is pivoted t0 projecting ez1rs of the s1eeve F, und extends down so t-11e supp0rting p1atform 01 p1ate E,
serviug, in cong'uncti0n with the s1eeve D, to proper1y hold t11e pump in position, 2111d t0 stez1dy the same during operation.
It will 110 observed. 1211211, by thus mz1king the supporting parts 0f tl1e pump 111 t11e form 0f z1djusoa-ble sleeves, 0r as parts thereof, the upper p01t1011 0f the pump 02111 be made much 1ig1'1t01 than is usually ehe case where the pump support ]121s to be cast together wit-h 12110 chamber A, und 21 sma-ller chamber is, therefore, permissible in the pump.
In Fig. l, the opelating-chamber 0f t11e pump is shown t0 110 suspended from t11e pipe C benes1th the p1atform E, so that O is, in this ez1se, 11013 1110 suction, but the intermediate, p1pe.
Fig. 2 represeuts 21 drive-we1l pump, provided also witl1 21 chz1mber, A, tl121t is supported 011 the pipe O. 011 this pipe is an ad justz1ble s1eeve, F, to whi0h 21 series 0f standards, G, 21re conuected. When tl1ere are tw0 01 more such standards G, the s1eeve D may dispensed with, 21s showu 111 Fig 2.
Instead 0f m21king the sleeve F 111 0110 single piece und slipping 11 over t-11e 011d 0f the pipe O, I m21y make 111 111 section und pply it 2110u11d tl1e pipe G 2113 e1ny desired position, 21m1 t11e11 clz1mp 111 by me21ns 0f c121u1ping-rings e, or otherwise.
The standards may be in siugle pieces, as shown 111 Figs. 1 und 2, 01 they m21y made extensible und contra-ctible, as shown- 111 Fig. 3, 2111d provided with pivoted feet 2113 their 10wer e11ds, a-s shown 111 13110 sz1me figure.
F1'g. 4 represents 2111 enlz1rged. side view 0f 13110 pipe O, 2111d 0f t11e appliz1nces shown 111 Fig. l. It Will be fu1ly understood without fu1t1101 deseription.
Fig. 5 shows 21 sleeve, F, when made 111 pieces,andz1pplied 2110u11d 1110 pipe O by means 0f sp1it rings 01 elumps e.
I prefer t0 use 1110 setscrew d, 01 its equiv 21101113, 011 such sp1it 01 sectional sleeve F, the sameas I use 011 t]1e sing1e s1eeve F.
I claim 21s my invention T110 0011111111210i011 0f 1110 s1eeve F, carrying the brace 01 staudz1rd G, With tl1e pipe 0 0f 11 pump, as specified.
I11 testimony whereof I hz1ve hereunto sigued my nz1me before owo subscribing witnesses this 8111 dz1y 0f July, 1873.
\Vitnesses: J OS. W. DOUGLAS.
