IMPROVEMENT IN TACK-HAMMERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,953, dated November 25, 1873 application tiled October 14, 1873.
y This invention is in the nature of an im-v provement in tack-hammers; and the invention consists in a tack-hammer constructed in the manner hereinafter described.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my invention, partly in section; Fig. 2, a rear-'end view of same; and Fig. 3, a side view, showing operation.
A represents a tack-hammer, made from any suitable metal. With the hammer a is formed a claw, b, and a tang, c. Pivoted at d is a claw, e, the lower side of said claw projecting and forming a fulcrum, f, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The tang c is inserted into a hole formed in the handle B, and in this way the hammer `and handle are secured together. Into the hole of the handle is also inserted a spring, g, which projects from the handle, and comes in contact with the under side of the fulcrumf.
My taekhammer being constructed substantially as above described, its operation is as follows: To extract a tack theretoi'ore driven, the space between the claws b and e is placed directly over the head of the tack, and, the hammer being` held in this position, the handle is bent slightly downward, bearing upon the fulcrum f, and this operation causes the head of the tack to be clinched between the fixed and movable jaws b and e, by reason of which it is readily drawn, the spring g, by its elasticity, throwing open the jaws after the tack is withdrawn.
A tack-hammer constructed and operated substantially as above described not only withdraws the tacks with great facility, but it withdraws them without bending them, so that they may be again driven, and without injury to the carpet.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described tack hammer and extractor, consisting of the hammer-head, the spring fulcrum-jaw, and stationary claw, the whole constructed to operate substantially as described, as a new article of manufacture.
