BOTTLE-CAP REMOVER.
Application filed March '7, 1922.
To @ZZ whom t may 01m-cera:
Be it known that I, LESLIE A. TYLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Salamanca, in the. county of Cattaraugus and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bottle-Cap Remover, oi which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvementsin bottle cap removers, particularly a device for removing the usual paste-board cap from milk bottles, an object of the invention being to provide a device of this character which will be entirely sanitary, which will be simple and practical in construction, eilicient in use and inexpensive to manufacture.
A still further object is to provide abottle cap remover which may be very easily operated and which will prove a great convenience to housewives.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists-in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangement-s of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a view in section through my improved bottle cap remover showing same in applied and operative position.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Referring in detail to the drawings, I have used the reference numeral l to designate a milk bottle and 2 represents the usual type of pasteboard bottle cap or stopper forced into the mouth of the bottle and serving as a closure therefor.
My improved cap remover includes a eircular plate 3 and a frame 4 rising from the plate. 'The plate is substantially the same size as the usual milk bottle cap and the frame 4c may be integral therewith, soldered thereto or otherwise suitably connected. A pointed plunger 5 is mounted in the frame l at an oblique angle to the plane of the plate 3. The upper intermediate portion of the frame l is provided with an opening 6. accommodating the intermediate portion of the plunger 5 and an obliquely extending opening 7 normally accommodating the lower pointed end of the plunger is provided in the plate 3.
A stop ring 8 fixed to the intermediate portion of the plunger is normally held in engagement with the frame by coiled ex Serial No. 541,699.
pansion spring 9 around the plunger between the ring and the plate 3. Movement of the plunger in the other direction against the action of the spring is limited by the engagement of a handle l0 with the frame 4f.
In operation the plate is placed upon the cap, the spring 9 normally holding the pointed end of the plunger in retracted position within the opening or passage 7. The handle 10 is pushed downwardly with the palm of the hand, causing the plunger 5 to pierce the bottle cap. While the plunger is vin this depressed position the operator uses the frame e as a handle, fulcruming the plate 3 on one of its edges so that the handle l0 moves in the direction of the arrow. By virtue of the engagement of the pointed end of the plunger with the cap as indicated in dotted lines in Figure l this fulcruming or lifting plate 8 will remove the cap from the bottle and as soon as the handle lO is released the plunger will spring back and the cap will be dropped from the plate.
The plunger and the opening through which it moves are inclined at angles of less than 90 degrees with respect to the fulcruming edge of the plate. By this arrangement, when the handle l0 is moved in the direction of the arrow, the pointed end of the plunger being in engagement with the cap, the plate will rock on its fulcrum edge and eii'ect removal of the cap from the bottle.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that I provide a cap removing device which may be very easily operated and very easily sterilized. It is to be understood, however, that while I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention numerous slight changes and alterations might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without de.- parting from the invention and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details set forth, b-ut shall consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims:
1 A bottle cap remover comprising a plate adapted .to engage a disc stopper of a closed receptacle and having an inclined opening therethrough, the length of said plate being coextensive with the diameter of the stopper, a frame carried by the plate and being provided with an inclinedv opening in alinement with the opening in the plate, and an inclined plunger mounted on the frame and plate and movable through said openings to pierce the stopper, said plunger being extended beyond the frame a distance, whereby the plate may be rocked on its edge remote from the plate opening to effect removal of' the stopper.
2. A stopper extractor comprising a circular plate adapted to engage a disc stopper and having an area coincident With the area or' the stopper, saidA stopper provided With an orifice adjacent to its periphery, a pointed plunger mounted on said plate in alinement with said orifice and inclined with respect to said plate, and a lever handle carried by said plunger, whereby said plunger may be forced through said orilice to pierce the stopper and rock the plate on its periphery as a fulcrum to effect removal oi' the stopper'.
3. A bottle cap remover comprising a circular plate adapted to engage a disc stopper, the area of the plate being coincident With the area of said stopper, said plate having an inclined opening therethrough. a frame carried by said `plate and provided With an inclined opening in alinement with the opening of the plate, and an inclined plunger mounted on the frame and plate and movable through said openings to pierce the stopper, said plunger extending beyond the tra-me a distance whereby the plate may be rocked on its edge, remote from its opening to effect the removal of the stopper.
4. A bottle cap remover comprising a plate adapted to engage a disc stopper held on an annular shoulder Within the neck of a bottle and having an inclined opening therethrough adjacent one end, the opposite end of said plate approximately extending to the periphery of said stopper and over the/aforesaid shoulder, and apointed plunger mounted on said plate and movable through said inclined opening in the plate, said plunger and the opening through which it moves being inclined at an angle of less than 9() degrees With respect to the end of the plate which extends over the shoulder of the bottle, said plunger extended beyond the plate a distance whereby the plate may be rocked on its edge remote from the plate opening as a fulcrum to effect removal of the stopper.
