To @ZZ 107mm t may concern: Be it known that I, ELLA TURNER, a citizen oi the United States, residing at (ihrcago, in the county of Cook and State of illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mangle Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to an attachment lor ironing machines and the like, the general object of the invention bein@ to pro vide means for protecting the ro ls ot the machines from the heated members when the rolls are stationary.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the device may be used for conserving heat while the apparatus is in use.
A still further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the device can be easily removed from the apparatus when desired.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, ref-` erence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a view showing the invention` in use upon a mangle with the parts in a position to protect the rolls.
Figure 2 is a similar view with the parts in a position at the rear of the rolls., as when the rolls are moving.
Figure 3 is an enlarged view of one of the plates.
Fi re 4 is a perspective view of the plate 7 an its supporting rod 6.
As soon as the heat has been turned on to the heating member of a mangle orsimilar machine power must be applied to the rolls in order to prevent the heat from injuring the rolls as it would if they were stationary and after the ironing has been finished the power must remain on until the heating member has become cool so that the rolls are being actuated for some time before and after the ironing operation. Thus considerable power is lost and the object of this invention is to save this power.
ln carrying out my invention I provide a paiiof plates l which are preferably of the shape shown and each of which consists of a base 2 which is adapted to be bolted to one end or' the machine, and the upright part 3 which is provided with the slot et which is of substantially inverted U-shape. .a notch 5 is formed in the upper wall of the slot at the top thereof. A rod 6 has its ends engaging the slots 4e, the rod being held in position by nuts or pins at the ends of the rods and the notches 5 are so formed as to permit these nuts or pins to pass through them' in order to permit removal of the rod when desired. A plate 7 is suspended from said rod, said plate being formed in part ot asbestos so as to be a non-conductor ot' heat.
Before igniting the burners oic the apparatus the plate is placed between the heating member and the roll, as shown in Figure l, so that the heat from the heating member will not affect the roll, while the same is stationary, to an extent to damage 'the saine. When the member is suiliciently hotand the ironing operation is to commence the plate is removed from between the members by shifting the rodI in its slots until said rod engages the other ends of the slots at the rear of the apparatus. lThe plate will then be in a position at the rear ot the rolls and until the ironing operation is to commence.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel `features of my invention will be readily apparent.
l desire it to be understood that l may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement ot the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is Y l. An attachment of the class described comprising a sheet of heat non-conducting material, supports for the same and means for permitting adjustment of the sheet within the supports, such means consisting of a pivot for the sheet and curved slots 1n the supports for `receiving the ends of the pivot.
2. An attachment of the class described comprising a pair of slotted supports, said slots beinl of inverted U-shape, a bar have ing its en s engaging said slots and a sheet pf non-conducting material carried by said ar. y3. An attachment of the class described comprising a pair of slotted supports, saidy slots being of inverted U-shape, a bar having its ends engaging said slots and a sheet of non-conducting materlal carried by said `bar and means for permitting' the bar to lits upper llvvall at its bight portion, a rod having its ends engaging said slots With projections at its ends for holding the rod in the Slot, said notches being large enough to permit the projections to pass through them and a plate of non-conducting mate- 15 alcammlbytherod In testimony whereof IaiX my signature.
ELLA TURNER.
