PATENT JOHN LANGLY JAMES, 015 CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA.
BABY BED.
Application filed June 15, 1922. Serial No. 568,588.
To all whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that I, JOHN L. JAMEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at .Charlotte, in the county of Mecklenburg and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Baby Bed, of which the following is a specification.
This invention aims to provide a crib which may be folded up readily into small compass, when not in use, novel means being provided for raising and lowering the bottom of the crib, and the crib being wheelmounted to the end that it may be rolled about readily, from place to place.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combina- 11011 and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being; understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanyiim drawings Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a device constructed in accordance with the inven tion; Figure 2 is a cross. section on the line of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a top plan wherein the crib is shown in folded condition: Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 1; Figure 5 is a section on the line of Figure 1; Figure 6 is a fragmental end view showing; the crib folded; Figure 7 is perspective view illustrating the mounting of the end member; and Figure 8 is tranmental end elevation showing the crib in the position depicted in Figure The crib forming the subject matter of this application includes a fixed side 1 carryinwardly projecting; posts 2 which may be considered as parts of the side 1, the side including: a bottom rail 3. The numeral 4 marks a fixed side which is approximately one half the height of the fixed side 1, the sine 4 being provided with inwardly proiecting posts 5 and including a bottom rail 6. the sides 4 and 1 being disposed in parallel relation. Ends 7 are supplied, and are onnected by hinges 8 with the posts 5 of the side 4. Hinges 9 are secured to the ends 7 and include tubular elements 10 mounted for reciprocation on guide rods 11 on the posts 2 of the side 1 and disposed parallel to the side 1. The device includes a foldable side section 12 connected by hinges 14 to the fixed side 4. I
Incidentally, it may be noted that the side 1, the side 4, the ends 7 and the clownwardly foldable section 12 may include panels of wire netting, indicated by the numeral 21.
The crib includes a vertically movable bottom 22. Flexible elements 23 are connected to the bottom 22 adjacent to the fixed side 1, and are seated detachably on guide sheaves 24 mounted to rotate on the posts 2 of the side 1. Flexible elements 25 are secured to the bottom 22 adjacent to the fixed side 4. The flexible elements 25 and I the flexible elements 23 are ro-ve over guide sheaves 26 carried by the posts 5 of the fixed side 4 and permanently assembled with the said guide sheaves 26. The flexible elements 25 and 23 are secured as indicated at 27 to the downwardly foldable side section 12 in spaced relation to the hinges: 14 whereby the said side section 12 is connected to the fixed side 4.
When the crib is set up for use, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the ends 7 are alined with the posts 2 and 5, the latches 17 are connected with the keepers 20, to keep the side section 12 from folding downwardly and outwardly, and the latches 15 are assembled with the keepers 19, to hold the ends 7 against swinging movement on the hinges 8. The bottom 22 is in the lowered position delineated in Figure 2.
The latches 17 may be disengaged from the keepers 20 and, thereupon, the section 12 may be swung downwardly into the dotted line position shown in Figure 2. When the section 12 is swung downwardly as aforesaid, the section acts as a lever, and draws upon the flexible elements 23 and 25, the flexible elementsriding over the sheaves 24 and 26, and raising the bottom 22 until the bottom is in horizontal alinement, approximately, with the upper edge of the fixed side L as depicted in dotted line in Figure 2. When the section 12 is swung downwardly the latches 17 which are pivoted to the said section, may be engaged with keepers 42 located on the posts 5 adjacent to the lower ends of the posts. Thus, the downwardly foldable section 12 and the bottom 22 willv be held in the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 2. When the bottom 22 is raised, it is obvious that an infantmay be removed readily from the bottom, it be ing unnecessary to reach downwardly into the crib, the work incident to handling the infant being decreased accordingly, and ll of the bedding being rendered readily accessible.
When the occasion for the use of the crib has passed, the latches 15 are cast ofi' from the keepers 19 and the ends 7 are swung inwardly, on their hinges 8, until the ends lie parallel to the side 1, as shown in Figure 3, the tubular elements 10 of the hinges 9. riding inwardly, toward each other, on the guiderods 11. The flexible elements 25 and 23 are detached from the sheaves 24: and the bottom 22 is stood up edgewise, as shown in Figure 3. The fixed side 1, on the one hand, and the side forming members 4:and 12 on the other hand, are moved toward each other, until the posts 5 and 2 abut, as shown in Figure 6, whereupon the latches 15 on the side 1 are engaged with the keepers 20 on the posts 5, as disclosed in Figure 6, the
crib then being held'in the compact and collapsed position disclosed in Figure 3.
VVha-t is claimed is 1. A crib comprising fixed sides; a downwardly foldable section hinged to one side;
ends hinged to one side; means for holding 'the ends releasably against movement;
means for mounting the ends slidably upon the other side; a movable bottom; and
tion, to secure a raising of the bottom when the section is folded downwardly.
2. A cri-b comprising fixed sides; a downwardlyfoldable section hinged to one side; ends hinged to one side; means for holding the ends releasably against movement; a guide carried by one side; means for mounting the ends hingedly and slidably on the guide; a movable bottom; and means for means for connecting the bottom to the sec-
