Description

April 25, 1933. BENSON 1,905,128
BABYS FOLDING CRIB Filed Dec. 18 1931 Patented Apr. 25, 1933 UNITED STATES PAMELIA I. BENSON, LONG, BEACH, GALII'ORNIA M BABY'S rornme Q Application filed December 18, 1931. SerialNo. 58L797.
My invention relates to a babys folding crib which can be folded into small compass and which also has the advantage of a good mattress, a top surrounding rail or member with a folding member between the mattress and said top, whereby a baby cannot get,
through the side or even drop toys or other articles through the sides or ends of the crib. I have also provided for ventilation through the sides and a folding top or shade member which can be adjusted very much as can the top of a carriage, and yet which will fold compactly with the crib sides and ends. I have also provided an improved type of folding side and end members whereby there is smoothness and strength and neatness, and without corners or ends to possibly injure the baby occupying the crib.
In order to explain my invention, I have illustrated the same on the accompanying sheet of drawing which I will now describe.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a crib embodying my invention, with a portion of the side broken away;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the body members in folded condition;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the complete crib and in a vertical plane, and showing the members in folded condition in light broken lines;
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view, vertically, taken on the line 44:, of Fig. 2, with the side covering member indicated and in folded condition with the top rail or member;
Figure 5 is an enlarged sectional view of a detail at line 55 of Fig. 3; and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary view indicating how the leg members can be made foldable where desired.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, my invention as here shown for descriptive purposes consists of two vertically spaced frame members, as 7 and 8, with vertical connecting bars, as 9, therebetween, and with cross bars, as 10, 10, between the opposite sides of the lowermost frame member 7, thus forming a box-like structure to receive a mattress M of substantially the same thickness as said body.
Pivotally connected at their ends to the side and end frame member portions L8, 8, are side loops or arches, 11, 11, and end loops or arches 12, 12, hingedly connected as indicated at 13, 13, in Fig. 3, said arches or loops being provided on the undersidesi of their top middle portions with two spaced lug members, as 14, to receive therebetween spring clips, as 15, secured to" a top'frame or rail member 16, whereby said top frame or rail member 16 is supported inits raised pos1t1on,'-whensaid loop or arch members are raised,-as indicated in Fig. 3. The said top rail member "16 isenclosed or covered by the upper edge of a canvass or other suitable fabric member 17, providedon'the oppositesides with an'open'portion filledin with" net or other: open structure, as' at 18. Thus when said top rail member 16 is raised and the loop orarch members 11, 11,- and 12, 12, are raised and pressed into the s ring holding clips 15,15, the canvass or abric covering 17 is. stretched or opened up and forms the surrounding side and end walls of the crib, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3. r At one'end of said crib, and pivotally secured to the top rail member 16, is a cover arch 19, to which, as'at'20, is a second arch 21, forming a folding top withcanvass covering 22, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3. a i I At the opposite sides of said crib, near the ends thereof, are secured fourshort sleeve or tubular members 23, 23, adapted to have inserted therein the four leg members24,
24, thus making it possible for legs-to be detached, when desired. 4 a
In Fig.6, I have also shown'how the leg members can be pivotally or hingedly attached to be folded, saidlegbeing designated 24, and hingedly connected at 25, with a thumb screw or other suitable fastening means; at 26, on the bottom frame member 7 whereby said leg can be swung up to the upper frame member 8, and heldby means of a spring clip 27. These connections would be made through suitable openings in the canvass covering, and it will be understood that various methods of connecting the legs can be used, as may be desired.
Thus I have shown and described a practical and simple folding crib for small children, and while but one embodiment thereof has been shown, I do not limit my invention 5 to the exact showing made for descriptive purposes, except as I may be limited by the hereto appended claims.
' I claim: i Y r 1. A folding crib having a body to receive a mattress, hinged sides and ends foldable inwardly upon said body, a surrounding top rail, a flexible and foldable covering attached at its upper edge to said top'r'all' and sufficient in extent to'form an enclosing wall above the mattress when said side and end membersare elevated, said sides and ends beings-designed to underlie and support said top railand' said covering in. their raised and operating positions.
2 2; Afolding. crib having a box-like body to receive a mattress fitting therein, side and ends arch members hingedly connected at I their. ends to-\ the top of saidbody and foldable inwardly. upon said mattress, a sur- 95 rounding top rail'member, a flexible and foldable side and end. wall memberattached at its upper edge to said top rail member, vwhereby said'toprai-l member can be closed down upon said body, and holding means between the tops of said foldable arch members and said top'rail member, whereby said arch members support saidtop rail member and said sides and ends in raised position.
7 3. In a folding; crib,-a mattress support,
sideand end arch members hingedly connected at their ends to said support to fold inwardly-upon amattress in said support,
a top rail member, a flexible fabric side and end wall member around said body and 40 attached at its upper edge to said top rail, and foldable to permit said top: rail to close down upon said body, said arch members being provided with means for attaching their upper ends to said top rail to support the same in raised position.
4. In a babys crib, a box-like body to receive and hold a mattress, said body being in thickness substantially the same as said mattress to be fitted therein, a toprail'memv5'0 vber corresponding in circumference to said body and adapted to be moved down upon said body, arch members hingedly connected tothetop edge of'said body to fold inwardly, a top rail of endless form adapted to be raised and supported upon the tops of said arch members when the latter are raised to upright positions, and foldable means between said top rail and the top of said boxlike body, to form a surroundingwall be- '60 tween said raised top rail and said body.
Signed at Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California, this 12th day of December,
' PAMELIA F.- BENSON.
