OFFICE. v
GEORGE SOOLTON, OF PHILADELPHIA. PENNSYLVANIA.
SAFETY LOCK.
Application filed March 8, 1922. Serial No. 542,064.
' "mg having vertical tumbler grooves the inner walls of which are arcuate or beveled at their ends and provided with parallel horizontal slots for the reception of a lock bolt and key, said slots intersecting the grooves,
lock bolt provided with a stop at each end and recesses for the reception of projections on the tumblers 1n the grooves, a key of unique construction for actuating the tumblers and a spring actuated sliding catch.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lock casing with key and bolt slots and tumbler grooves decreasing in depth toward their upper ends in which tumblers are slidably mounted said tumblers having "notches for the reception of a key and provided with projections for registration with recesses in a lock bolt.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which Fig. 1, is a front elevation of the look as applied to a door, the front cover and handle removed to show the interior construction and the key inserted ready to actuate the tumblers.
Fig. 2, is a section of the lock on the-line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3, is a front elevation of the lock removed from the door.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, 2 represents a door and 3 the door jamb which holds the keeper 4 to receive the projected end of the lock bolt. To some I suitable portion of the door is secured the.
lock casing 5 so that when said door is closed of the key and the said lock casing will be in theregion of the keeper 4 andin this casing are formed a plurality of vertical tumbler grooves the upper ends of which are decreased in depth so that the inner walls thereof are beveled or I arcuate,- as
zontal slots 7 and 8 the key slot and intersecting the grooves with one end of said slot 7 open for the reception other end closed so as to act as a barrier to limit the inward movement of said key and the slot 8 is for the reception of the lock bolt and passes entirely through the lock casing for the projection ofboth ends of the lock bolt and saidlock v bolt slot communicates with the lower ends of the grooves 6. In leach of the. tumbler I grooves 6 is located a tumbler 9 having beveled or arcuateupper end corresponding to the shape of the upper portion of said grooves anda projection 10 at its lower end toward one face and leaving a nitch 11 in the rear face. The projections 10 when the tumblers are inlocked positions as herein illustrated register with the recesses-12 inthe upper edge of the lock bolt 13 the formation of whlch produces-flanges 14 to register with the nitches in the tumblers.
The lockbolt 13 is provided with an enlargement 15 at each end so as to produce a shoulder 16 at each end thereof which act as stops and engage the sides'of the lock" casing to limit the movements of the lock bolt and thereby prevent its accidental displacement and also indicate by the sense of, feeling when said lock bolt is in a'position to permit opening tion which will allow the tumblers to drop into the recesses. v
Each of the tumblers has a notch 17 therein and the notches of all the tumblers align with a key slot 7 when said tumblers are in their locked positions or their'projections 10 are within the recesses 12 in the lock bolt thus permitting the insertion of the key 18 having a plurality of tangs l9 equaling the number of the tumblers and spaced the same distance apart as the tumblers in the look so as to engage the upper walls of the notches 17 in the tumblers while the spaces between said tangs register with the maof the door or that posi plainly shown in Fig.2, and in i this casing are also formed the parallel horiformer being'the terial of the lock casing between the tumbler grooves.
After the key 18 has been inserted in the lock, as shown in Fig. 1, it is .only necessary to raise said key which will move the tumblers 9 upward within their grooves a sufficient distance to disengage the projections 10 of said tumblers from the recesses 12 in the lock bolt to be'withd'rawn from the keeper 4 so that the door may be opened.
I'provide a handle which passes through a slot 21 in the lock cover 22 which is secured to the outer face of the lock easing by suitable fastening devices such as screws or their equivalent, the said handle having threaded connection with the lock bolt.
In the lower portion of the lock casing is formed a transverse channel 2% parallel with the slots 7 and 8 and this channel has a bridge 25 disposed across the same through which passes the guide stem 26v of the catch 27 slidably mounted in said channel and normally forced outward by a helical spring 28. In order to withdraw the catch 27 from the keeper 1 against the action of the spring 28 I providea knob 29 which is attached to the catch in any suitable manner and works within a suitable slot 30 in the lock cover 22 and in order to hold the catch .27 in a withdrawn position I provide a hook 31 or its equivalent pivoted to the lock casing to some suitable point as at 32 for engagement with the knob 29 when the catch is pulled.
Of course'I do not'wish to be limited to re is es the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is 2- 1. A lock comprising a casing having horizontal bolt and key slots and vertical tumbler grooves intersecting the key slot and communicating with the bolt slot, the upper ends of said grooves decreasing in depth, a lock bolt slidably mounted within the bolt slot and provided with an enlargement at each end to form stops for limiting the lengthwise movement thereof and also having recesses in its upper edge for alignment with the vertical grooves when the bolt is in its protracted position, tumblers located in said grooves each provided with a projection for registration with the recesses in the lock bolt and each having a notch adapted to align with the key slot whereby a key may the tumblers to disengage the projections from the recesses in the bolt, the upper ends of said tumblers being beveled from their lnner faces outward toward their 1 upper ends.
casing having vertical tumbler grooves decreasing in depth toward their upper ends and tumblers within said grooves, the up per ends of which are arcuate to correspond to the shape of the upper ends of said grooves. v
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature.
GEORGE SOOLTON.
