BILLBOARD-POSTING marina/Liam.
Application filed. October 3, 1921. Serial Nb. 505,074.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN A. SMrrH, a citizen of the United States, residing at W'oodward, in the county of Woodward and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Billboard- Posting Implements; and I do hereby cleclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make use the same.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the posting or'placing of signs or posters on billboards, when the posters or signs are in sheets as in the ordinary practice and particularly when each sign or poster consists of several strips of paper, some of which bear the advertisement while the other strips are plain and which strips must be unrolled as they are applied, and particularly the object is to provide a means for facilitating the posting of signs of this type when the wind is blowing and when it is difficult to perform the operation under ordinary conditions, as where the operator must depend upon his hands and the paste brush to hold the sheets in proper position.
Another object of this invention is the provision of an implement of the above stated character which will be simple, durable and efiicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the descrip- Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating the head and portion of the pole or handle of the device shown in Figure 1.
Posters are made up from sheets of paper bearing parts of the advertisement and which sheets are matched as they are applied and also strips of plain or unprinted paper are used to cover the portions of the billboard not covered by the sheets of paper bearing the advertisement.
To apply the strip of paper 19 that bears the advertisement to the board 14, a spindle 19? is provided on which the paper may be wound and one end of the spindle is passed through alined openings 21 formed in the side walls of a channel iron head 21 and the latter is secured to one side face of p a pole or handle 21. The spindle 19Pafter passing through the openings 21 rests on an angle iron bracket 22 secured to the pole or handle d'rectly below the head 21 and 1 which forms a rest orstop for said spindle. The head 21 is also provided with alined openings 22 that receive the spindle end 23 of a pressure roller 24. The sheet of paper 19 is coated with adhesive as it is fed off of the spindle 19 and the operator applies pressure to said sheet of paper by a slight tilting of the device to move the roller 24: towards the board.
It is to be understood that a strlpof unprinted paper or border when used may be applied to the bill board first or the strips of paper bearing the advertisement may be the first to be applied to the board, depending entirely on the wishes of the operator. When applying the printed strips of paper, the free end thereof may be unreeled for a short distance and attached to the bill board by adhesive before the further unreeling of the roll of paper is commenced. Then as the roll of paper is extended or moved parallel with the surface of the bill board, the paste is applied in rear thereof or following the same to adhesively attach the strip of paper to the bill board surface, the roller forcing the paper smoothly against the bill board.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will. be understood that minor changes in construction, combination, and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is i v 1. An apparatus for the purpose de scribed comprising a pole, a head secured to the pole and having pairs of openings, and a spindle and a roller mounted in said openings.
2. An apparatus for the purpose described comprising a pole, a head secured to the pole and "having openings, and a spindle and a; roller mounted in said openings.
3. An apparatus for the purpose described comprising a pole, a head secured to the pole and having openings, a pair of spindles extending through -the openings,
and a rest secured to the pole and engaged 10 by the spindles.
In testimony Whereofl affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
EDWIN A. SMITH.
