Winn- PERATED MILL.- I i j a 1 Application filed. August 11, 1921. Serial No. 491,468.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. RADER, a citizen of the United States of America residing at Columbia, in the county of Boone and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wind-Operated Mills of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a grain grinding mill which may be mounted upon a pump or lik support for operation by a windmill through the reciprocatory movement of the plunger rod of the windmill without interfering with the operation thereof as a means of actuating the pump, and incidentally to provide means for simultaneously or alternatively actuating a rock shaft for operating other machinery such as churns, washing machines and the like; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view of an apparatus embodying the inventionf Figure 2 is a side view of the same.
Figure 3 is a transverse section on the plane indicated by the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a detail view of the bracket by which the base ofthe grinding mill is supported on the pump stock.
Figure 5 is a detail vertical sectional view taken on th plane of the axis of the spindle of the grinding burr.v
Fig. 6 is a detail elevational View looking at the grinding face of the stationary burr.
The device is designed especially for use in connection with windmill actuated pumping mechanisms having for example a pump stock 10, pump rod 11 and windmill plunger 12 connected in any suitable manner to the pump rod for vertical reciprocatory movement by any suitable type of windmill (not shown), and consists essentially of a base 13 carrying the stationary and rotary burs 14 and 15, said base being attached to a bracket 16 which is bolted as at 17 at its upper end for the application and remof al of the former at will and a mounting of the same which adapts it to resist any strains that may be applied thereto in the operation of the mill through a connection between the windmill plunger and the rotary bur which connection is preferably effected through a pitman 21 mounted at its upper end upon a pivot pin 22 carried by a clamp 23 engaged with the plunger, and a crank arm 24 extending radially from the rotary bur and having a wrist pin 25 upon which the lower end of the pitman is fitted. Moreover the burs are so arranged and constructed as to provide for the grinding action thereof during the upward movement of the pitman or during the tensile strain upon the plunger so as to minimize the tendency to break or buckle the latter.
The relative adjustment of the grinding burs is effected by means of main and jamb nuts 26 and 27 threaded upon the spindle 28 which forms the axis of the rotary bur, and
a feed hopper 29 arranged in registration with a feed or inlet passage 30 serves to conduct the grain to the grinding surfaces of the burs while an outlet 31 operates as a discharge for the meal or ground product.
A regulating slide 32 is employed to control the feed and is adjustable by means of a set-screw 33 engaging a slot 34 therein.
The bracket 16 is also adapted to serve as a support for one end of a rock shaft 35 for which purpose it is provided with a bearing 36, while the other end of the shaft is supported by a standard 37, a crank arm 38 on said rock shaft being connected by a pitman 39 with a second wrist pin 40 on the clamp 23, and by means of such rock shaft other machines such as a churn, washing machine or the equivalent thereof may be actuated either selectively or at the same tim by means of cranks 41 and links 42 connected with clamps 43 for attachment to the said machines or the plungers thereof. Preferably suitable means foradjustment should be provided to permit of varying the strokes of the parts proportionately to the length of stroke of the wlndmill plunger so as to suit the dimensions and requirements of the machines which are being operated.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is 2- An attachment for a windmill actuated pump mechanism having a pump stock and a reciprocatory plunger, the same consistingof a base carrying a rotary element. armtowhichthelupper endefwthflbracket is which is operatively connected .with fithebolted,' ,the lower and of -thglbmckefiz bemg Windmill plunger, a bracket to whieh the iplteyided1yvith a swinging clamp for en- 10 base is secured and whichjs previded twith gagegnent with the gbody portion'of thestock,
