To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM M. VVIL IN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have, invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gang-Saw Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My inventio relates to gang-saw machines, and has for its object to provide means to coordinate the lead of the saws with the speed of the feed-rollers of the machine so that when said feed-rollers are caused to revolve more rapidly the lead of the saws will be increased and as the speed of the feed-rollers is decreased the lead of the saws will be decreased.
It is well. known that in machines of this character the saw sash must be moved forward against the incoming log during its downward movement, and during its upward movement said sash must recede away from the incoming log so as to permit the log to move into the machine for the next downward stroke of the saws. This lateral movement of the sash and saws is called a lead, and should be increased or diminished in proportion as the speed of the feedrolls and the incoming log thereon is increased or diminished.
The features of my invention are hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1, is an end view of a gang-saw machine embodying my invention.
Fig. 2, is a side view of the same.
Fig. 3, is a section on the line m00 in Fig. 2, showing the inside surface of one of the end frames with my invention thereon.
Fig. 4, is a vertical section of a saw-sash and guide-ways therefor, in diagrammatic form showing my invention embodied therewith, and showing the operation of the lead imparting mechanism in broken lines.
In these drawings A indicates the base frame, and A A indicate the end frames of a gang'saw machine, the upper ends of the end frames being connected by means of a top-plate or cornice A Secured to the inside surfaces of the end frames A are lower vertical sash-guides B B which are secured in a vertical position by Ineansof bolts 6 (see Fig. 4).
Above the guide-ways B B I 7 place a guide-way frame C on the inside surface of each of the end frames A, supporting them on pivot bolts C C so that the lower ends of said guide-frames can be swung'laterally on said pivotdoolts C. Pivoted in the end frames A A there is a transverse shaft D upon which I secure eccentrics D D, which are opposite each of the guide-way frames C C, and upon each of said eccentrics I place eccentric straps (Z (Z which are pro vided with ears (5 which ears are pivoted to the lower ends of said guideway frames C C so that by rocking the shaft D said eccentrics D will cause the lower ends of said guide-way frames to move laterally with relation to the end frames A of the machine.
Upon the base-frame A is a shaft E upon which are secured crank-disks E E to which are pivoted pitman E the upper ends of which are pivoted. in slides E E F and F indicate the lower and upper girders of a saw-sash, which are connected by means of side posts F Ft, The upper girder F is provided with stud-posts or horns f 7 which are pivoted in slides f which operate in the guide-frames C C, and the lower girder is provided with like studposts or horns f f which are preferably pivoted in the pitman E somewhat below the center of the pivots of said pitman 1n the slides E G G indicate lower feed-rolls which are driven by means of a bevel gear wheel G, and spur gears G in the usual manner. For driving the bevel gear wheel G there is a vertical shaft H which is vertically adjustable by means of a screw H and hand-wheel H On the lower portion of this shaft H there is a friction wheel J which contacts with a disk J secured upon the wrist-pin of the crank-disk E adjacent thereto. This feed mechanism is common in gang-saw machines of this character. Upon the screw H I place a swivel-head K, and upon the end of the shaft D I secure a crank-lever K (see Fig. 1) and I connect said crank-lever K and said. swivel head K by means of a link K Or by any other desirable means, so that as the hand wheel H is operated to raise or lower the friction wheel J to change the speed of the feed-rolls GG, the shaft D will thereby be caused to rock, which, through the eccentrics D D will cause the guide-frames C C to be in clined more or less, so that as the saw sash travels downward the upper end thereof will be moved forward toward the incoming log on the feed-rolls. G; the faster the log is traveling, the greater will be the incline of the guide-frame C and leads of the saws.
In Fig. -l L indicates the saws in the sash and the lead thereof is indicated by broken lines. While the incline of guideframes C controls the lateral movement or lead of the upper end of saws L, the lower girder F of the sash being pivoted on the pitman below the center of their pivots with slides receives a forward movement toward the incoming log during the downward stroke, and a backward movement from the log during the upward stroke, as indicated by broken lines in Fig. 4, so that the saws L when in operation have a whipsaw movement, which is highly desirable. M indicates a steam cylinder in which there is the usual piston (not shown) from which a piston-rod M extends and is suitably connected to the lower girder F of the saw sash by means of which the power to operate the machine, is derived; and on the shaft F there is a crank N from which pitman extends to a crank lever N on a rock-shaft N by means of which the inlet valve (not shown) of the steam cylinder M is operated. The several parts of the gang-saw machine and its motor are herein shown and described to explain the general operation of the machine, but my invention relates only to the means for producing the lateral or whip-saw movement of the sash and saws.
T ierefore having shown and described my invention and suitable mechanism for embodying the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is: r
1. In a machine of theclass described, upper guide-ways suspended upon fixed pivots, feed rolls, gear mechanism to cause said feed rolls to rotate, mechanism to in crease or decrease the speed of their rotation, and means to move the lower ends of said upper guide-ways toward the incoming timber as the rotation of said feed rolls increases in speed, substantially as set forth.
2. In a machine of the class described, upper guideways suspended from their ends by means of fixed pivots, lower guide-ways fixed in vertical position, a saw sash slidably mounted in said guide-ways, means to give vertical reciprocation to said saw sash, a friction disk, a friction wheel engaging said disk, feed rolls, gears operated by said friction wheel to cause said feed rolls to rotate, means to raise and lower said friction wheel, and means to cause the lower ends of said upper guide-ways to swing forward toward the timber, as said friction wheel is raisec, and backward as the same is lowered, sub stantially set forth.
3. In a machine of the class described, a base-plate, a crank-shaft mounted thereon, side frames, lower guide-ways fixed thereon, upper guide-ways pivoted at their upper ends on said side frames above said lower guide-ways, slides in said lower guide-ways, pitmen pivoted in said slides, slides in said upper guide-ways, a saw-sash pivoted on the slides in said upper guide-ways, and to said pitmen below the centers of theirpivots in the slides in said lower guide-ways, feed mechanism operated by said crank-shaft, means to adjust the speed of said feed mech anism, means controlled by said speed adjusting mechanism to move the lower encs of said upper guide-ways forward from a vertical line, whereby the lead of said saw sash will be coordinated with the speed of the feed mechanism, substantially as set forth.
