WILLIAM MATHI S, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEEL-BOOTS FOR HORSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,782; dated November 18,1873 application filed June 14, 1873.
- to fit into the hollow part between and below the quarters of the horses hoof, in combination with a plate serrated or formed with fine points or teeth on its inner side, attached on the front part to hold fast on the horses 1100f, whereby the heel boot is kept securely in its place.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure I represents a side view of a heel-boot, attached to a horses foot, embodying my invention. Fig. I I is a section of the same.
A represents a heel-boot, the back part, B,
.of which is made of two thicknesses of leather,
n n, with a steel or metal plate, m, between them, shaped in a suitable form to fit the quarters of the horses foot, and lined with felt, a, or any other suitable soft material. (See Fig. II.) The arrangement of the metal plate m between the two leathers n and n keeps this back part or cap always in shape, even if the leather should get soft and likely to come out of shape on account of water, moisture, or other causes. On the lower part of this cap B a lip or projecting tongue, E, is made, of such a size and shape as to fit into the hollow part between and below the quarters of the horses hoof. By the arrangement of this lip or tongue E the heel-boot is kept perfectly fast, and prevented fiom slipping upward out of its proper place. a a are the straps by which the boot is fastened around'the hoof. To these straps a a a plate, D, is fastened, in such a place that the said plate D will come to lie upon the front part of the hoof when the heelboot is fastened on. The inner side of this plate D is serrated or arranged with fine teeth, or the same may be made with any suitable rough surface, for the purpose of taking hold and holding fast to the hoof, and prevent thereby the heel=boot, when strapped and fastened to the hoof, from moving and shift= ing out of its proper place.
I prefer to give to this plate D as large a surface as possible, and shape the same to suit the form of the front of the hoof, and to make the serrated part or points far apart, to pre vent any damage to this part of the hoof.
I do not claim, broadly, a metallic stiffener in the back of heel-boots for horses; but.
I claim- 1. The downward-projecting lip or tongue E as the back of heel-boots for horses, in combination with a suitable metallic plate, m, between the lining and outer covering in the cap or after part B, and projecting lip E, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. In heel-boots for horses, the projecting lip or tongue E, to fit into the hollow between and below the quarters of a horses foot, in combination with a serrated plate, D,- attached at the front to the straps to a, substantially as and for the purposedesoribed.
