GEORGE W. MAOKEY AND GEORGE S. MACKEY, OF LATHROP, PA.
IMPROVEMENT m GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 144,7S0, dated November 18, 1873; application filed August 29, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, GEO. W. MACKEY and GEO. S. MAGKEY, of Lathrop, in the county of Susquehanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, referencebein g had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to gates having for its object to furnish a device simple in construction, convenient in use, and durable; and consists in the improved construction of the hinge, and its arrangement in relation to other parts of the device, as hereinafter more fully described.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a device embodying my invention, showing in dotted lines the position when open 5 and Fig. 2 represents a section of the same taken through line :20 a, Fig. 1.
a a represent two stationary posts, and c the side, and b the cross, bars of the gate, which are of any desired or convenient construction. Upon the ends of the bars 0 are attached weight-boxes d, pivoted at one end so as to swing open, in order that they may be filled with any weight desired. To the gate-posts a are attached a bracket, 2, pro- -vided with a bearing and upward-extending ears or lugs, 3, perforated to receive a pin, thus securing in position the journal c with head 1 in the bearing of the bracket. By this means the gate is securely held in position, but may be readily removed, when desired, by simply removing the pin in the ears of the bracket. The head 1 of the journal sets down into the bracket, having a bearing against the bracket on one side, and a bearing against the post a upon the other side, thus preventing any side motion of the gate, to which the same would otherwise be subjected in windy weather. I represents a pivoted latch hung inrthe bar 0, working in connection with the slotted catch 70, so that when the gate closes it will be automatically secured. When the gate is opened, the latch i, also pivoted in the bar 0, comes in contact with the catch iv, and the gate is held open.
In operation, to open the gate, raise the latch i and push the gate over, and the latch *6, coming in contact with the catch 70, holds the gate open. To close the gate, simply raise the latch if, and the weights and gate will of themselves swing closed and be secured.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the posts a and gate 1) c d, the journal 6 with head 1, and bracket 2 with ears or lugs 3, all constructed and arranged for operation, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
