To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, ANDREW J. Canvnn and Jns T. Bmsnsr citizens of the United States, residing at (fibion, in the county of Obion and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar Alarms, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide simple and efiicient means which may be readily applied to a door or window so that upon unauthorized opening of the closure an alarm will besounded to notify the occu pants of the room or the building of the intrusion. A further object of the inven' tion is to provide a device for the stated purpose which may be readily set in position to permit free opening and closing of the door or window during the day or at such times when the entrance of persons will be readily noted and which may be as readily set to sound the alarm at night or at other times, and a still further object of the invention is to provide a device which will not detract from the appearance of the door and which may be installed at a very low cost.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a door having our improved alarm applied thereto;

Figs. 2 and 3 are edge views showing different positions of the alarm.

In the drawings, the reference numeral 1 indicates a door of any desired or wellknown construction and 2 indicates the door frame in which the door is mounted. [n carrying out our invention, as illustrated, we mount a rock shaft 3 in suitable bearings 4 upon the door frame above the door and this rock shaft is provided at its ends with normally depending crank arms 5 and 6 and at an intermediate point with a crank arm 7 which normally projects forward from the door frame. The crank 5 is constructed with an eye 8 at its extremity in which is engaged the upper end of a setting rod 9 and the lower end of the said rod is formed into a hook 10 adapted to engage an 50 eye or other form of retainer 10' on the door frame. The crank 7 is in the form of an arch or bail and between the sides thereof We set in the door frame a push button or circuit closer 11. the said liutton or circuit closer being connected with n hell or other alarm 12 through an electric circuit,

as indicated conventionally in Fig. i. It will be readily understood that the hell or alarm may be located-at-any desired or convenient point in the room or building so that, when the circuit is closed, an alarm will be sounded at a point where it, is most apt to be clearly heard. A presser in the form of a leaf spring 13 is secured at its upper end on the door frame above the shaft 3 and has its free and constant! bean ing upon the end of the crank or bad 7.

1t isthought the operation of the device will be readily understood. When the device is-set for operation, the crank 6 will depend-over -the upper end-of the'door, as

clearly-shown in Fig. and theicrank or bail 7 will extend over and across the circuit closer 11 with the end of the presser 13 bearing upon the end of the said crank. The setting rod 9 will be released from the retainer 10 so that its lower end will be free and will not interfere with the rotation or rocking of the shaft 3. When thus arranged, opening of the door will cause the door to ride against the crank 6 and swing the same upwardly thereby rocking the shaft 3 and, of course, causing the crank 7 to turn upwardly from over the circuit closer. As soon as the crank 7 has cleared the dead center, the resiliency of the spring 13 will act upon the said crank so as to swing it close to the door frame, as shown in Fig. 3, and the free end of the spring will be thereby permitted to strike upon the projccting movable member of the circuit closer and force the same inwardly so as to close the circuit and sound the alarm in an obvious manner. If it be desired to permit free opening and closing of the door without sounding the alarm, the end of the setting rod 9 is engaged in the retainer 10 and the rocking of the shaft 3 will be thereby limited. hen the setting rod is thus restrained. as shown in Fig. 1. opening of the door will actuate the crank 6, as previously described, but the shaft 3 will be limited in its movement so that the crank 7 cannot swing close to the door frame and the presser 13 will be prevented from comin into contact with the movable member of the circuit closer and will be held in an inoperative position as shown in Fig. 2, The door may then be freely opened or closed without actuating the rock shaft, as will be readily understood.

It will be readily noted that our device is exceedipgly'sirnple in the constructionund arrangement of its parts and may be readily applied to any door at a very low cost. When set foru it will operate efficiently and an alariri wil Ii ositively be given when the door is opened.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as'new is:
