.FASTENIER` FOR BUTTNS, ETC.
t Application filed June 28,
To all 'wilma it may concer/n.:
Be it known that I, JULIA A.. ST. CLAIR,
citizen of the United States of America, re-` siding at San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and .State of Texas, have invented` certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Buttons,'Etc., of which the comprises a device for securing buttons and like articles, of the type that are secured lin position on cloth, leather, etc., by a wire staple so that the prongs of the staple are firmly anchored in position upon the inside of the fabric, and are covered by a protect` ing element. The protecting element is of such a nature as rto completely conceal, as well as to secure in position, the ends of the staple. Rubbing of other garments against H the staple ends and other injurious results will be thereby avoided by my invention.
The above and other important features of the inventionwill be better understood from the following description,.in connec tion with the accompanying drawings, and the novel features of the invention wlll be pointed out in the appended claims.
lin the drawings:
Fig. 1 represents the invention in plan view;
Fig. 2 illustrates the fastening device with the parts opened;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 8 3, Fig. 1;
Fig. i is a section on the line 4 4, Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a staple end bending tool;
Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6-6, Fig. 5; and
Fig. 7 is a plan view of the tool shown in Fig. 5.
The invention comprises two members 5, 6 which are adapted to clamp and enclose between them the ends of the staple which secures the button or other device to the fabric or goods.
Referring particularly to Fig. 2, the member 5, which may be constructed of sheet meta-l and of substantially the form shown, has its edge slightly turned or rolled, as shown at 10. Within this rolled edgev is a wire or strand?, having certain portions exposed by the slightly indented or recessed portions 20, the wire preferably being pro- 1922. Serial No. 571,390.
vided with a loop 8 so that it may beresiliently seated in the groove formed by the turned over edge 10.
The cover or top member of the fastening device is provided with a rolled extensionv 9, which encloses thewire 7 oppositeone of ythe recesses 20, thereby hinging the v"part 6 to part 5.
immediately opposite the hinge 9, thepart 6 is provided with a bent over snap fastener 11, which when the part is folded over upon the part 5, will snap over the wire '7 opposite the other recess 20, thereby securing the members together in as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4. y
The part 5 of the fastener is provided with two holes 12, 12 suitably spaced apart, and said part 5 is also provided with two struck-up tongues or keepers 14, 14:` which 75 are spaced beyond the holes 12, as illustrated in Fig. 2. These tongues are for the pur pose of retaining in bent over position the ends ofthe staple. i Y
Referring to Fig. 3, a buttomror similar device 1, is provided with the usual open ings through which thread or other fastening means is passed for securing the button to a garment, or the like. A staple 3 made of any suitable gage ofl wire, Yhas its two limbs passed through the openings in the button, thence through the cloth of the garment, fabric, or the like, and thence through similar openings in a washer 21, which lies Von the opposite side of the cloth from that The limbs of the occupied by the button. staple are then passed through the openings 12 of the fastener member 5. yThe tool 16, which may comprise apiece of metal bent along a longitudinal line, as shown, so as to form in cross section a V, is provided with a hole 18. lin the use of this tool, the same is guided along one of the staple ends 3L or 3b, until such end projectsthrough the hole 18. The tool 16 is then turned which 100 bends the staple end over at right angles so that the end will lie flat on the inner face of the member 5, said end then being placed beneath a tongue 14. The other end of the member is then bent over in the same manner and its end passed beneath the other tongue 14. rlfhe part 6 of the `fastener is then closed over Vthe part 5, the curved tongue 11 snapping over the wire 7, thus securing the two members together in their normal relation.
It will be seen that the ends of the staple closed position 7 O Will be securely maintained by the tongues 14 onthe y'face of the fastener member 5, and that when the part 6 is secured over the part 5 the staple ends Will be protected yand concealed and all danger of other portions of the garment catching in these ends will be prevented, as a smooth surface Will be presented by the part 6 vhich, together with the:l part 5 completely encloses the staple Tf desired", the member 6 maybe entirely separatev from the member 5, and in place oftthehinge 9 a second detachable 'snap as'tenerjlilre 11, could be employed. ""claifm "as my invention 1 1. In 'a device'of the class described, the combination of two members of sheet materi'alfoneof saidl members being provided oppositely arranged cut out portions, and a Wirerolled Within the edge of 'said member and extending across said portions,
y spaced apertures in said member'to receive 'the ends of' a staple which are arrangedto pass through apertures in a button and be vfolded overl upon said member, and a second member fhinged to Said Wire at one of the ont ont'portions of the ivrst-named member,
' vand ivith a snap fastener to engage said Wire opposite the other cut out portion of said member,V the; second member being arrange'dto' fold over upon the vtiret-named Y member to conceal the endsvoif' the Wire staple.'
