Be it known that I, WARREN :W. Gonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new; and
useful Improvements in Internal-Combustion Engines, ofwhich the following is a specification. More specifically, one-object-of'the invention is to provide a 'gasjenglneof the enclosed crank-case type, wherein the crank-case is provided with -arernovable side or cover' plate carryingthe-c'am-shaft and the driving mechanis'mfbf the lattergsaid driving mechanism being automatically engaged with and disengagedfrom thecrankpin of the engine shaft when-the detachable side of the crank-case is applied and removed. In the most complete and approved form of the invention herein illustrated this detachable side may also carry the governing mechanism of the engine throttle. Another object of the invention is to provide in the crank-case an improved oil pan through which the lower end of the connecting rod sweeps to distribute oil to the cylinder walls on the splash principle,- with a pump also located in the crank-case to maintain a'supply of oil to said pan, andapump-driving mechanism carried by said removable side of the crank-case and automatically registering with the oil-pump plunger when the removable side is Eapplied to the crank-case.

I claim- 1. In an internal combustion engine, the combination of a crank-chamber having an engine-shaft bearing in one side Wall thereof and a relatively large opening in the opposite side wall, an engine shaft mounted in said bearing, a crank-arm on said shaft, a crank-pin on said arm having a free end. a detachable cover-plate for said opening, and a cam-shaft and cam-shaft driving mechanism mounted on and removable as a unit with said cover-plate, said cam-shaft driving mechanism being antomatically engaged with and disengaged from the free end of said crank-pin as said cover-plate is applied to and removed from said opening.

In an internal combustion engine, the combination of a crank-chamber having an engineshaft bearing in one side Wall thereof and a relatively large opening in the opposite side well, an engine shaft mounted in said bearing, a crank-arm on said shaft, a crank-pin on said arm having a free end, a detachable cover-plate for said opening, and a cam-shaft and cam-shaftdriving mechanism mounted on and removable as a unit with said cover-plate, said cam-shaft driving mechanism including a peripherally notched rotatable element that is slidable into and out of driven engage- Inent with the free end of said crank-pin as said cover-plate is applied to and removed from said opening.

In an internal combustion engine. the combination of a crank-chamber having an engine-shaft bearing in one side wall thereof and a relatively large opening in the opposite side Wall, an engine shaft mounted in said bearing, a crank-arm on said shaft. a crank-pin on said arm having a free end, a detachable cover-plate for said opening, a cam-shaftjournaled in said cover-plate, a gear-shaft also journaled in said cover-plate. co-operating gears on the outer ends of said shafts respectively, a gear-case attached to the outer side of said cover-plate, and a disk on the inner end of said gear-shaft having an opening to receive the free end of said crank-pin under a relative sliding movement as said cover-plate is applied to said opening of the crank-chamber. said cover-plate, shafts, gears, gear-case and disk being removable as a unit from said crank-chamber.
6. In an internal combustion engine. the combination of a crank-chamber having an opening in one of its side Walls, an oil-pan mounted in said crank-chamber beneath and in the path of travel of the lower end of the piston-rod, a pump in said crank-chamber for supplying oil to said oil-pan, a detachable cover-plate for said opening, and operating mechanism for said pump mounted on the inner side of said cover plate and removable as a unit with the latter.
7. In an internal combustion engine. the combination of a crank-chamber having an opening in one of its side Walls, an oil-pan mounted in said crank-chamber beneath and in the path of travel of the lower end of the piston-rod, a pump in said crank-chamber for supplying oil to said oil-pan, a detachable cover-plate for said opening, and operating mechanism for said pump, includ ing a shaft, an eccentric on said shaft, and a rod driven by said eccentric and actuating the-plunger of said pump. all mounted on, and removable as a unit with, said coverplate.

In an internal ocmbustion en ine, the combination of a crank-chamber iaving an opening in one of its side walls, an oil-pan mounted in said crank-chamber beneath and in the path of travel of the lower end of the piston-rod, a pump in said crank-chamber for supplying 011 to said oilpan, a spring to actuate the plunger of said pump on its suction stroke, a detachable cm er-phte 0r Said openihg, Opel-siting inechanisln, includ ng a, reciprocating rod engaging the outerend of said pump p1un gel, mounted on and removable as a unit with said cover plate, a lzitc'h eng gin said plunger to hold the'same ret'ra'cte g 'ari p'efmib engagement of said plunger by said rod as said cidve'r-pl'aite is applied to said opening, and nleans carried by said mier-pl ate for disengaging said la'tch from said plunget after said rod has been engiiged with the latter.
