I The spindle is adapted for. receiving the winding core or cop 15 which. is preferably a conicaltube corresponding to the conical formation of the-spindle, and may be constructed of layers of fibrous material such as paper, wound one over another and cemented together to "form walls sufficiently stiff and rigic'l to support the convolutions of silk or other threads to be wound thereon. One of the purposes of the spindle C011- struction herein'described is to form automatically slits 16 in the end of a cop as the a same is placed inposition on the spindle as shown in Fig. 1, the purpose of such slits being'to receive'an'd hold the loose end of aball of thread wound on the cop. It will be obvious that this function is accomplished as the lower end of the cop is forced to seating position into the annular space 10 against the-cutting edges 7 and 7 of the knife disposed therein. The bottomof this space maybe utilized to limit the entry of the cop and consequently the depth of the slits, orthe depth may be regulated by contact of the inner surface of the cop against the conical surface ofthe spindle. It will also be seen that the lower end of the cop is protected by the shield, and that the spaced portions of the knifeblade penetrate and grip the lower end of the cop at its diametrically opposed walls to prevent rotation thereof on the spindle, while accidental contact with the knife edge on the part of the operator is effectually guarded against.

As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this inventionpould be made withoutv departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all vmatter contained in the above description orshown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrativeand not in a limiting sense. g

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A spindle for use in Winding textiles adapted to receive a cop, and means associated with said spindle for preparing said cop for gripping the end of a thread Wound thereon. I

2. A spindle for use in winding textiles provided with a shield for receiving the end of a cop, and means associated with said spindle for forming a. slit in said cop for gripping the end of a thread wound thereon.

3. A spindle for use'in winding textiles adapted to receive a cop, and a cutting olevice secured to said spindle for forming a slit in said cop thread wound thereon.

4. A spindle for use inflwinding textiles provided with a shield for receiving the end of a cop, and a cutting blade with an outwardly directed edge secured to said spindle for automatically slitting said cop when placed on 'said spindle thereby providing means to secure the loose end of a thread wound thereon. i
