T 0 all whom 'it 'may concern.' y
Be it known that I, F LoYD H. HATFIELD, a citizen of the Unitedv States, residing at Rawlins, in the county of Carbon and State of 'Wyoming, have invented new andruseful Improvements in Casing Connectors, ot which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to a Vdevice for connecting together two parts of' a well casing, the parts of which have become disconnected, so that the entirecasing canbe removed from the well.
By my invention the danger ol the walls of the well caving in after the upper section of the casing has been removed is eliminated, as both sections are removed together.
An object of the invention is to provide a device adapted to be lowered into the casing with spring pressed means "for forcing gripping members into engagement with the walls of the upper part 'of the casing, such means being automatically actuated when they reach the point of separation of the two parts of the casing. v
A further object ot' the invention is to provide means whereby the device can have a casing spear attached to its lower end and a cable socket attached to its upper end So that the device can be readily lowered into the casing.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described.VA illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in -the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will he had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which :h
Figure 1 is a sectional view showing my invention in use.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view oic the device itself.
Figure 3 is a. sectional view of the body of the device.
Figure 4 is a sectional view of the movable parts.
Figure 5 is a section Son line 5-5 of Figs ure 4i met; Y
i Figure Gris a section on line 646 Qt ig- Y ure 2." y Figure 7 is asection on line 7-.-7 ofy Figure 2.
'As shown inthesey views'the'device con-'-v sists'of a body A formed of the parts v, 1' and 2 screw threadedly connectedwgether;,and i the rod 3 ttlng in thebore 4 of the b o'dy and carrying thev keys 5 to which the lugs c and the slips? .are connected. Partflfot the body is provided 'with a tapered portion i f 8 which is'provided'with opposing flat walls 9,.each having a dove-,tailed recess 10 'therein. The slipsk 7 are'of segmental shape andy are slidably mounted upon said flat walls.
Each slip is provided with a dove tailedfprojectlon l1 which engages the dove-tailed groove 10. The tapered tions 16 on the lugs, said projections being f so formed as to permit rocking movement of the lugs upon the reducedends of the part Sis providedv with a -slot 12 in' whichthe key 5 works.
soy
key. The lower ends of the grooves'14`are deepened, as" at 17, to receive the extensionl 6 of the lugs, when said lugs are in inopera- ,V
tive position or in' lowered position. A`
spr-ing 18 is coiled'around the lower part of the rod 3 and bears againstthe lower lpart of the wall 4 in part 2 and against a shoulder or washer on the rod, this'spring tending to 'A :torce the rod upwardly, with they slips and vlugs at the upper partof theguides and/in operative position."v Thelowerend of the rod 3 is provided with a screw threaded socket 19 for receiving the screw threadedv i end of the draw rod 2O which is adapted to be inserted through the screw 'threaded socket 21 and the small lower end 22 of the bore 4 in part 2.
The socket 21 isadapted to receive the screw threaded end of the casing spear B which is provided'with the toothed vparts 23 for engaging the lower part of the casing., The upper end of part 1 of the `loody is pro'- 'vided with a screw' threaded extremity 24 a raaf/,132
for permitting it to be attached to the rope socket C so that the entire device can be lowered into the casing by means of a cable 25.
The lrod 3 with the spring thereon is inserted into thebore of part 2 and the parts l. and 2 are screwed together. The slips and lugs are then fitted into:` their guiding grooves and the keys are then driven into lace. the top of the device and the draw rod 20 is screwed into the rod 3 so that the spring canl he compressed sniiiciently to bring-the working partsto vthe position shown in Fin'ure ,A clamp ,is then placed around tlrelugs 6 to retain'th'emin this osition. The drawrodvis then removed and t e spear attached. The device is vthen lowered yinto the' casing andas'soo'n as the lugs enter the casing the clamp isr'emoved as said casing vwillhold the lngsjin 'the deep parts of their recesses'.v As soon as the lugsreach the space between thetwo' parts ot the,l casing which are/separated, as shown in Figure l, they Iare 'releasedto such anextent that the spring 'forces vthel Vrod 3 Vupwardly 'and this move ment"will force the'slips outwardly and upwardly so that they vwillv grip the upper part of the casing. This upward movement ot thelrod 3 is communicated tothe slips 7 by theley 5,'the tapered part S yacting to force the' slips outwardly. '-At the same time the casing spear attaches itselttothe lower portion of' the casing by the teeth 23 so that the two parts 'of the casing are connected to'- gether. The casing canthen be removed as a whole in 'the ordinary way.
At present -the casing spear is the onlj,v Itool used 'for removing casing after it has vbeen parted. In order to use this tool it is necessary for the top part of the casing to heremoved from the well before any attempt is ina-det@v remove thehott-o'm-part. hen the ftoppar't of' the casing is removed the walls'of the well frequentlyfca've to the extcntfthat is necessary to drill out these cavings before-'the lfiottompart'oi the casing is available, and a great deal ot delav is often occasioned', and frequently this resiilts in the abaiifdoninent of wells.
The draw rod 'is Vused tor moving the .parts intoY their contracted position so Y that the device can lbejloxv/e'red into the casing.
The rope socket is then screwed to- It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel featuresl of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of theseveral parts7 provided that such changes Jfall within the scope ot'the appended claims.
What I claim is l. i device for connecting together two parts of a casing comprising a body having a, tapered portionv and recesses therein, toothed slips engaging the tapered portion, lugs engaging the' recesses, spring pressed means tor forcing the 'slips and lugs npwardly and outwardly,V suchA means being held in contracted position by` the'lugs being held in their recesses by thev upper part 'ot the casingT until the point'o'f separation is reached when the lugs will be tree to permit the spring means to actuate the slips.
2. A device ot the class described comprising a body having' a tapered portionand a recessed portion, a rod movably mounted in the body7 toothed slipsengaging the tapered portion, lugs engaging Athe recessed part, keys connecting the slips and lugs with the rod, a spring for forcing therod upwardly to move the slips into engagement with the upper part of the casingT said lugs holding the parts in contracted position when in en'- Igagement with the upper part of the casing but freeing the parts when the point of separation is reached and means for connecting,r the device with the lower part oit the casing.
3. fr device of the class described comprising a body having a tapered'parthaving a slot and `groove therein. and another part having a slot and grooves ending in recesses said body having an interior borel` a rod longitudinallyY Amovable in said bore,' toothed slips engaging the grooves in the tapered para lugs engaging the grooves in the other part. keys passingvv tl'irougli' the slots for connectin'g the lugs and slips with the rod, a springon said rod i'or pressing `the same into its upper position to expand the slips. said keys holding the vparts in contracted position by being held in the recesses by thel upper part of the casing and a toothed spear connected with the lower part of the device.
In testimony whereof I my signature.
