Description

1. M. unPuT. Draw-Barn DraftlEqualizrs for Waguns No 1441694" l Patented Nnv."1,1aza:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. ORPUT, OF MALTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO HENRY SAFFORD, OF SOUTH GROVE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRAWj-BARS IN DRAFT-EQUALIZERS FOR WAGONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,694, dated November 18, 1873; application filed April 28, 1873.
following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip-r tion thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My present invention isparticularly intended `as an improvement upon the draft-equalizer for which Letters Patent N o. 132,725 were granted to L. Kendlle, G. Gates, and myself, November 5, 1872; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the draft-bar, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and which represents a perspective view of my improved draw-bar.
A represents the draw-bar, formed with an inclined arm, B, on each side, at the front, and extending backward for a suitable distance. These arms B B are inclined sufficient to clear the tongue, and have holes a for the attachment of the draw-chains. In each end of the bar A is a slot, b, through which common bolts are to pass to fasten through the tongue, al-
lowing the bar to play back and forth, doing away with the rods b, and eyebolts 2, and the slot in the tongue, as described in the patent above referred to. d represents a swell made at or near the center of the bar A, upon which the double-tree rests to keep it from swinging or tilting. At the rear end of the bar A is made a notch or slot to admit of the doubletree hammer-strap D, said notch or slot forming two arms, c e, slightly curved on the under side to admit of arms f f, which are cast on either side of the rear end of the hammer-strap D, thus forming a lock-hinge.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The draw-bar A, having the arms B, slots 'b, and swell d, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
42. The curved arms c e, formed on the rear end of the draw-bar A, in combination with the arms or T-head f, formed ou the rear end of the hammer-strap D, as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of April, 1873.
JAMES M. ORPUT.
In presence of J. R. WELLS, W. A. MCCLUR.
