ADVERTISING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that l, Nun TVINKLER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Albans, in the county of Kanawha, in the State of West Virginia have invented certain new and useful in 'ovements in Advertising Devices of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to advertising devices especially adapted for use in store fronts and the like. v

An important object of this invention is to provide an advertising device having oppositely movable belts upon which figures are mounted to represent an endless line of purchasers entering astore and a similar line leaving the store laden with bundles.

A further object is to provide an advertising device having novel means whereby a plurality of display cards are separably exposed to view. Further the invention forming the subject matter of this application aims to provide a display device of the character spec fied which is of highly simplified construction, attractive in appearance and cheap to manufacture.

In'the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 geuerally designates a casing which may be arranged in the show case at the front of the store or in any other convenient or des1rable place. As illustrated in Figure 1 the casing 5 consists of upstanding side walls 6. bottom 7, a top 8 and a front wall 9,

which affords access to several of the movable parts of the device.

As illustrated in Figures 4 and 5 a main drive shaft 12 is arranged in the lower portion of the casing and is supported by the bearing 13 secured to the back of the casing and is rotatably extended through the front wall 9. A drive pulley 1a is keyed or otherwise secured to the main drive shaft 12 and has connection with an electric motor 15 by means of an endless belt or drive pulley 16. If desired a clock mechanism may be employed in lieu of the electric motor 15, for driving the shaft.

The drive shaft 12 is extended out through the front of the casing and supports a disk 18 from which a plurality of pins 19 or the like extend. Suitable display cards 20 are suspended from the pins 19 by means of attaching wires 21', the said attaching wires 21 being loosely connected to the pins 19 so that the display cards 20 which may bear advertising matter are always located beneath the pins 19. Display devices of any desired type may be employed in lieu of the display cards 20 and as the display cards move continuously, they will attract the attentionof those passing the display device. The display disk 18 may be secured on the shaft 12 by any suitable means and is arranged exteriorly of the casing to be within the view at all times.

lVi th reference to Figures d and 5 it will be observed that a plurality of vertically movable display cards 22 are arranged within the casing and when elevated appear directly behind the glass 23 in the front doorlO of the casing so that the cards are individually viewed through the glass. Each card 22 is mounted on the upper end of a. vertically movable rod 24 slidable through upper and lower guides 25 of any suitable type. The upper end of each rod or card supporting member is provided with a transverse slot to detachably receive the card whereby the card may be readily changed when desired.

The several vertically movable card supporting members 24 are actuated by means o'f'cams 28 having hubs 29 keyed or otherwise secured to the shaft 12 so that the several cams 28 will be caused to rotate with the shaft. The cams 28 correspond in number to the card operating members 24: and engage the lower ends of the same so that when the shaft is rotated in a clockwise direction the rounded outer edges of the cams will be presented to the rods 2- for elevating the same. As each cam reaches the limit of its upward movement, the flat end 33 of the same is in engagement with the lower end of the adjacentr d 24L so that the exposed cards 22 remain in its elevated position for approximately 10 or 15 seconds and when the flattened outer end 83 of the cam moves beyond the lower end of the rod 21, the lower end of the rod willmove downwardly into engagemei it with the straight edge 34; of the cam. As the cam continues to rotate the lower end of the rod engages the hub 29 and the rounded outer edge 30 of the cam again comes into contact with the rod as the rounded outer edge of the cam is in the arc of the same circle as the hub. It is thus seen that the several cams 28 which are arranged in spaced relation on the shaft serve as an ellicient and reliable means for separately exposing the dis-play cards 22. The cam-s 28 are maintained in spaced relation by hubs 29 or bymeans of other spacing devices, such as washers.

The improved displaydevice is also profvided with means whereby a stream of people are seen to be entering the store and a second stream of people who are seen to be leaving the store ladened with bundles. This feature of the invention consists of an endless belt having a plurali't-yof figures'tl secured thereto in any suitable manner and representing people entering -the s tore with a view of making purchases.- Therefore the figures are not provided with parcels or bundles but are preferably empty handed. As illustrated clearly in Figures 1 and 2 a second endless belt 43 is arranged at one side of the endless belt 4Q and is provided with a plurality of spaced figures i l representing people leaving the store ladened with pur chases made in thestore, all of which is intended to advertise. the popularity of a partieular store and to attract the attention of passers-by. The two endless streams of people or figures representing the people pass by a sight opening 48 in the door 10 and may bereadily seen by the passers-by.

Each endless belt is supported by a pulley 49 and by a second pulley50. It is important to note ,that'each pulley 49 is keyed or otherwise secured to a shaft while each pulley 50 is loosely mounted or rotatably mounted on the other shaft 52. It is thus seen that each shaft hasrigid connection with one pulley 4:9 andjloosely supports one pulley 50.

The drivesha-ft 52 for each end-lessbelt rotates in opposite directions so that the endless belts are caused to be moved in opposite directions. 7 1

One of the streams of people is therefore sprocket chain 59 is trainedabout a sprocket v 7 wheel '60 secured in any suitable manner onthe shaft 12.

Referring again to the drive belt it will be seen that one of the belts is twisted so that the two pulley supporting shafts rotate in opposite directions. f

At one end of the sight opening i8 a miniature store is provided and thefigures ll are seen to enter the store while the figures 4A- are seen to leave the store A suitable glass is provided in the sight opening 4 8 and any desired number of figures may be made to. appear in the sight opening ata given time. V

In operation the motor 15 is started so that the shaft 12 is operated. This causes 7 so that the same people are seen to leave: the

store as enters the store. However, those people who are seen to enter the store will be ladened with bundles when leaving the ioo store, all of which indicates the rapidity with which the people are served while; in g the store. 7, i.

It is to be understood that the form of the invention illustrated and described is to be taken merely as the preferred example'of the same and that such minor changes in an rangement and construction of parts may be made as will remain within the spirit of the invention. and the scope of what is claimed.

Having has described the invention what I claim 1s 1. A display device'consisting ofga. shaft.

a plurality of cams having hubs mounted on said shaft and constituting spacing devices for the cams, said cams being provided with straight and curved edges, the outer ends of said cams between said straight and curved edges being flattened, and article supporting means engaged with said cams and operated thereby, the flattened outer ends of said cams forming a means to hold the article supporting means temporarily in an elevated position.

2. A display device consisting of a shaft, a plurality of cams connected to said shaft and provided with straight and curved edges, the outer ends of said cams between said straight and curved edges being flattened, and article supporting members engaged with said cams and operated thereby, the flattened outer ends of said cams forming a means to hold the article supporting member temporarily in an elevated position, said cams being extended in different directions from said shaft whereby the article supporting members are separately elevated.

3. A display device consisting of a shaft, a plurality of cams having hubs mounted on said shaft and constituting spacing devices for the cams, said cams being provided with straight and curved edges, the outer ends of said cams between said straight and curved edges being flattened, article supporting members engaged with said cams and operated thereby, the flattened outer ends of said cams forming a means to hold the article supporting member temporarily in an elevated position, and a casing having a sight opening through which the article carried by said supporting members may be seen.

A display device comprising a casing having a sight opening, a shaft carried by said casing, a plurality of cams mounted on said shaft and extending in different directions from the same, vertically movable rods having their lower ends engaged with said cams whereby the rods are separately and independentlv elevated by said cams, and cards carried by said rods and movable to a position behind said sight opening.

5. A display device comprising a casing having a sight opening, a shaft carried by said casing, a plurality of cams mounted on said shaft and extending in different directions from the same, vertically movable rods having their lower ends engaged with said cams whereby the rods are separately and independently elevated by said cams, cards carried by said rods and movable to a position behind said sight opening, said cams being provided with straight and curved edges, the outer ends of the cams being flattened whereby to temporarily hold the cards in an elevated position.
