Disxnv a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New- York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxfitaying li/iachines, and T do; hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact desoription of the invention, such as willen- -ableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to improvements in box staying machines, such as are employed for applying and pasting stays over the corners of boxes.
The object of the invention is the provision of a novel and improved safety device which will prevent the pressure head or die from being forcibly moved against the anvil when the operators fingers are in position on the anvil, such as when placing the box thereon,- thereby avoiding the crushing of the fingers should "the machine be started too soon when placing the box on the anvil.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the descrip tion proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts hereina'fter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within'the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein 'Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the improved machine.

The working parts are carried by a suit able stand or frame 1, in which an anvil 2 is mounted, for sliding adjustment to accommodate boxes of different sizes. This anvil is adapted to receive the box 3, with one corner of the box fitted over the anvil, to receive the stay a thereon. This stay 1 is i of the box by a pressure head or die 5, which embodies the elongated body 6 of inverted V-shaped section to fit over the anvil and corner of the box.
In the present machine, the head or die 5 is carried by the lower end of a vertical slide 7 slidably engaging a. main slide 8 guided for vertical sliding movement in the frame. The slide 8 is reciprocated ver- Serial No, 349,243.
tic-ally by means of a drive shaft9 mounted in the frame, a connecting rod or link 10 connecting the slide Sand an eccentric or crank 10 of the shaft. A drive wheel ll is mounted on, the shaft 9 and acl utch 12 is used for connecting said wheel andsl aft, whereby the operator may start jandlstop the machine at will. Thus, a clutchlever. 11% which operates the clutch is, connected by a rod. 14. with a treadle 15 to be depressed by, the foot for throwing in theclutch to start, the machine.
The main slide Sand secondary slide? are employed, with an automatic, latchy between them, whereby to provide a safetydevice, so that thepressure head ordie 5 will only be moved downwardly against the anvil when the way is clear, whereas if the opei'atoi"s-ti1igers shonldbe caught under the head or die on the anvil, as when placing the box thereon, the pressure of the shaft 9 will not be applied to the head or die, thus avoiding thevcrushing of the, fingers. The latch includes a. latch. lever 16 carried. by a pin 17. secured within, the slide 8, sothat said latch lever willmove with the main slide, and a pair of latch pins 18 are slidable in the slide 8 and are pivotally connected to the lever 16 at opposite sides thereof. A cam 19 on. the end of the shaft-9 is operable to swing the lever 16 toward the slide 7 for projecting the latch pins 18, and a springQO retracts the pins 18 slide 7. A slide-7 has sockets 21 for snugly receiving the pins .18 and below said sockets has slots or grooves 22 for also receivsaid pins and permitting of vertical movement of said pins with respect to the slide 7. Coiled wire retractile springs 23 are connected to the lower ends of the slides 7 and 8, whereby to yieldingly raise the slide 7 with the slide 8, and pins or stops 2% carried by the slide 8 serve to, raise the slide (with the slide 8 when the slide 8 reaches its uppermost position.

The slide .7 will gravitate with the slide 8, and if the downward movement of the head or die is unobstructed, then the slide 7 will continue its downward movement with the" sockets 21 remaining in registration with the pins 18, the slide 7 resting'onthe'pins 2d; The cam 19 will then swing the lever 16 toward the slide 7, thereby projecting the pins 18 into the sockets 21 and thereby latching the slides together, so that the die'5 will now be positively moved with the slide 8, to bring the pressure to bear on the diei" The pressure head or die therefore" to'rcibly moves downwardly and then raises up again,completing the cycle of operation, the pins 18 being withdrawn" from the slide 7 when the slide 8 is raised; Should it happen that the machine is started too quickly by the operator, when the operators fingers are still on the anvil in placing-thebox' hereon, the head or die in moving downwardly with the slide 8 will come to rest on the iingers,'thereby stopping'the further-downward movement of the slide 7, whereas the slide 8 continues to move on down. The arrested movement of the slide '7- will therefore result in the'pins ing the'e'mergency, toiavoid' the crushing oi 18 moving downwardly below the sockets 21', so that when said pins are projected by the cam 19, they will enter the slots 22 instead of the sockets 21. The pins 18 will therefore merely slide downwardly and then upwardly in the slots 22 as the slide 8 -continues its downward and then completes its upward movement The head or die is therefore disconnected from the power;clurthe operatorsfingers, and the slide 7 will again be raised slightly with thc'slide 8 when the operation is completed, thereby lifting the'die off of the fingers so that they-can be withdrawn without injury.

In a machine of the character described, driving means, a. reciprocating slide driven by said means, a work performing slide, spring means between the slides for retracting the work performing slide with the reciprocating slide, a normally retracted latch carried by one slide, the other slide having a socket tor receiving said latch when projected for advancing the Work performing slide with the reciprocating slide and the slide which has the socket being formed for the free movement of said latch when projected so as not to enter the socket, and means driven by said driving means for projecting the latch during the advance movement of the reciprocating slide.
