Be it known that I, AN'rHoN ZELAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Turners Falls, coi'lnty of Franklin, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extensible Picture Frames, of which the 'following` is a speciiication.
This invention relates to improvements in picture fra-nies, and it is the primary object of the invention to provide a picture iframe oi simple, .inexpensive construction, which may be readily adjusted to receive pictures oi? diierent sizes in an effective manner.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a picture frame ot this character which does not require particular 'mechanical skill for its adjustment to hold pictures oit varying sizes.
These and other objects andadvantages of my invention will be set forth at length in the following description, and will then be pointed out specifically in the appended claim.
ln the accompanying drawing, illustrating a preferred form of my device, and forming;- a material part of this disclosure:
Figure 1 is af rear view of an assembled trame constructed according to the present invention, on an enlarged scale. y
Figure Q is a front view thereof.
Figures 8, 4i and 5 are detail iront, end and side elevations of elements used to construct the frame according to the present invention,
and
Figure 6 is a side and end elevation oiZ one of the corner pieces used in the construction of the novel trame. i
The ourcorner pieces employed in the construction of the iframe are identical in their construction, and it will therefore be suicient to describe one, illustrated in Figure 6, in order to maire the construction clear. i y
The corner pieces 1,2, 3 and i comprise each a pair of blocks 5 and 6 united at their meeting edges to form the mitre joint 7 an d having each an inner groove 8, and lengt tudinal slots 9 in their rear faces.
Into the grooves 8 of the blocks 5, the obliquely which are held in place in the blocks 5 by means of screws 10' extending through the slots 9. Similar blocks 11 are entered into the grooves of bloei; 6, while a center block 12 connects the inner ends ci blocks 10 and cut ends of blocks 1 0 are introducad,`
11. Blocks 10, 11 and 12 are connected to `each otherby means of pin and socket connection 15 as shown in Figures 3, i and 5.
To 'the center block 12 one end or' a block 18 is permanently fastened in any desired manner, as for instance by glue, the other end of which is detachably secured to block 10l by inea-ns of screws 1G. .ln a similar manner block 14 is permanently secured at one end to block 11 and at its opposite end by means ot screws 1G, detachably secured to block 12.
ln this manner the upper and lower :frame bars are formed.
The side bars ot the iframe are constructed in a similar manner by means of blocks 17, 18 and 19, and 2O which are connected at their inner meeting. ends by intermediary blocks 21 and 22 respectively, and these center pieces are held in place at the rear of the frame between blocks 18, 19 and 17, 2O by means of blocks 23, 241 constructed in a similar manner as blocks 13 and 1/1, and b'v means of screws 25. The ends of blocks 14 and 9A- abut the corner blocks 5 and 6 respectively. ingle pieces 26 are secured in any desired suitable manner, as for instance by means of glue, to the inner edges of the corner pieces in a manner shown in Figure 1. These angle pieces form a resting place for the edges of the picture placed int-o the frame and the glass covering the same.
lt will be clear, that by adding any number ot' intermediary blocks 12` and 21. '22 and the corresponding number ot blocks 13, 14- and 23, 2a at the rear of the frame, or by removing any number oi these blocks, the trame can be enlarged and reduced at will. The front face of the frame will at all times present a smooth surface which may be ornamented in any desired manner in order to give the trame a pleasing appearance.
The `glass plates are held in the frame 'troni the rca r in any well known manner, for
lVhat l claim as new and desire to secure` by Letters Patent of the United States isln a picture trarne of the class described, the combination of four corner pieces, each composed oi two grooved and slotted blocks -nently secured -to an outer block and the other end detaehably secured to `the intermediary block', eaeh pair of said intermediary blocks connected by a pin and slot conneetion, and angle piecesseeured to the inner-edges of the grooved and slotted blocks .to .forni a hold for the edges of a picture and' covering glass for the same in said frame, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my 20 signature.
ANTHON ZELAN.
