N'UFACTUBE OF THREADS, FILAMENTS, AND THE LIKE 0F GELLULOSE.
1570 Drawing To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that, I, Homer: J AMES HEGAN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Spring House, Redford Road, in the city of Coventry, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in or Connected with the Manufacture of Threads, Filaments, and the like of Cellulose, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the manufacture of threads, filaments, and the like, from viscose, in the preparation of which cotton has been used as the source of cellulose, including under the term cotton any suitable kind of cotton, such, for example, as long fibred cotton, or cottonwith short fibres such as is obtained from cotton-seed hulls.
In the production of threads, filaments, and the like, of cellulose, by projecting the said viscose through small orifices into a bath having an acid reaction, such, 'for instance, as a bath containing sulphuric acid and a sulphate with, or without, the addi tion of other suitable compound, or compounds, such, for instance, as glucose and a Zinc salt, there is generally a tendency, especially in the spinning of fine filaments, for one, or more, of the threads, filaments, or the like, to break,cand for globules of viscose, more, or less, coagulated, to form at the nozzle and pass up withthe thread onto the winding apparatus. This causes unevenness of the resulting thread, and such unevenness is generally not desirable.
According to the present invention the "tendency to break and form such globules is reduced by introducing into the viscose,
either as such, or during the preparation thereof, a substance, whlch lowers, or substances which lower, the surface tension of the viscose in comparison with the spinning bath employed, such substance, or substances, having either in itself, or themselves, or by reason of the small quantity used, practically no setting action on the viscose, and neither it, or they, nor its, or their, decomposition products having any injurious, or objectionable, efiect upon the 1 name to (31118 SPEClfiQ'zttlOIlflIl the presence of threads, filaments, or the like. 1

ner to any one, or more, of the ingredients employed in the ultimate preparation of the viscose, or of any of the intermediate products, although it is preferred to prepare the alkali cellulose in the absence of such substance, or substances.
I give the following as an example of how this invention may be performed, without restricting the invention. to this example. 'Iwo parts by weight of sodium oleate are introduced into the materials from which ten thousand parts by weight of viscose are prepared, the sodium oleate being preferably dissolved in the water, or dilute alkali employed for the solution of the cellulose xanthate. The viscose; after being prepared, and after having attained the desired ripeness, is passed through a nozzle containing orifices of the' desireddiameter, into a bath containing sulphuric ,acid, sodium sulphate, and glucose together with a small quantity of a zinc salt.
What I claim is 1. In the manufacture of threads, filaments, and'the like, from viscose prepared from cotton, the introduction into the setting bath of cotton-viscose containing a substance which will lower the surface tension of the viscose.
2. In the manufacture of threads, filaments, and the like, from viscose prepared from cotton, the introduction into the setting bath of cotton-viscose containing .so-.
the said sodiumv oleate being present in approximately the proportion of two parts by weight to-.ten thousand parts by weight of viscose;
In testimony whereof I have signed my two subscribing witnesses.
