TOURISTS TENT.
Application and March e, 1922. semi no. 542,392.
T @ZZ cil/wm t may concern.'
Be it known that JOHN M. InviN, a citi- Zen of the United States of Americaresid ing at Dalhart, in the county of Dallam and State of Texas, has invented new and useful Improvements in Tourists Tents, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention to provide a simple and convenient form of portable or tourists tent adapted to be folded into compact form for storage and shipment to thev end that it may readily be disposed as luggage on an automobile or similar' vehicle under conditions facilitating the erection thereof when required without the inconveniences incident to the pitchingr of a tent of the ordinary or conventional forms and which operation particularly in windy weather is one requiring more 'or less skill and experience; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tent frame constructed in accordance with the invention, the cover being indicated in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a view of the same in the folded condition.
Figure 8 is a detail view of the ridge pole in its folded condition.
Figures 4, 5 and 6 are detail views showing respectively the ridge pole mounting, one of the corner joints, and one of the sill joints.
The frame to which a cover of suitable flexible material is adapted to be permanently attached, and which is adapted when set up to be reinforced by suitable end guy ropes 10 secured to stakes 11 or the. equivalent thereof, consists essentiallj7 of end frames having the side bars l2 connected at their lower ends by the end sills 18, side sills 14, and a ridge pole 15. Corner braces 16 span the angles between the side bars of the end frames and the sills and are foldably mounted with relation to the side bars by being pivoted thereto as indicated at 17, and are detachably engaged at their extremities with the sills as by having notches 18 engaged with headed pins 19 or the equivalents thereof.
The side sills are of sectional construction and are jointed at intermediate points as indicated at 14, the joints being of the rule type disposed to permit of upward folding or buckling of the sills, and the end sills are similarly provided with joints 13a also adapted for upward buckling and being of the rule type, said sill joints being held in the operative position by the braces 16.
lThe side bars of the end frames are hingedly connected at 20 for transverse folding movement in a common plane so that they may be arranged in parallel relations with the end sill members folded between and inal common plane therewith while the ridge pole which is also of foldable construction with a rule joint 15a has a terminal hinge connection as indicated at 21 with the joint between the side bars of the end frames but also a swivel connection with said joints 20 to the end that the ridge pole may be turned or reversed in positionby axial movement. The combined hinge and swivel joint at each end of the ridge pole., in the construction illustrated, embodies a yoke 22, as shown more clearly in Figure 4,y to which the adjacent extremity of the pole is connected by a pivot 23, and said yoke carries a spindle 24 which forms the pivot pin of the joint 20 between the adjacent ends of the side bars 12 `of the end frame. Thus when the frame is extended the ridge pole may be turned so that the shoulders of the intermediate point 152L are disposed upwardly to resist downward breaking or buck ling of the ridge pole and obviously the cover 2'5 of the tent, which is indicated in dotted lines in the drawing, will serve to prevent upward buckling or breaking thereoil". In this position the ridge pole is adapt'- ed to efficiently support the cover which as indicated also in dotted lines may be provided with a suitable door flap 26. `When it is desired to fold the frame, the ridge pole may be turned 'to dispose the stop shoulders of the rule joint downwardly or inwardly so as to permit of theinward breaking or 100 folding of the ridge pole as the end frames are moved toward each other, it being ob# vious that such movement must also be accompanied by the upward breaking or buckling of the joints 14a arranged at intermedi- 105 ate points of the side sills.
By this arrangement it is possible to secure a rigid cover supporting structure when extended and set up for use while permitting of the folding thereof into compact. form with the cover attached when the device is not in use, to the end that it may be arranged in a small compass for ready transportation from one camping point to another.
Having described the invention, what is' vterminal swivel connection `with the end trames.
if. A tent having a toldablc cover stretcher consisting of end frames connected by side sills and a ridge pole of intermediately jointed folding construction, the ridge pole having av joint of the rule type and having a terminal swivel connection with the end frames, and detachable corner braces being arranged in spanning relation with the angles between the end frames and the side sills.
3. A tent having a foldable cover stretcher consisting of end frames connected by side sills and a ridge pole of intermediately ointed folding construction, the ridge pole having a joint of the rule type and having a terminal swivel connection with the end frames, the end frames including hingedly connected side members connected at their ifi/161296 lower ends by an intermediately jointed end sill.
4. A tent having a oldable cover stretcher consisting of end frames connected by side sills and a ridge pole of intermediately ointed folding construction, the ridge pole having a joint of the rule type and having a terminal swivel connection with the end frames, the end frames including hingedly connected side members connected at their lower ends by an intermediately ointed end sill, and corner braces being arranged in spanning relation with the angles between said side members and the side and end sills.
5. A tent having a foldable cover stretcher consisting of end frames connected by sido sills and a ridge pole oi intermediately jointed folding construction, the ridge pole having a joint of the rule type and having a terminal swivel connection with the end frames, the end frames including hinedly connected side members connected at their lower ends by an intermediately jointed end sill, and corner braces being arranged in spanning relation with the angles between said side members and the side and end sills, and being pivotally mounted upon one of said members for detachable engagement with the other.
In testimony whereof he aiiixes his signature.
JOHN M. IRVIN.
