Be it known that I, DONALD S.- Bannows,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft- Rigging Backstops; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to draft rigging backstops such as are secured between the center sills or draft sills of a railway car for the purpose of transmitting to the car underframe the buing shocks to which the draft rigging mech-anism is subjected in service.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a backstop constructed in a manner affording great strength without excessive weight, which may be reliably secured to the car sills with little labor and without diiiiculty, and in which the occurrence of shrinkage cracks and kindred manufacturing defects is minimized.
A further object of the invention is to provide a backstop construction well suited for use upon cars where the line of draft is low; and a still further object is to construct the backstop so that it may eliiciently serve as a bolster center filler for transmitting the load of the car to the center bearing, thus preventing buckling of the webs of the adjacent car sills.
Generally stated, the principal feature of the invention consists in forming a backstop with side walls which are adapted to be secured to'spaced car sills and are united at their forward ends to an end wall forming an abutment for a movable part of the draft rigging mechanism, a centrally disposed horizontally extending hollow column being united at its forward end to the said end wall and extending rearwardly therefrom, `and the said column being connected rearwardly of said end wall to the side walls by oppositely disposed longitudinally extending Webs and by a plurality of spaced transverse webs which themselves are united to the said oppositely disposed webs.

ging, and in supporting the said end wall. against bufiing shocks by means of a centrally disposedhollow column of oval cross section which is united at its forward end to said end wall. y
Another feature of the invention consists in providing a backstop with side walls adapted to be secured to spaced car sills and with al forward end wall united to said side walls and adapted tol form an abutment for a movable part of the draft rigging, a centrally disposed hollow column being united at its forward end to the end w-all and being connect-ed to the side walls by oppositely disposed horizontal webs, and a base plate being provided for the attachment vof a center bearing, the horizontal webs being connected to the base plate by a transversely extending web, and the side walls of the said column to the rear of said transverse web being extended downwardly and directly united to said base plate in spaced relation to said side walls.
Still another feature of the invention consists in providing a backstop with abase plate and a top plate spaced vertically therefrom, the said backstop being adapted to be secured to spaced car sills having inwardly projecting flanges, and the said base plate and top plate being formed on opposite sides of the longitudinalaxis of the backstop with faces 4adapted to engage and form seats for the opposed surfaces of the flanges of the car sills.
Other features of the invention, residing in particular details of construction and the relations of structural parts, will hereinafter appear.

The forward ends of the side walls 2 are integrally united by a transversely extending vertical end wall. 5 which is adapted to form an abutment for a movable part of the draft rigging, the portions of said. side walls which are immediately adjacent the said end wall 5 being preferably convergent forwardly. as indicated at 6.

A draft rigging backstop comprising side walls adapted to be secured to spaced car sills, a forward end wall united to said side walls and adapted to form an abutment for a movable part of the draft rigging, a hollow column of oval cross section united at its forward. end to said end wall and extending rearwardly therefrom, horizontal webs extending toward the axis of said column and uniting said side walls to said column, and transversely extending spaced vertical webs uniting said column, said side vwalls and said horizontal webs.

A- draft rigging backstop comprising side walls adapted to be secured to spaced car sills, a forward end wall united to said side walls and adapted to form an abutment for a movable part of the draft rigging, a centrally disposed hollow column united to and extending rearwardly from said end wall, and a base plate having a king-bolt opening therein, said column at its rear end being open on its under side and being pro-y vided with longitudinally extending side walls which are united to said base plate.
A draft rigging backstop comprising side walls adapted to be secured to spaced car sills, a forward end wall united to said side walls and adapted to form an abutment for a movable part of the draft rigging, a horizontally disposed hollow column united to and extending rearwardly from said end wall, a base plate to which the rear end of said column is united, a top plate spaced vertically from said base plate, and a vertically extending hollow column uniting sa'fl base plate and said top plate and adapted to receive a lingbolt, said columns being directly` united integrally and having their interiors in open communication.

A draft rigging backstop comprising side walls adapted to be secured to spaced car sills having inwardly projecting flanges, a forward end wall united to said side walls and adapted to form an abutment for a movable part of the draft rigging, means extending between and connecting said side walls intermediate their upper and lower edges, a base plate integrally united to said side walls, a top plate spaced vertically from said base plate, and means extending between and integrally uniting said base plate and said top plate, said base plate and said top plate being formed on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis of said backstop with faces adapted to engage the flanges of sad car sills.
7. A draft rigging backstop comprising side walls adapted to be secured to spaced car sills having inwardly projecting flanges,
a forward end wall united to said side walls and adapted to form an abutment for a movable part of the draft rigging, a base plate located rearwardly of said end wall and integrally united to said side walls, and a top plate. spaced vertically from said base plate and integrally united to said side walls, said base plate and said top plate being provided on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis of the backstop with faces adapted to engage the flanges of said car sills.

A draft rigging backstop comprising side walls adapted to be secured to spaced car sills, a forward end wall united to said side walls and adapted to form an abutment for a movable part of the draft rigging,y a centrally disposed hollow column united at its forward end to said end wall and extend- 4for a movable part of the draft rigging, and
a hollow column of oval cross section united at its forward end to said end wall, and extending rearwardly therefrom between said side walls, the major axis of said oval being vertical.
