the horizontal bends 22 of said angle bars being adapted in operative position to ex tend inwardly and bear with their inner edges against the front lower part of the character frames.
The lateral border compartments may be closed by vertical swinging doors 23 hinged at 23' 0r otherwise pivotally joined to the frame 10 to swing horizontally.
Instead of fixing the doors 20 and 23 to the frame 10, the same may be made detachable, as for instance, through the medium ofbayonet locking means 24, shown in Fig. 9, in order to enable the changing of the doors when different patterns are desired. t i In the border compartments are provided means for the attachment of lighting fixtures, such as electric bulbs 25. To allow the exchange of the colored plates there may be secured to the inner face of each door below and above each opening 26 a grooved cross piece 28 to removably support said colored plate '27.
Likewise inside of each character compartment behind the channelled parts receiving the character plate 18, suitable fixtures such as sockets 29 for electric bulbs or other lighting means are provided.
The character frames 18 are hollow and rectangular in shape and have their rear walls 18, somewhat laterally displaced .relative to their front walls 18 as shown in Fig. 7, so that when assembled in any one of the character compartments contiguous characters will laterally overlapone another These character frames have openings 18 stamped or cut out in the front and rear walls conform ing with the contour of a character and accommodate bet-ween said walls colored plates 18*, which are adapted'to be inserted into the same from the side through a slot 1S substantially as described in my separate application of even filing date. For locking the swinging doors 20 and 23 and swinging angle bars or ledges 22 in closed position, fingers 30 suitably pivoted to theframe are provided.

A sign frame of: the character (ins scribed, divided by partitions into character display compartments and lighting border compartments, swinging doors for' said border compartments, the partitions forming the horizontal border compartments jhaving bent portions to serve as rear abutments for the. characters contained in the adjacent character compartments, and means for holding said characters in position.
2. The combination with individual removable characters, of a sign frame divided by partitions into character display com-- partments, each of said partitions being stepped so as to form a rear portion to serve as a support for a lamp fixture, a shoulder to serve as a rear abutment for said characters and; a base to support said characters and means for holding said characters in position thereon.

4. A sign frame of the character described, divided by partitions into char acter display compartments and lighting border compartments, swinging doors for said border compartments, the partitions forming the compartments, having bent portions to serve as rear abutments for the characters contained in the adjacent character compartments the upper horizontal swinging door having a bend to serve as a frontabutment for the characters in the upper display compartments, swinging angular ledges to act as front abutmcnts for the characters in the other display compartments, and tiltable members for fixing said ledges in operative position.
5. In a box shaped sign frame having tiers of removable characters and a hollow border around all sides of said frame to form lighting compartments, a removable swinging door for each of said compartments having openings, means for attaching lighting fixtures in said border compartments, and means for rcmovably supporting light modifying plates behind said openings, the upper horizontal swinging door being formed at its free end with a bend to serve as an abutment for the adjacent tier of characters.
6. In a box shaped frame having tiers of removable characters and a hollow border around all sides of said frame to form lighting compartments, a removable swinging door for each of said compartments having openings, means for attaching lighting fix tures in said border compartments and c-rrooved members on. the inner face of said doors for removably supporting light modifying plates covering said openings, the upper horizontal swinging door being. formed at its free end with a bend to serve as an abutment for the adjacent tier of characters.
7.
