Description

`application led July 9,
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that 1, lPnncY W. WrswnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Westwood, in the county of Norfolk and A a State of Massachusetts, have invented cer tain new and useful VImprovements 1n Razor-Blade Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference; being had tothe accompanying drawings. 1o rl"his invention relates to holders and particularly to razor blade holders.
llt is an' 'object of the 'invention to provide a device of` this character capable of holdingthe blade rigidly while the same is being stropped or honed.
It is another object to provide a device of this character comprising two parts, each part being formed from a single piece of material.`
lt is another object to provide l a 'device of this character' wherein the handle portionl of the vdevice has one end formed into a clamp adapted to receive a pair of jaw members between which a razor b lade is disposed. Another object Vide a holder of this character including a -pair'of jaw members formed from a single piece of material, said ljaw members beingA pivoted within one end portion of the handle for movement inwardly and outwardly of said end portion, said jaw members being .normally urged away from`each other, to permit rotation of. the bladebetween the jaw members to position each edge of the blade for sharpening without removing the blade from the holder. a With these and other objects in View the Iinvention consists, in the improved construction and arrangement of parts to. be hereinafter more particularly described, fully claimed and illustrated in the accomp anyingdrawings, .in whichz- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a razor blade holder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the invention, and showing the razor blade in position.
Figure 2 is an end elevation, l Figure 3 is a top plan and sectional view of the blade holding means, and
Figures: is a plan View of the holder with the holding means removed. Referring to the drawings, 5 designates a handle member formed from a sheet of material, portions of its longitudinal edges being extended toward and into enga-gement -pable .of firmly engaging any means ofthe invention is to proieai. serial no. atenas.
with each other to form a handle portion 6,"the end of the handle .portion being slit at several points so as to provide. a rounded end T by extending the portions between the slits inwardly toward each other. rlhe handle port-ion 6 is knurled so as to permit the operator to obtain a firm hold. A
A'll`he end portion 8 of the sheet has its longitudinal edges 9 curved back toward each other and then outwardly in spaced parallel relation to each other to provide a clamp, the inner end portions of the edges 9, `that is where the clamp portion joins with each other, while 'struck from each of the edges 9 adjacent the handle. portion 6 is a trunnion 10, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. rlPhe sheet of material from which the Ahandle member is formed is resilient, so that theclamp is cadisposed between the parallel portion of the edges 9 the curved or circular portion of the clamp causing the edges 9 to bind on the means.-
In connection with the clamp of the de- `vice, novel holding means is employed, said means conslstlng of a length of resilient ma- Y.
terial the central portion of its longitudinal edges being cut ll-shaped as at 12al and 12b. 'The length of material is then folded lat the center of the ll-shaped cuts to provide jaws 11 and 12 and an inwardly canted end portion 12c at the bight portion of the jaws. In this way the holding member may be swung outwardly and disposed at right angles to the clamping jaws. The holding member ,is thereby positioned ina manner to permit the ready insertion of the blade from either side of the holder without danger of the blade coming in contact with either the handle-member or the clamping jaws, and without danger of the holding member accidentally moving toward the han y10 `dle. An opening 13 is provided adjacentv of the opposite jaw.
being adapted to register. After the formation of the above mentioned lugs and openings, the strip is bent at'its intermediate portion so as to bring the jaws in spaced parallel relation to each other and permit the lug of each 'jaw to extend through the opening The jaw members are then disposed within the lclamp so as to permit the trunnions l() to extend into the recesses 17. The jaw 1l is also provided with an extension 18 which projects beyond the end of the clamp. The purpose of this is to permit the jaws to be swung inwardly or outwardly of the clamp in order to apply the razor blades. This holder is capable of efficiently holding any razor blade having a longitudinal slot or a plurality of openings in its intermediate portion.
In the use of the device, the aw members are swung outwardly of the clamp so as to permit the same to move laterally away from each other.- The razor blade is then inserted between the jaws, the lugs of the jaws eX tending through the adjacent openings ot' the blade. The jaw members are then moved toward each other and swung inwardly of the clamp, the resiliency ot' the clamp' causing the jaws to bind on`the blade to prevent movement of the blade in any direction Arelative to the holder, The blade is then ready for stroppingor honing, and in view of the novel way it is clamped within the holder, there is no danger of the blade slipping or becoming accidentally disengaged. When one .edge of the blade has been treated, the jaw members m'ay be swung outwardly of the clamp so as to permit the blade to be rotated on the innermost lug let and bring the opposite edge of the blade into position for treatment. The. jaw members are then swung inwardly of the clamp and the last mentioned edge of the blade is then ready for stropping or honing.
From the foregoing it will bereadily seen that this invention provides a novel form of razor blade holder which does not use rivets, Screws, or like separate fastening means, but-wherein all parts of the device are formed from two pieces of resilient material. ln addition to this, the jaw members are'not the only means provided tor holding the blade, the clamp formed on the handle portion also assisting to bind the jaws on the blade.
members so that movement ot the jaw members with respect to the holder is pre vented.
lVhat is claimed is:-
A razor blade holder comprising an elongated sheet ol material curved laterally, the side edges of the sheet at the central and onel end portion ot the curved sheet being disposed in engagement with each other to provide a handle, the side edges at the oppo' site end Iportion of the sheet beingr extended outwardly in spaced relation to each other and in angular relation to the curved porY tion of the sheet to provide clamping jaws',
a'holding member consisting otl a strip ot ref silient material bent at its central portion to provide a pair otl arms, said holding` meinber being pivoted at its bight portion to one end portion of and between the (,-lampingr jaws, that portion of the outer longitudinal edges of the arms adjacent the bight portion ot' the holding member being canted inwardly toward the pivot of the holding member to permit movement ot' the holding member to a` position at right angles to the handle, one ot said arms having an elongated lug disposed laterally at the central portion ot said arm and adapted to enter a relatively large opening provided in the opposite arm, said opposite arm having an elongated lug` extending longitudinally ofthe arm adjacent'the outer end portiony of the arm and adapted to enter a relatively larg'e opening provided in the first mentioned arm. said arms being normally -sprung away trom each other to permit movement ot' the central lug a slight distance from its opening, and movement of the end lug` a fonsiderable distance trom its opening, upon movement of the holding member outwardly of the clamping jaws.
ln testimony whereof l hereiinto afiix my signature.
